Historia
The Trail is a moving story of how nature helps us find what’s missing in our lives. The tale begins with Gil, who in the wake of his father’s death and recently fired from his job, agrees to accompany his father’s old hiking partner Syd on a month-long trek on the John Muir Trail. There’s just one problem: Gil hates camping and is woefully unprepared for the rigors of the journey. Moreover, he soon learns Syd may not survive the hike.

The main character was an unlikable, immature brat without any of the character development promised in the summary.

As a child growing up in the wild beauty of the Ozarks, Barbara often spent her days exploring outside and daydreaming of faraway places in order to escape a life of poverty. She longed to trade her homemade clothes and outdoor toilet for spectacular adventures around the world. That chance came in the form of a wild-eyed, long-haired Viking-like young man named Peter. After an exciting courtship and a wedding on a dime, the young couple departed on foot from New Orleans on July 5, 1976, heading toward the Pacific Coast.

Not sure what book the others were reviewing…
Revisado: 11-26-23
Yet another example why an author should not narrate their own book. Both the narration and story were completely unlistenable and I returned the book within 3 chapters. Save your credit and/or your time and find another book.

I couldn’t get past the first half hour, it seems more than rambling thoughts versus an actual book and yet another example as to why authors shouldn’t narrate their own books. Yikes.

ALL The CLICHES

I feel like this book is the result of the author striving to see if she can include every possible Chick Lit cliche into one plot. Spoiler alert: she does.

Historia
In the best-selling tradition of Bill Bryson and Tony Horwitz, Rinker Buck's The Oregon Trail is a major work of participatory history: an epic account of traveling the entire 2,000-mile length of the Oregon Trail the old-fashioned way, in a covered wagon with a team of mules - which hasn't been done in a century - that also tells the rich history of the trail, the people who made the migration, and its significance to the country.

Not what I expected...
Revisado: 07-09-15
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointed with the author's attitude about so many people, he referred to Individuals who drive RVs, Tourists, Individuals who drive Mini Vans, Mormons, Cops as "morons or idiots".
Any additional comments?
I was expecting the focus of this book about an authentic crossing of the Oregon trail, however - with the exception of his actual path, not much seemed to be authentic, he brought many creature comforts, had access to a truck, cell phone, and other modern conveniences.

The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Certainly isn't Unbroken
Revisado: 12-08-14
Would you try another book from Daniel James Brown and/or Edward Herrmann?
Love Edward Herrmann as a narrator
Was The Boys in the Boat worth the listening time?
It was good, but not GREAT - I'm sure it was reccommended because I LOVED Unbroken which had similar themes, 1936 Olympics, WWII, etc - but not nearly as amazing as Unbroken was.

Historia
Throughout these books, Follett has followed the fortunes of five intertwined families - American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh - as they make their way through the twentieth century. Now they come to one of the most tumultuous eras of all: the enormous social, political, and economic turmoil of the 1960s through the 1980s, from civil rights, assassinations, mass political movements and Vietnam to the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, presidential impeachment, revolution - and rock and roll.

Worth a Listen - Not as Good as First 2
Revisado: 10-02-14
Is there anything you would change about this book?
More creative story surrounding the beginning of Plum Nelly band story line, seemed to mirror the true story of the beginning of the Beatles too much.
If you’ve listened to books by Ken Follett before, how does this one compare?
This was my least favorite of any book by Ken Follet. I much perfer the Pillar of the Earth series.
Did John Lee do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Average, really disliked the voice he used for Jackie Jakes, wasn't enough different from the voice for George Jakes, make listening to their dialog difficult.
