Historia
Barbra Streisand is by any account a living legend, a woman who in a career spanning six decades has excelled in every area of entertainment. She is among the handful of EGOT winners (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) and has one of the greatest and most recognizable voices in the history of popular music. She has been nominated for a Grammy 46 times, and with Yentl she became the first woman to write, produce, direct, and star in a major motion picture. In My Name Is Barbra, she tells her own story about her life and extraordinary career.

Delightful and moving
Revisado: 03-14-24
An extremely in-depth look at an extraordinary life and career. Extremely moving, funny, insightful, and inspiring. Beautifully read (and sometimes sung!) by the author.

Historia
Thirty years after a tragic accident shut down production of the classic children’s program Mister Magic, the five surviving cast members have done their best to move on. But just as generations of cultishly devoted fans still cling to the lessons they learned from the show, the cast, known as the Circle of Friends, have spent their lives searching for the happiness they felt while they were on it. The friendship. The feeling of belonging. And the protection of Mister Magic.

Repetitive
Revisado: 08-29-23
I really liked the premise of this book and was excited about it, I was especially excited because Rebecca Lowman is reading it and she’s my favorite! Turns out she’s the only thing I really liked about it. It just felt like the same thing was happening over and over and over again, and I am actually abandoning it at 20 minutes before the end.

Historia
Med school dropout Lena is desperate for a job, any job, to help her parents, who are approaching bankruptcy after her father was injured and laid off nearly simultaneously. So when she is offered a position, against all odds, working for one of Boston’s most elite families, the illustrious and secretive Verdeaus, she knows she must accept—no matter how bizarre the interview or how vague the job description. By day, she is assistant to the family doctor and his charge—the sickly, poetic, drunken heir to the family empire, who is as difficult as his illness is mysterious.

Repetitive and dull
Revisado: 12-14-22
DNF. I can’t make myself wade through any more of the lead character’s endless internal guilt/lust monologues as the thin story plays itself out. Barely enough plot here for a short story.

Historia
A young girl aspiring to be a writer recounts her experiences growing up in England during the Second World War. An English schoolgirl has problems, many of them funny, in her attempts to grow up socially. A reissue. Literature of Delight. Headstrong, independent Jessica, at 13, already knows she will be a writer. This early work from a fine British novelist is one of her wittiest. A treasure for sophisticated readers, who won't be shy about seeking out Gardam's adult novels as well, such as Robinson Crusoe's Daughter.

Hilarious and delightful

What made the experience of listening to A Long Way from Verona the most enjoyable?
A wonderful reading of a book that should be much better known than it is. (Check out the Backlisted podcast for an excellent discussion of the book, if you're interested.)
What did you like best about this story?
An incredibly honest and extremely funny lead character, whose journey towards adulthood is like no other. Loved her and loved the reading.

Historia
In the eastern reaches of the Thames lies the Hispaniola, an inn kept by Jim Hawkins and his son. Late one night, a mysterious girl named Natty arrives on the river with a request for Jim from her father - Long John Silver. Aged and weak, but still possessing a strange power, the pirate proposes Jim and Natty sail to Treasure Island in search of Captain Flint's hidden bounty. But the thrill of the ocean odyssey gives way to terror as the Nightingale reaches its destination, for it seems Treasure Island is not as uninhabited as it once was....

Wait... it's over?
Revisado: 12-05-13
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I really enjoyed it because David Tennant. The book's well-written and entertaining, but I was nonplussed by the abrupt ending and had to look to make sure there wasn't supposed to be another part to the audiobook.
Would you be willing to try another book from Andrew Motion? Why or why not?
I suppose I will have to read the sequel to this because I need to know what happens next... which shows that Mr. Motion got me hooked enough to want to carry on.
What does David Tennant bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He's a remarkable actor who brings all the characters to life. It's always easy to tell who's talking because he doesn't just read the book, he really acts all the parts and makes them vivid and unique. I've listened to a lot of Tennant's audiobooks and I think this is one of his best.
Could you see Silver being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
I could see this being a movie.
