Historia
Bunny McGarry is back – and he’d really like a nice holiday. Somewhere with hot weather and cold drinks that come with little umbrellas for reasons he never understood. A certain nun has other ideas though and instead, he finds himself dispatched to London to find Sean Malone, a runaway teenager who doesn’t know his mother hasn’t got long left to live. The only leads Bunny has are a last-known address for the deadbeat dad Sean had gone in search of, and some letters the teenager had sent to his mum, one of which included a picture of him with the current heavyweight champion of the world.

Great to have Bunny back in the UK and Ireland. More of that please! (less of the US) Wonderful writing and narration, as always.

Sorry I usually love you JD Kirk and David Tennant, but this is absurd
Revisado: 03-22-25
The main character and her voice actor is so whiny and unlikeable, I struggled to finish it, speeding up to 1.5x speed from halfway to get through the unnecessary repetitiveness, ridiculously clueless woman (in 2024/5!!) and exaggerated overthinking. Got to the end and was going to return this for a refund but then realised I got it for free. Yes David Tennant is spectacular but features only briefly, and he cannot rescue this book on his own. Not a fan of his (supposedly AI) character either, so that didn’t help. Addressing the problem of loneliness with AI is however a valid social issue to consider. Wish it looked at that more earnestly than the inane human squabbling and emotion that dragged ON AND ON, and technology fear mongering. Also, final note to JD Kirk: you are not winning us over with your female main characters, not here and not Heather Filson. Stick with men please, and Berta.

Historia
Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

Perfect narration
Revisado: 02-17-25
Beautiful story made even better by J.K. Simmons’ narration 👏 He’s fantastic actor and narrator. I tried to listen years ago after a family tragedy and could not get into it. Tried again this time after seeing the movie and truly enjoyed it. Not without tears this time either but I finished it and smiled at the closing paragraphs.

A great except for that Australian accent!
Revisado: 01-20-25
Five stars overall. The book and the narration are great and I’m keen to keep listening. But omg that Australian accent is unrecognisable! 😱

Historia
Judith Potts is 77 years old and blissfully happy. She lives on her own in a faded mansion just outside Marlow, there’s no man in her life to tell her what to do or how much whisky to drink, and to keep herself busy she sets crosswords for The Times newspaper. One evening, while out swimming in the Thames, Judith witnesses a brutal murder. The local police don’t believe her story, so she decides to investigate for herself and is soon joined in her quest by Suzie, a salt-of-the-earth dog-walker, and Becks, the prim and proper wife of the local vicar.

Shallow and plain silly
Revisado: 01-09-25
Ridiculously non-credible and over the top cutesy, stereotypical, simplistic and unimaginative. While I love Christie and other clever but homely British murder mysteries, this is overly homely and cutesy — and not clever. I scoffed or shook my head too often; and will not continue the book series or watch the tv adaptation. You are doing English towns and women a disservice. Narration was ok except for the microphone “pops” (vocal plosives), poor editing leaving in a narrator error and restart, and the Anglicised mispronunciation of the Hindi name Shanti supposedly by her own Hindi mother Tanika.

Didn’t love it
Revisado: 12-18-24
I like the narrator, which led me to this book. It’s an interesting premise but it was too melodramatic. The narrator was still good but not great. Not continuing on with this series.

They have been asked by a member of Norfolk's aristocracy to look into the tragic death of her younger brother, Freddie, the late Lord Thorpe of the title. The inquest verdict was of misadventure, but it isn't long before Smith begins to suspect there has been a serious miscarriage of justice.

Struggling to finish - too cutesy
Revisado: 11-18-24
I am struggling to finish this. The story and characters are far too “cute”. And the narration is becoming so slow and deliberate that I had to speed it up. I’ve listened to all previous DC Smith books and enjoyed the low stress, picturesque, but informative storytelling. This is overdoing it completely, far too picturesque and “lovely”. The narration makes it worse.

Historia
When a local man, a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, goes missing, his parents have good reason to be concerned. Emily Willows is a friend of the family and says that she knows just the person to find him - and, as Summer Lane soon points out, the fact that this also fits in with Emily's plan to set up her very own detective agency is surely just a fortuitous coincidence.

Good book. Really enjoy Peter Grainger’s writing, here too but especially in the DC Smith series. Not a fan of the narrator, so not continuing with this series.

Good but not as good as the others
Revisado: 10-05-24
This was just a tad overly dramatic. The whole “I murdered someone” felt like a distraction throughout, even when it was first presented. Oh come on, your conscience has been bugging you ever since and now you’re going to die by this sword? Nope. Unconvincing. Not to mention the demented daughter of a former foe, who turned out to be not quite as evil. Nup. Not convinced. Too creative, not relatable. Made me wonder if the author had run out of ideas for this series. Love this series and this narrator but this one was a miss for me.

As it turns out, an awful lot. Bunny and co are supposed to be keeping a low profile, but nature calls and ironically, one of their party has a hard and fast rule about not answering that call while surrounded by nature. This is how they end up in the wrong bar, surrounded by the wrong people at the wrongest of wrong times. The local right-wing militia has a big week planned, and Bunny and the boys have inadvertently crashed the party. Before they know it, they’re in a desperate fight for survival against a bunch of people who refuse to believe they’re not who they think they are.

It’s time Bunny finds Simone and returns to Ireland
Revisado: 06-16-24
It’s gone on too long. I’ve now read (listened to) ALL the books. This is my first non-5-star review.
I felt this story was story for the sake of it. New characters introduced, again. Diversification to keep us entertained. And while I love the writing, I admit I became impatient and want the sisters found, Simone found, a happy reunion, and a return to Ireland. There was too much talking and filler detail here, at least in my view.
Bunny can return from the dead in Ireland (what a story!), and resume his story alongside Paul, Brigit and the likeable Jimmy Stewart. And the sisters too, of course.
