Very Enlightening
Revisado: 09-24-24
I really enjoyed this book. I learned a lot about NHS doctors in the UK. One thing that really surprised me is the incredible low pay these guys get. That's really depressing and yet I like the fact that they aren't in it for the money. One thing that became extremely clear to me however is why my Aussie customers call the Brits "The Whingeing Poms" they truly are a whiny bunch. I do take into consideration the style that this book was written in, and I enjoyed the satirical humor, but there is no doubt in my mind now that the Brits indeed are a whiny bunch lol.

Interesting story. Terrible narrator
Revisado: 09-04-24
I've listened to Pappy Boyingtons book and I really enjoyed it. This was a great story also, and would've been a 5 star if it would've had a good narrator. The narrator has a complete and total disregard for punctuation and delivers the story in the same tone of voice with terrible inflection. Lots of times the reader doesn't know when a different character is talking as the tone never changes.

I like Ken Follett, but some of his work can become long and tedious. Not so with this novel. It has it all, intrigue, suspense, mystery, and fast paced with lots of danger. Amazing book

I'm a huge Dean Koontz fan, but this book just doesn't have it. I wouldn't waste a credit. Instead read his Odd Thomas books. Those are great

In "Stakeout" Steve and his partner mistake a Manhattan dentist for an armed robbery suspect and reduce the man down to a puddle of snot and tears when questioning him. In "Mug Shot" the mother of a suspected criminal makes a strange request and provides a sobering reminder of the humanity at stake in his profession.

The cop stories were real great, however I bought the book for exactly that. the author got off topic pretty bad several times so that's the reason for 3 stars

Interesting story, but OH MY WORD!.....the cynicis
Revisado: 09-30-21
I am a huge fan of first responder books so this one was interesting. I am taking off two stars for the cynicism this paramedic shows towards the UK public in general. I wish she could have just told her story and experiences without that. The reader would have been left with a fascinating insight into the life and work of prehospital care. Instead we are given a picture of the darkest side of humanity throughout the book. It seems like she simply cannot refrain from exploring each person's behavioral failures......even the bystanders. Particularly the women who was left laying on the ground all day long in a busy shopping center. Despite the recent trouble, that would have never happened in America. I will say that she did show alot of compassion towards this lady and I do believe that Lisa is a very compassionate and caring medic. The book just could have been so much better

Historia
Known as one of America's most dangerous cities, New Orleans plays host to incidents ranging from the tragic and disturbing to the completely bizarre - and during his career as an emergency medic, Jon McCarthy saw it all. He chronicles some of the most formative calls of his career in this autobiography that sounds like crime fiction. McCarthy demonstrates with detail and clarity that the difficult choice is often the right choice. While not for the faint of heart, each entry in this collection provides poignant insight into the bonds between medics and the people and city they serve.

Could've been so much better
Revisado: 09-15-21
I'm not gonna say I didn't like it which is why I gave it three stars, but honestly I've listened to alot of First responder books and I own the whole Nightwatch show about New Orleans EMS. This book is anticlimactic. It only covers a few calls and far too much detail is outlined in each call. The guy that wrote this book sounds like a great medic, but he simply needed help writing this book. With all his years of experience there could've been a much richer experience to be had by the reader. I didn't count them, but I'm guessing he only went over approximately 10 calls in this book, and the ones he went over were just explained too lengthy. This is EMS! He is a Paramedic! This should've been fast paced and riveting, but instead meh....like I said... anticlimactic. It may have been due to the narrator also, very slow delivery and mispronounced New Orleans the whole time. Still with all that being said I guess I enjoyed it......kinda. I am fascinated by The Big Easy so maybe that's why it was ok.

An army of monsters walks among us, hidden in plain sight. They're fast. They're strong. They're unrelenting. And they only want one thing: The shitty gas station at the edge of town. Coming as a surprise to absolutely no one, Jack - night-shift clerk and local crazy person - has found himself neck-deep in the middle of yet another world-ending terror. And this time around, nobody can be trusted. Not that tough-as-nails cop who probably knows a lot more than she's letting on. Not the adorkable new employee who might be something far less innocent than she appears.
