Historia
Private Detective Cormoran Strike is contacted by a worried father whose son, Will, has gone to join a religious cult in the depths of the Norfolk countryside. The Universal Humanitarian Church is, on the surface, a peaceable organization that campaigns for a better world. Yet Strike discovers that beneath the surface there are deeply sinister undertones, and unexplained deaths.

Beautifully written, perfectly narrated
Revisado: 10-01-23
Robert Galbraith/JKR and Robert Glenister have outdone themselves with this one. The plot is complicated, carefully crafted, and entirely compelling. The narration is skillfully done. I had to pause sometimes to feel in awe of Glenister’s performance. JKR offers some deep insight into cult leaders’ manipulation methods.

While I grieve our loss of MC Beaton, Agatha lives on in all her glory at the most capable hands of RW Green and the brilliant voice of Penelope Keith. This book is a wonderful addition to the series with its thoroughly captivating plot, perfect timing, and engaging characters. Loved it.

Historia
Samara Stavros had been taught all her life never to wish. In a moment of weakness she ignored that lesson and made an innocent wish. It came true, but suddenly, things began to go wrong in her life. Now, Sam has to find out what's going on before it's too late. That, along with being a 17-year-old girl did not make Sam's life easy. The betrayal of old friends, the joy of new friends, the mysterious boy with indigo eyes, along with the desire to wish again and again, she's not at all sure what's going on in her life.

Be careful what you wish for!
Revisado: 07-19-21
Shannon Reber has a remarkable facility with dialogue, especially teenage-speak and attitudes. The characters pulled me in and the storyline kept me engaged till the end when I wished the 2nd of the series was available to binge on. I love Shannon's imagination and the way she unfolds a plot. The Cintamani wish-fulfilling jewell comes alive -- but no spoilers here.

New narrator should've listened to Lisette Lecat
Revisado: 12-01-20
When a beloved series changes narrators, the new narrator should at least try not to re-create the characters' voices radically when there are so many dedicated fans who love the characters. Twenty books that have established these characters, their voices, and their relationships precede this book. Suddenly the characters are shrieking caricatures. I find it difficult to make out the story line through the barrage of these voices. Sadly, I would have to recommend the print book over this audiobook.

As with all the wonderful offerings Rosalee de la Forêt and Emily Han have been creating with Herb Mentor and Learning Herbs, this audiobook presents a plenitude of knowledge with guidance for integrating practices and insights into the way we live. The accompanying pdf book chapters with links to supplements and resources provide the sensational plant illustrations, botanical diagrams, and photographs from the print book along with the recipes. Printing out the beautiful linked journal and following along with Rosalee's and Emily's voices makes using this audiobook a hands-on teaching/learning experience. As a student of herbalism for many years, I'm delighted to explore everything this fabulous audiobook has to offer.

Death is not waiting for us at the end of a long road. Death is always with us, in the marrow of every passing moment. She is the secret teacher hiding in plain sight, helping us to discover what matters most. Life and death are a package deal. They cannot be pulled apart, and we cannot truly live unless we are aware of death. The Five Invitations is an exhilarating meditation on the meaning of life and how maintaining an ever-present consciousness of death can bring us closer to our truest selves.

deeply moving
Revisado: 03-03-19
I love audio books, love being read to, so I chose the audible.com version of Frank Ostaseski's The Five Invitations. Mr. Ostaseski narrates this deeply moving book himself, which heightens the authenticity as well as intensifies the intimacy of his storytelling and of his sharing profound insights gained from 30 years of his calling to sit and listen and speak with dying people at the Zen Hospice Project in San Francisco. Having recently lost my dear younger sister to cancer, I thought this book would help me in my grieving, offering some comfort to my sorrow. I was right about that. Sadness for the loss of a loved one can sneak up at odd times. Grief can trigger chaotic emotions. Listening to Frank Ostaseski's soft-spoken voice reading his poetic words, contemplating the significance of impermanence and nonattachment to the human condition, reminds me that I am not alone. This is a gorgeous book.

Historia
While Blandings Castle sleeps in the summer sun, the Hon. Galahad Threepwood, brother of the Earl of Emsworth, is busily engaged in writing his Reminiscences, and they look set to be as warm as the weather, if not warmer. For Galahad has led a thoroughly misspent life, and his acquaintances can all too easily recall their past follies in his company. Reputations are at stake and even the nobility and gentry are beginning to panic.

Best Narrator Ever!
Revisado: 01-01-17
Another wacky Wodhouse story with a resourceful butler, bullying aunts, and clueless young blue bloods trying to marry. This narrator John Wells is a master of comedic voices, making me laugh out loud as much at his inflections, accents, and characterizations as at Wodehouse's witticisms and plot twists. Lots of fun.

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

wonderful book -- one thing missing
Revisado: 11-25-16
In this fascinating memoir, Trevor Noah offers hard won insight and wisdom regarding his tumultuous childhood in post-apartheid South Africa. Beautifully written, and narrated with Noah's acute talent for accents and vocal impersonations, this memoir paints a detailed picture of how the country's transition affected groups as well as individual people. But it leaves out one thing -- the answer to one major question. How did Trevor Noah's life take the turn from a childhood of domestic abuse and an adolescence of rebellious lawlessness to his becoming a flourishing stand up comic? How did he make such a wide-spread name for himself that he eventually comes to the Daily Show? This story would've added more depth and understanding to his trajectory.

surprisingly predictable
Revisado: 12-21-15
After reading the reviews, I thought this would be a complex psychological exploration with a surprising twist (or two), but I found it to be rather simplistic and predictable. The protagonist's arrogant blundering precludes sympathy. The monologues by the sociopath could've been lifted out of any textbook description of that condition. However, the novel doesn't really offer insight into the plight of colleagues, friends, lovers who are unfortunate enough to get ensnarled in the web of a sociopath, which necessitates a deeper and more subtle treatment than this.
