Historia
Felicia “Fe Fe” Stevens is living with her vigilantly loving mother and older teenaged brother, whom she adores, in building 4950 of Chicago’s Robert Taylor Homes. It’s the summer of 1999, and her high-rise is next in line to be torn down by the Chicago Housing Authority. She, with the devout Precious Brown and Stacia Buchanan, daughter of a Gangster Disciple Queen-Pin, form a tentative trio and, for a brief moment, carve out for themselves a simple life of Double Dutch and innocence.

A landmark book!
Revisado: 10-21-22
It was unintentional, but yet interesting that I listened to Just Mercy and Last Summer on State Street back to back. My comment about Just Mercy is that some books come along and give you a view of the world that makes you realize you have privilege and that you should do something about those who don’t.
I live in Wisconsin, so driving through the south side of Chicago was only something we did on the way to vacation. I do remember seeing the Robert Taylor Homes as they were being torn down. My last memory is when there were three left.
I read about the drug use, gangs, violence and murders. Never did I stop to think of the good memories people shared there. Children were born and loved. Some other grew old and died there and were also loved. Teachers brought their A game to work trying to give the children they taught options. Yet Last Summer on State Street tells me that the promise of a better life after RTH was scary as forever friendships and families would be separated.
This book, like Just Mercy, made me stop and think about people who grew up with different experiences than me all while living approximately 150 miles from me.
It’s happy to know that Fe Fe made it through, yet the memories she shared include that many others didn’t.

Impressive!
Revisado: 06-09-22
Great narrator, which makes it breaks any audiobook.
As far as the story goes, there was A LOT of pieces that needed to fit together to make this a satisfying conclusion. The author did an excellent job weaving it all together and backtracked just often enough that I didn’t lose track of all the pieces.

Different twist on a WWII story
Revisado: 06-04-22
I wasn’t sure that I’d like this book…just didn’t know if I was in the mood for another book set in Europe during WWII. Turns out the Nazis were actually not often in the storyline and the story was more about three women who became friends and found men to fall in love with. It was a decent read.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Sci fi for the non-sci fi reader
Revisado: 05-01-22
I’m not a usual consumer of sci fi. I like to suspend reality a bit, but not too much. I wanted to read The Martian by Andy Weir before I saw the movie. I read it awhile back and I really enjoyed it…the vast numbers of f-bombs was slightly off putting, but the story was also really good. Project Hail Mary got caught by the algorithm and kept getting recommended to me. I dismissed it for a long time and it ended up as a book that was recommended by a friend…I guess that’s just a human algorithm, isn’t it?
I finally decided to read (well, listen to it) it AND I COULDN’t PUT IT DOWN!! What a great story with an awesome narrator! No f-bombs from the middle school science teacher in this book! I found it quite funny as Grace is waking up and his best exclamations are very g-rated and he has a conversation with himself about his word choices. I had to talk to my math loving friend about some of the comments Grace makes as he’s loving doing math.
Weir’s books have a lot of human story line that just happens to take place in space which I think can give them appeal to readers of multiple genres.

Historia
An intricate tale of love, haunting memories, and renewal, Second Glance begins in current-day Vermont, where an old man puts a piece of land up for sale and unintentionally raises protest from the local Abenaki Indian tribe, who insist it's a burial ground. When odd, supernatural events plague the town of Comtosook, a ghost hunter is hired by the developer to help convince the residents that there's nothing spiritual about the property.

Difficult as audiobook
Revisado: 03-20-22
There were a lot of characters in this book. I found it difficult to keep them all straight, especially as an audiobook. It may have been easier to follow the characters if there were multiple narrators.
The story was definitely unusual and the many twists and turns made it difficult to follow.

This book grabbed me and wouldn’t let go! It’s NOT for the faint of heart, though as there are many graphically brutal scenes.

Historia
Mark Rivers was a firefighter until he got trapped in a wildfire and suffered third-degree burns on his face and body. After a year of recovering, Mark is trying to piece his life back together but struggles both emotionally and psychologically. He's been a recluse until he forces himself to attend his niece's school play and sees Riley, the school's art teacher. Immediately, Mark feels a connection to her. Maybe it's the kind way she greets his niece or the way the art she created for the school play is reminiscent of his late mom's artwork.

Long in the middle
Revisado: 02-09-22
While I liked this story, I also felt like it got long in the middle which is why I’m only giving it 3 stars. It was like the author was telling one story and brought it to a climax and then decided to tell another story with another climax instead of concluding the first one. I probably won’t seek out another book by this author for this reason either.
