Historia
A serial murderer known only by a grotesquely apt nickname—Buffalo Bill—is stalking women. He has a purpose, but no one can fathom it, for the bodies are discovered in different states. Clarice Starling, a young trainee at the FBI Academy, is surprised to be summoned by Jack Crawford, chief of the Bureau's Behavioral Science section. Her assignment: to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter—Hannibal the Cannibal—who is kept under close watch in the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane.

Simply Amazing
Revisado: 09-24-24
One of the best books I've ever read/heard. I've been a fan of the movies for years and finally got around to listening to the books. Red Dragon was excellent, and this one was even better. Clarice, Hannibal, and Buffalo Bill/Mr. Hyde are all incredibly and distinctly well written. The scenes are visceral, intriguing, and haunting. The book shows you everything the movie had to streamline and rush to fit into a comfortable runtime, but the movie doesn't sacrifice or compromise any of the story, save for fleshing out Jack Crawford a little more. If you're a fan of the movie, you'll definitely enjoy the book.

Vivid character psychology
Revisado: 09-17-24
The characters are so well-written, and their thoughts and actions told so clearly. I've always loved the stories, having seen the movies many times, but the book gives you so much more of what the characters are thinking as well as fleshing out Dollarhyde's backstory. Highly recommend.

Historia
Boisterous, ribald, and ultimately shattering, Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest has left an indelible mark on the literature of our time. Turning conventional notions of sanity and insanity on their heads, the novel tells the unforgettable story of a mental ward and its inhabitants, especially tyrannical Big Nurse Ratched and Randle Patrick McMurphy, the brawling, fun-loving new inmate who resolves to oppose her.

Perfect
Revisado: 08-20-24
Amazing story with gripping, well-written characters. The way the writer tells the story from Chief's sometimes unreliable perspective is fascinating. We not only see what's actually happening, but what Chief "believes" is happenin from a mentally unstable perspective on reality. Expertly performed by John C. Riley.

“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

Gripping stories
Revisado: 06-24-24
Every story in this collection holds your attention. There's a running theme of death and specifically post-mortem treatment, desecration and such that I found interesting. Perhaps what's weighing on King's mind in his later years as he spends more time in Florida, where several of these stories are set. The narrator gives a stellar performance throughout, and Stephen King even does a great job taking over for a couple of the stories. Highly recommend.

Mal wins an old map in a card game. Ancient and written in impenetrable symbols, the former owner insists it's worthless. Yet River Tam can read it, and says it leads to one of the Arks - legendary ships that brought humans from Earth-that-was to the 'Verse. The salvage potential alone is staggering. But the closer they get to the ancient ship, the more agitated River becomes.

A great entry in the series
Revisado: 02-13-23
This book corrects the course of the novels that dipped in the 3rd book. My only complaint is the unclear order now, starting this book with Inara and Book on board after they had already left in book 3. Then they don't factor into the story at all, so what was the point of even including them? This book could have just been set chronologically after book 3. The story is great and interesting, though it does start to ramble in the 3rd act, particularly when the book is in the point of view of Sylas or the blue gloves, but it isn't enough to really detract from a good story. The narrator continues his, now expected, excellent work. Will definitely continue with book 5.

A good, if inconsequential entry
Revisado: 02-08-23
It's another well written book, authentic to the setting and characters. But the story is ultimately detached from any overall or continuing arc. It feels like the equivalent of a filler episode of the show. The book is basically broken into several subplots, each within different crew members minds. Some of these subplots feel authentic and believable, while others feel downright ludicrous. This is excusable though through the literary device of these stories coming from the subconscious hopes and fears of each character. Overall, it's a step down from the first 2 books, but still worth a listen for the unique premise and glimpses into the psyche of each character. one glaring plot hole I can't ignore though, is that River knows how to fly Serenity. Her brain is an encyclopedia of knowledge and skills, yet the story is very dependent on her not being able to do that. The narrator continues his great work, and I look forward to the next book.

strong start, odd ending
Revisado: 01-30-23
This book starts quite strong with authentic, unique characters and and a gripping, intense plot. McCarthy's prose/run-on style sets a rustic tone that tells this story well. The narrator also gives a phenomenal performance, fitting the tone well and making each character feel distinct. The story, however, derails in the 3rd act, where the author intentionally skips over what would be the climax of the central story arc, and instead summarizes events through the perspective of secondary characters who never even directly encounter the protagonist or antagonist in the story. It's an odd choice that makes an otherwise strong novel feel quite disappointing, leaving you with heavy handed lamenting about the direction the world is headed in, rather than any sort of resolution to the story that was being told for two thirds of the book. perhaps that was the author's intention, to leave the reader disappointed in the story the way the characters in it are disappointed in the outcome of the events. If so, he succeeded.

Captain Mal Reynolds is in a fix. He’d like nothing more than to find honest smuggling work that stays under the Alliance’s radar and keeps the good ship Serenity in the sky. But when an old flame of Jayne Cobb’s sends a desperate plea across the galaxy, his crew has other ideas. On the arid, far-flung world of Thetis, the terrifying Elias Vandal is threatening to overrun the town of Coogan’s Bluff with his trigger-happy army. He wants control of the only thing standing between its people and dustbowl ruin: their water supply.

Another great addition
Revisado: 01-18-23
This story is just as good and faithful to the source material as the first book. It has a slightly darker and more graphic tone than the show and the first book, which feels jarring at first. But I realized it's beginning to transition from the tone of the show to the tone of the movie, and in that regard, it works really well. The story feels like a mashup of the Heart of Gold and Jaynestown episodes and even references them specifically in the book. It does the same for Jayne's backstory as the first book did for Mal's. So if Jayne isn't your favorite character, you may not enjoy this one as much as the first, as Jayne takes the lead role here, and the rest of the crew is more secondary in this story Strongly recommend, and I'll definitely be continuing the series.

The Battle of Serenity Valley was the turning point that led the Independents to their defeat at the hands of the Alliance. Yet the Browncoats had held the valley for weeks against all odds, before being ordered to lay down their arms. Command stated they refused to send in airpower because the ground war was "too hot". But the soldiers who were there insist that was not true.... While picking up a new cargo on Persephone, Captain Malcolm Reynolds is kidnapped by a bunch of embittered veteran Browncoats who suspect him of sabotaging the Independents during the war.

Just like watching the show again
Revisado: 01-11-23
The author clearly loves and appreciates the characters and universe the show created. The writing stays true to each of them and feels just like watching the show, peppering in loads of callbacks to the episodes, while also telling a new and original story. The narrator is great, and while not outright voice-acting each character, does add different inflections to each to make them feel true to their real life counterparts. This is a wonderful listen for any fan of the show and adds some great background to Mal and some of Book's backstory. I'm looking forward to the whole series now, to bridge the gap between Firefly and Serenity.
