Sad, but needed to hear their story...
Revisado: 09-22-21
I almost didn't want to listen to this book even though I knew it was a story of ultimate inspiration with a sort of happy ending. Being an animal lover and dog owner of a rescue, I get that the story needed to be told and I need to hear it, even though it created a great deal of emotion.
That being said, the first part was very sad, and gratefully, the second part was not so sad and gives one hope that sad tales can have a better result. I am filled with outrage about the world of any kind of animal fighting that causes the senseless torture of animals for man to enjoy as "sport." So, I think that is why I listened all the way through this one. As distasteful as this subject matter was for me, I needed to know. Kudos to all the people who cared enough and helped from all over the country to save and rehabilitate these dogs. I know that pit bulls have a bad reputation, but that is humans' fault, not the dog. I think this book does much to help dispel that bad reputation.
I also have to wonder if the treatment some of these dogs received at some of the shelters on their way to being truly cared for and rehabilitated was just another form of abuse/neglect?
This issue also brings up the consequences for those engaged in a caught in dogfighting. Clearly, for Michael Vick, it was just a blip in his football career and for his future. Basically very little jail time for spawning such cruelty... and his life was more or less back to normal. Unfortunately, he is just one among many who engage in this type of activity.

Just couldn't get into the story...
Revisado: 08-12-21
While I usually like Tom Clancy's stories, and like thrillers and mysteries... this one I couldn't get into. Stopped listening about halfway through. Sorry, Tom!!
Glad I didn't pay for it with a credit!

Sad existence … not my cup of tea!
Revisado: 06-05-21
I usually don't write reviews, but this book compelled me to do so. While I got through 80% of the book, though it was well written and the narrator did a very good job of conveying the fabric of the story, I was bored and had to stop listening. I'll never know how it ended, but I doubt there was any great event or revelation to greatly change the overall story. The subject matter was not ideal for me, and I felt sorry for the character in his methodical lonely life ... waiting for something more to happen. It had elements of humor and fantasy, but not enough to hold my interest. I suppose if you like this sort of character examination and a deep dive into the psyche of a person living an ordinary and unremarkable life then you will like this book. Glad I didn't use a credit for this one!

Unapologtic heroine!
Revisado: 11-14-18
I was a bit skeptical when I read the first book in this series, but grew to love Charlotte Holmes. It's tough being a woman in Victorian Britain, but she does her best to live life on her terms, by outwitting, outcharming, and just plain outthinking her detractors. This female twist on Sherlock Holmes is brilliant, with matched mysteries and crimes to solve worthy of a great intellect. The way Thomas weaves in elements and characters from the Sherlock Holmes books into this series is masterful and equally intriguing. I found Kate Reading's narration a bit too monotone for all of the characters. For Charlotte, I thought she was perfect, but many of the other characters sounded like Charlotte. In spite of the narration, I look forward to another read in this series and the next buck at tradition that Charlotte offers up! #AmateurDetective #Clever #Provocative #FemaleProtagonist #Victorian England #Tagsgiving #Sweepstakes

Historia
When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, Mrs. Quine just thinks her husband has gone off by himself for a few days - as he has done before - and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, he discovers that Quine's disappearance is no coincidence. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were published, it would ruin lives - meaning that almost everyone in his life would have motives to silence him.

Believable characters
Revisado: 11-14-18
I love the humanity of the characters, Comoran and Robin. They are not superhuman, or exceptionally gifted, but they fit. I like the struggle they have with each other as they go about trying to solve the cases. Yea, it's a bit cliché, unrequited attraction and sexual tension, but I still like it and enjoy the stories. You get two stories rolled into one--their personal journeys and the mysteries which need to be solved. I have read every book in the series so far (unfortunately not in order), and look forward to the next. The plot, marries past family secrets, suicide, politics and murder. Dysfunctional families and people in general is an understatement and a uncomplimentary mirror on the British well to do in this mystery. Lots of angles and avenues to get to the finale, which kept me guessing the whole way through. Glenister is the perfect gritty voice for Strike and even makes me believe, it is Robin when he becomes her or the other female characters. #TorturedHero #QuirkyFamilies #DysfunctionalFamilies #PastMeetsPresent #Tagsgiving #Sweepstakes

So, so
Revisado: 01-31-18
Would you try another book from John Conroe and/or James Patrick Cronin?
John Conroe, probably not. Cronin, maybe.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Certainly set things up for a sequel
Have you listened to any of James Patrick Cronin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Not sure
Did Snake Eyes inspire you to do anything?
Yes, not spend my money on another in this series.
Any additional comments?
It wasn't absolutely horrible, but I guess the story line really didn't grab me. I kept listening hoping it would get better and it did slightly, but the writing was not intriguing and perhaps a bit too unreal for me. I like fantasy, but this book just wasn't my cup of tea.

Great mystery typical of Johnson & this series!
Revisado: 01-31-18
If you could sum up The Cold Dish in three words, what would they be?
A great story
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Not really on the edge of my seat, but certainly interested with twists and the richness of the characters. Didn't expect the end.
Have you listened to any of George Guidall’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
He does an excellent job of the voice of Walt Longmire.
Any additional comments?
Wasn't sure I liked the end. It was a surprise that I didn't see coming and was very little of the why, or maybe I just didn't get it. Overall, I love the Longmire series and the cast of interesting and complex characters, the humor, and the depiction of law and order in the modern "old west".
