Historia
Strongest advocate, best friend, expert, cheerleader and chief photographer. Before, during and after labour the role of a midwife is second to none. The Secret Midwife reveals the highs and lows on the frontline of the maternity unit, from the mother that tries to give herself a DIY caesarean to the baby born into witness protection, and from surprise infants that arrive down toilets to ones that turn up in the lift.

An exceptional true story everyone should read
Revisado: 08-15-22
I usually don't take the time to write a review but I'm taking the time because I'm really ticked off by some of the negative reviews:
1. This is a true story, this is no "plot" but somebody's life, and saying it is contrived or a "bad plot," is just insulting for such a heartfelt, honest, balanced, and empathetic story.
2. Yes, the writer uses profanity on occasion, but only when narrating dialog where profanity was used under such stressful conditions that it is surprising there was not more of it. It is not gratuitous in any way, but very real. I object to profanity in most cases, but here it was necessary for a storyline and there is very little of it, so giving it a bad review based strictly on this is unfair.
3. The title is "The Secret Midwife" because she obviously needs to conceal her identity for fear of retribution by her employer, and if you could not figure it out you did not read the story closely enough to leave a review.
This woman's story is beautiful and stomach-turning, inspiring and gut-wrenching. It holds nothing back and if you get queasy easily you will need to skip some sections. I had to do that in one particular instance, but bringing children into this world is not for the faint of heart. I could not believe how many things this midwife decides to brush off because she wants to do her best for her patients and how much understanding she extends to people whose sole job appears to be to make everyone else's life and job miserable.
The story is set in the UK, but the lessons apply to the US and also many EU health systems. They are broken and then systematically break the will of those working the hardest for their patients, the nurses and midwives, and either make them quit, or turn cold and rude to protect themselves or as it is increasingly the case to kill themselves. Our healthcare system is making people ill both physically and mentally and the organizations are treating the problem by throwing more administrators at it, instead of taking care of the medical staff before they have none left. Will the administrators help deliver babies once all the midwives are forced out? And the nurses, medical techs, and health aids? It is depressing because the future looks grim.

From our offices and homes to schools, hospitals, and restaurants, the indoor spaces where we work, learn, play, eat, and heal have an outsized impact on our performance and well-being. They affect our creativity, focus, and problem-solving ability and can make us sick - jeopardizing our future and dragging down profits in the process. Joseph Allen and John Macomber make a compelling case in this urgently needed book for why every business and home owner should make certain relatively low-cost investments a top priority.

Read this if you work in building industry
Revisado: 06-07-21
Every architect, facility manager, and building owner should read this, it is crazy that it took a pandemic to start the discussion about indoor air. Dr. Joe Allen has ben researching the topic for years and presents it in an approachable manner. What we breathe is more important than what we eat or drink, as we consume four times the amount of it.

Lenore Skenazy called down a firestorm of controversy when she wrote a newspaper column about letting her nine-year-old ride alone on the New York City subway. In this plainspoken take on modern parenting, Skenazy offers a commonsense approach to letting kids be kids.
