Historia
For his whole life, the boy has lived underground, in a basement with his parents, grandmother, sister, and brother. Before he was born, his family was disfigured by a fire. His sister wears a white mask to cover her burns. He spends his hours with his cactus, reading his book on insects, or touching the one ray of sunlight that filters in through a crack in the ceiling. Ever since his sister had a baby, everyone's been acting very strangely.

Incredibly boring with a horrible storyline!
Revisado: 10-20-16
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Maybe having the family get help despite the physical damage from the fire.
What do you think your next listen will be?
not sure
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
He seemed to have a monotone voice.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Light of the Fireflies?
I didn't care for the book at all so Im not sure what would have made it better other then starting over from the beginning with a more positive storyline.
Any additional comments?
There isn't a book written about incest that I would find entertaining and worth my time and money. I purchased this book because the title sounded intriguing. From the minute I started listening I found it boring and struggled to continue listening. Once the main characters (who was a young boy) sister started telling him that their father was raping her I quit listening. Whats upsetting to me is that there is nothing in the description of the book that says its about incest and Audible refuses to refund my money. I feel that if a book is about certain subjects it should be disclosed so the reader (or listener) can make the decision whether they want to purchase the book. In this case my guess is thats the only way this book would sell.

Predictable but heartwarming
Revisado: 08-21-16
What did you love best about Chasing River?
I enjoyed knowing that River was willing to be a better man for his family and Amber. That although he only knew Amber for a short time he realized she was worth changing for.
What did you like best about this story?
I enjoyed hearing the love and devotion River had towards his off track brother until it affected his family and Amber. Knowing his brother, Aengus was fighting a battle that would never be won was tearing their family apart, River knew it was time for change, knowing the results of his change would send his brother back to prison he did what was right. That River was willing to do whatever it took to win Amber's heart.
Which character – as performed by Elizabeth Louise and Steve West – was your favorite?
I think both Amber and River were well done.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
In the beginning when River was willing to risk his life for someone he didn't know. Throwing himself on Amber to save her from his brothers selfish move.

Historia
This transcendent story follows four college friends who move to New York City, buoyed by ambition: Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; and, at the center, Jude, a withdrawn, brilliant attorney haunted by an unspeakable past. Through decades of shared and separate lives, Jude’s suffering - and its impact on those who love him - raises questions about the limits of human endurance, the possibility for redemption, and the meaning of friendship.

A dark, yet compelling story.
Revisado: 08-14-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I think the book could have been much shorter and yet still tell the story. The never ending reflection of the sexual and physical abuse Jude survived as a child, although extremely disturbing and depressing, explains why he was self destructive and broken but they seemed repetitive. His self inflicted abuse was, to me, excessive. Then as an adult he meets people who embrace and love him but never try to get him the help he needs to heal especially Harold, Julia, and Willem which was to me crazy making. Then his "doctor" Andy, who in my opinion was a HUGE enabler and NOT a doctor…more crazy making. So to answer your question I think the book could have been written with a lot less drama and still get the message across.
Would you ever listen to anything by Hanya Yanagihara again?
If this is her norm then no. I found "A Little Life" to be way too dark to be enjoyable.
What does Oliver Wyman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His voice is easy to listen to and each character was easy to distinguish. I enjoyed his work but not the book for the story line.
Could you see A Little Life being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
I wouldn't be interested in watching this if it was made into a movie…too depressing! I get that there are bad people in the world but it seems that out of all the people Jude met or befriended, except a handful were cruel and evil. It was as if he was a magnet for the degenerate humans in his path. Even Calvin who surprise, surprise raped and brutalized him and was never made to be accountable??? Yes its also a love story and that is a credit to Hanya for putting something positive in this book but as a movie, which to me should be entertaining, I don't see this as an entertaining subject.
Any additional comments?
Its been a week since I finished this book and am still disturbed by it. I'm confused and befuddled why this book got such good reviews unless those people like dark, disturbing drama. For me I struggled to finish the book. I've given it a lot of thought as to why I didn't just quit listening to it and think I was hoping it would get better. Maybe that was Hanya's plan.

Maybe he can tell her what happened to her son.

Slow, crazy, boring story.
Revisado: 07-17-16
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The author could have done so much more with the characters. I got tired of hearing how "crazy" Anna was, the detective was always angry and incompetent never getting his way and poor Daniel.
What was most disappointing about Belinda Bauer’s story?
It just dragged on…and on…and on! I kept waiting for something interesting to happen.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Andrew Wincott?
Yes, no complaints with the narrator.
