For those who lived through the events of this era—I was 12 when JFK was assassinated, and like most of my time it stands as a landmark memory—this tale is absolutely fascinating and, though fiction, believable. Ellroy’s style is unique; immediately captivating and unforgettable.

Can’t wait to hear or read the other pieces of this series. American Tabloid is outstanding. The performance is flawless; maybe the best I’ve experienced. 5+ all the way.

Jonah Goldberg’s powerful analysis of the perils faced by present-day Western society, how we got to this pinnacle of liberty and enlightenment, and the corruptive forces that human nature portends should we fail to protect the “miracle” that led to this rare achievement, should be required reading for all Americans regardless of political persuasion or personal identity. It’s at once exhilarating in its promise, and terrifying in its implications for our future.

Not satisfying at all... feels like half a book

I felt like I only got half of a book! Although the prior two books in this series were not my favorite, they were solid. I was suspicious at first when I saw that this book was only 5 hours long, but was committed to buying it since I wanted to know how the story ended. I should have listened to my gut.

This book starts out several years in the future with our heroes Harris and Dupree basically hunting each other for some unknown falling out they had. Then, just as it starts to get interesting, we are taken back to the past to find out why they are no longer friends. Then, just as that starts to get interesting, the book ends! What happened? I feel like the publisher must have told the author he had to turn in whatever he had, like being forced to put your pencil down at the end of an exam, before you are finished. Very disappointing.

But, I guess it worked, because I am going to buy Book 4 now (probably in a couple years) because I still want to know what happened.

After listening to this performance by the huge cast, I cannot imagine how boring it would be to read. My imagination just wouldn't have done it the justice. I highly recommend this creative, and different take on a zombie apocalypse.

If you didn't like the movie, it doesn't matter. The only similarity is the title.

Overall, this was very good. The narrator was among the worst I've heard though. However he is tolerable once you get used to him. The story outlines the systematic collapse of a near future America through the personal stories of a large cast of characters with separate but merging story lines. Maybe slightly oversimplified, but well thought out, and the suspense keeps you interested the entire time. Beware though, you are buying into a series, and this book alone is not satisfying without continuing to the future volumes.

Rain is great, Eisler makes some rookie mistakes

This is a great, entertaining, and suspenseful book. Eisler introduces John Rain to us, and I love every minute of it. The details are described so vividly, that I feel like I know, and am a part of Rain's world. If you are looking for a great series, this is the book you start at.

Nishii does a pretty good job with the narration, however, I like it better in the later books when Eisler performs them

My only complaint is that Eisler makes some rookie mistakes in the plot. It is a little cheesy that he has Harry and Midori have to get together to decrypt the "music" code... and I think that Midori's entire reaction to Rain is far too Hollywood.
