Historia
The Lone Texan features Sage McMurray, a recent widow whose life is about to take another unexpected turn. One would think that the loss of a husband was plenty for anyone to deal with, but then Sage is taken hostage in a robbery and auctioned off to the highest bidder. The bidder in question, however, has more than a few surprises in store.

Ready for Your Grandma to Read you a Romance?
Revisado: 12-27-11
What would have made The Lone Texan better?
An interesting plot would help. The plot isn't that complicated and doesn't really have a significant climax. Frankly, the story was not that interesting, and I only finished it because it distracted me while I was cleaning house. To me, it seems like authors are pushed to write and publish too fast, and their books end up reading like there was little thought invested in them. I would gladly delete the book from my library if I could just have my credit back.
Has The Lone Texan turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, but it feels like it is getting harder and harder to find an intelligent romance.
What didn’t you like about Linda Stevens’s performance?
Narrator does an okay job narrating, but her voice shakes like an elderly woman, and it just sounds weird that someone who sounds like Betty White is reading me a romance. The 21 year-old hero sounded like an old woman -- it's just weird.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Deep sigh and disappointment.
Any additional comments?
I was hard to finish the novel.

Historia
With an ailing mother to care for, Lisa Grant takes the first job she can find: research assistant to District Attorney Scott Buchanan. What Lisa expects to be a mind-numbingly boring task turns into anything but when a missing-persons case draws her attention. The details of the case are engrossing: an entire family — father, mother, and two children — disappeared without a trace more than 28 years ago. Except that’s not all: the mother in a photo Lisa finds could be her own twin.

A Good Read
Revisado: 08-27-10
I've suddenly become a fan of Karen Robards. Her books are full of suspense, mystery, the mysterious, romance, and they typically end with a little twist. I really enjoyed this book, and I don't understand the negative reviews. The narrator is a bit slow, but it did not detract from my reading experience. I would pick this book again--no regrets.

It's not Cruise's fault; it's the narrator's.
Revisado: 07-16-10
Okay, this is one of my absolute favorite books. I've read the book dozens of times, so when I saw that Audible had it, I was extremely excited, until I listened to the book. Under ordinary circumstances, the narrator would be great, but she is NO Cranky Agnes (I was picturing a Sandra Bullock type character). Her voice is all fragile and sugary sweet and her comic timing was almost non-existent! Not just anyone can "act" (because that is what a good reader does) in a comedy. Many of Agnes' one-liners and snarky comments that were so hilarious in the book did not even reach the comedic richter scale in this audio. This is really a shame because it probably will be years and years before they re-tape this book with another narrator--(note to publishers: next time people, be more cautious in chosing a Cranky Agnes). The readers on Welcome to Temptation (Vigesaa) and Wild Ride (Dawe) were terrific! They get Cruise's comedy.
In this case, this book should be read first.
I promise, if they re-tape the book with a better reader, I will definitely buy it!!!

Oh, pluuuuze
Revisado: 05-27-10
Yes, I agree with previous reviews, Simon Prebble is great. However, that is all I agree with them about. The story? "ech." I wanted something light while I did some house/yard work, but that doesn't mean I don't want a worthy plot! But I guess, judging by the amount of books available on AB, that readers like Laurens.
This book has too much sex, and in scenes that last too long. And I can't believe *I* just said that! Ever heard the phrase, "Leave 'em wanting more." Well, this left me wanting it done; subtlety is sexier.
If you cut out all the sex scenes, the book would last about 2 hours. I guess if your spouse is out of town, get the book.

A New York Times best seller, Founding Brothers is an engrossing work of nonfiction from National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Joseph J. Ellis. It is a book that uncovers the substance behind many of our most cherished historical tales. Here are six fascinating, well-researched chapters involving such icons as George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison.

Just get past the first chapter and you're fine
Revisado: 05-20-10
If you can bear through the first chapter about "the duel," you'll be okay. Both the narrative and the narration get better after that.
Other than that, I agree with previous reviews. Ellis is fantastic. There's probably nothing new if you are a history grad student, but for those that aren't, the book is very informative.

Love Chopin and Frasier
Revisado: 05-20-10
I absolutely love Kate Chopin--everything she writes is thought provoking and intense, full of double-voice discourse. Personally, I don't think anyone can understand Edna Pontellier unless she is at least 25 and has been married. The book speaks to me each and every time I read/listen to it--in fact, as I become older, I read and react to the book differently (Bakhtin's chronotope). The Awakening is one of my all-time favorite books.
If you are into traditional romances, like Harlequin, you would likely not like this book.
Shelly Frasier is fantastic. Her laid-back rhythm and cadence really evokes the New Orlean vibe and feeling.

Sister Carrie

Historia
Sister Carrie is about a young country girl who moves to the big city, where she begins to realize her own American Dream by embarking on a life of sin rather than hard work and perseverance. At the time of its first publication, the novel caused a minor scandal, and Dreiser had difficulty finding a publisher for it. This was due to its blurred division between good and bad and the fact that, at the end, Carrie is rewarded rather than punished for her immoral life.

Thumbs down on Narrator
Revisado: 05-20-10
I loved this book, and I love Dreiser, but the narrator was monotone and monotonous. I had to bear with her because I had to read this book for a class and needed to listen to it while I did household chores. I hope that in the future one of the audio companies will re-do the book with a better narrator.
As far as the book is concerned. Carrie works her way to the top using whatever means she can (i.e., sex--but not explicit at all). Typically, 19th century women had to be punished for having premarital sex, but Dreiser chose to, instead, punish the male--a bold move that garnered him much criticism. A great study class systems--working class rags to riches (and even a riches to rags sub story).
If you like this book, you might want to read Stephen Crane's *Maggie,* unfortunately, not yet on audiobooks, and/or William Dean Howell's *Silas Lapham,* (another worthless narrator--but a really great book none-the-less).
