Historia
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.

Phoebe’s Story is too Predictable
Revisado: 03-16-25
The Wedding People had scattered worthy moments. In the end, it was very predictable. I did not care for the narrator: she was insistent upon using the hardest K sounds in the world. It got to the point where it was distracting. Phoebe, our protagonist was always described by her full name. It reminded me of the Will Ferrell movie where he hears his narrator. It was weird. Again, a distracting choice. I’m not sure it would be as distracting were I reading it in print. Those were audiobook issues.
As far as the story goes, it begins with a quirky opening and kind of meanders through Phoebe’s story. Mostly it was quite predictable. The end was quite predictable. The vast majority of side characters were extremely unlikable— unnecessarily so. It seems she wrote Phoebe and Gary, and then had no idea how to write the characters that surrounded. I would not recommend this book. For all the time that I spent listening, it was definitely not worth it. There are other, smarter life/love stories out there.

Enjoying this a lot—Orphan X is fun
Revisado: 11-12-24
Great fun character—like Gray Man and Jack Reacher. Great reader, too. Always important—so many good stories have been wrecked by a bad narrator.

Historia
Beverly Underwood and her arch enemy, Lula Dean, live in the tiny town of Troy, Georgia, where they were born and raised. Now Beverly is on the school board, and Lula has become a local celebrity by embarking on mission to rid the public libraries of all inappropriate books—none of which she’s actually read. To replace the “pornographic” books she’s challenged at the local public library, Lula starts her own lending library in front of her home: a cute wooden hutch with glass doors and neat rows of the worthy literature that she’s sure the town’s readers need.

Good story until the end
Revisado: 07-23-24
I really enjoyed this story. Unfortunately what could’ve been a nice ending seem to turn overly political and unnecessarily so. Yeah, it’s 2024, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see what the author is saying. having drag queens save the day was kind of annoying. And I’m not even remotely conservative. It just bummed me out. I don’t want to read my books and get the nightly news and Twitter and YouTube and all that in my book. I’m reading a book to escape. Yuck.

Meh. I just didn’t care about any of them.
Revisado: 01-26-24
It’s surprising to me that I didn’t care about characters in a John Grisham novel. He is usually really good at getting me hooked right away. This book, put down pretty quickly. I came back to it only because another book that I had started was annoying, and I needed to try something else. I figured, hey, I bought this I’m going to tough it out. By the end, I was just: come on and get this over with. It was so earnest and fake. It felt like I was watching someone’s fake Facebook life. Yuck. If you have liked Grisham books in the past then don’t bother with this one.

The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

Grew up with Penny on TV...
Revisado: 04-26-15
She is hilarious and brash and everything I'd hoped. This book was so much better, read by her. (I wish I could type with her fab Bronx accent!) the stories of movies she directed (all of which I'd loved) and of Laverne & Shirley were a treat. She told it like it was--warts and all. Who knew after reading this, she'd seem like a statesman. A hilarious statesman.

Bev Tunney and Amy Schein have been best friends for years; now, at 30, they're at a crossroads. Bev is a Midwestern striver still mourning a years-old romantic catastrophe. Amy is an East Coast princess whose luck and charm have too long allowed her to cruise through life. Bev is stuck in circumstances that would have barely passed for bohemian in her mid-20s. I've not even finished because I could not bear the reader. This seems like it's a great story--I'll probably go buy the actual book. This narrator is my least favorite ever in my years of Audible membership. So disappointing...

Historia
At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

Now I want to HIKE!!!
Revisado: 05-07-13
Where does Wild rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
One of my favorites. I was not sure a memoir about a hike (something I have never done) would keep my attention, but I ended up completely enrapt. The book was inspirational, surprising, and challenging at times. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
What other book might you compare Wild to and why?
I do not read a lot of memoirs.
Which character – as performed by Bernadette Dunne – was your favorite?
Cheryl, of course.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
From lost to found...
Any additional comments?
Brava.

Please use a pronunciation guide!!
Revisado: 08-23-06
The book itself is really interesting, and just as juicy as I expected. I have been a Barbra fan since I was a young girl--and to hear about her amazing success (at such a young age, too!) is incredible. I take issue with the narration. Ellen Archer has a pleasant reading voice, but there are so many glaring errors in pronunciation of the names of very famous movie stars, with a bonus of different wrong pronunciations of the same name, that I think it detracts mightily from the listening experience. "Ellen Burstyn" becomes "Ellen Bernstein" twice. "Vivian Leigh" is "Vivian Lay" and "Leigh Taylor Young" vascillates between "Lay Taylor Young" and "Lee Taylor Young." She even has problems with actual words, like "vestige" and "bicuspids." I do not know if it was a rush job, but come on. It is annoying.

Historia
GARLIC AND SAPPHIRES is Ruth Reichl's riotous account of the many disguises she employs to dine anonymously. There is her stint as Molly Hollis, a frumpy blond with manicured nails and an off-beige Armani suit that Ruth takes on when reviewing Le Cirque. The result: her famous double review of the restaurant: first she ate there as Molly; and then as she was coddled and pampered on her visit there as Ruth, New York Times food critic.

Fantastic!!
Revisado: 08-26-05
This book is so enjoyable--I love that she included the eating experience and then the review. To hear her describe all she went through in the visits to the restaurants and how those combined to become the actual review is wonderful. Her descriptions of dishes are mouth-watering to say the least. They make you want to move to New York and go to all the restaurants. I have to give her only four stars, in keeping with Ms. Reichl's reviews. :) What a delightful diversion!!
