A child's memory of Nagasaki after bomb
Revisado: 02-07-18
I was very moved by this book, the personal story of a young girl who was jut 6 years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. She and her family lost their home and had to endure the horrors of burns and radiation sickness. I think that the book was originally written for younger readers, but I think the story is one everyone should know. Sachiko survived and then dedicated her life to telling her story in the hopes that the world will never again see such horror.

Stephen Fry makes Sherlock Holmes even better
Revisado: 08-06-17
This recording is an amazing feat of voice acting on the part of Stephen Fry, a Holmes fan since boyhood. The stories really come to life in the audio version. Truly a great audio experience.

Historia
Few diseases are more gruesome than typhus. Transmitted by body lice, it afflicts the dispossessed - refugees, soldiers, and ghettoized peoples - causing hallucinations, terrible headaches, boiling fever, and often death. The disease plagued the German army on the Eastern Front and left the Reich desperate for a vaccine. For this they turned to the brilliant and eccentric Polish zoologist Rudolf Weigl.

Fascinating story, told well and read well
Revisado: 02-08-17
I learned about Dr. Weigl's story a while ago from a radio story when the book came out. The book is amazing in the way that it follows several very complicated stories -- the histry of typhus and of Polish science and of WWII and the Holocaust and the Resistance and vaccinology and public health in the first half of the 20th century. It is a story that is not well-known and well worth learning about.
One caution I would have about the audio version is that there are lots of individuals whose stories contributed to this. I did have some trouble following all the names through the various phases of the history. I referred to the print copy of the book for some things, just to help me connect the various characters. It is not strictly necessary to do this, but I was glad I had access to the book and audio version at the same time.

Historia
In Ghost Train to the Eastern Star, Paul Theroux retraces the steps he took thirty years ago in his classic The Great Railway Bazaar. From the Eurostar in London, he once again sets out on a journey to the East, travelling overland through Eastern Europe, India and Asia. Infused with the changes that have shaped the exterior landscape and enriched with developments to his own perceptions and psychology, Ghost Train to the Eastern Star is an absorbing and beautifully written follow-up to The Great Railway Bazaar.

A more mature Theroux retraces his earlier journey
Revisado: 10-20-16
I am a Theroux fan so was predisposed to like this book anyway. But it was especially good because he was retracing journey he described in The Great Railway Bazaar. The journey had changed and so had the man himself.

Historia
One of the most admired nonfiction writers of our time retells the story of one truly fabulous year in the life of his native country - a fascinating and gripping narrative featuring such outsized American heroes as Charles Lindbergh, Babe Ruth, and yes Herbert Hoover, and a gallery of criminals (Al Capone), eccentrics (Shipwreck Kelly), and close-mouthed politicians (Calvin Coolidge). It was the year Americans attempted and accomplished outsized things and came of age in a big, brawling manner. What a country. What a summer. And what a writer to bring it all so vividly alive.

Knew it would be good, turned out to be excellent
Revisado: 10-20-16
Bill Bryson paints a portrait of America in 1927 by weaving threads from many aspects of American life between the two world wars -- Prohibition, aviation, crime and punishment, the rise of tabloid media, baseball, radio, movies, etc. It's a complicated picture, but very well executed. I picked this book thinking it might be mildly interesting because I have enjoyed other books by Bryson, but it was so much better that I had expected.

Fascinating and provocative
Revisado: 06-02-16
This is a fantastic walk through the many psychological aspects of trauma. The author presents many stories from his own experience with patients and talks through various approaches to treatment. He includes research-based methods and then talks about some that have not been thoroughly tested but show promise. It is a great way to understand the complexity of trauma and PTSD.
The reader of the book was good but had an odd habit of pausing at random points, as if sentences were scattered with commas.

Amazing, rich, and riveting
Revisado: 11-21-15
EC's way with words is evident in his songs and no less so in this book. He weaves the story of his life, his musical accomplishments, and his personal life in his unique style. The audiobook is much richer than the printed book because he reads it himself, and he conveys meaning beyond words in his speaking voice the way his does in his singing.
Even longtime fans will come away impressed with the breadth and depth of his work, some of it virtually unknown in the mainstream of popular music. He tells with his many collaborations and tremendous respect and affection for artists in every corner of the music business. He writes of his roots, his family, his loves and misadventures.
This is a book that is well worth the time and effort of listening to rather than reading on the printed page. It is truly a spectacular memoir.
