Simone St. James continues to be one of my all time favorite authors. Creative, interesting story. I listened to the audiobook in a single day.

Slow, but I stuck with it

I thought this was a worthwhile listen, but slow and leaving a lot unanswered. I’ll continue the series and hope that the gradual build is leading to worthy conclusions. I like the characters and the storylines. I’m interested to see where it goes.

Very well written. The unconscionable crimes are explained, but in such a way that the focus stays where the heart is, which is with the sibling relationship that supersedes everything else. This is a ghost story based on human experiences, not relying on horror or magic. The twists were compelling. A couple of times, I prepared myself to be frustrated, but then I wasn’t at all. Each initiative or line of investigation was handled quickly and kept the story moving. I was curious and invested in the characters and how they interacted. I loved the brother and sister. This was a good ghost story mystery that handled a difficult scenario well.

Interesting history

Educational and interesting history, particularly since information is so limited for women in this era. I really appreciated the content.

Narration was odd. Every sentence was read the same way regardless of content. I eventually got used to it, but the delivery could have been much more engaging.

Personal and important

As a recently diagnosed adult, this book felt surreal and deeply personal. It’s an odd feeling to open a book that seems as if it was written about or for you. I bought the hard copy and made notes in it while I listened to the audiobook.

It was overwhelming at points, but not in a bad way. It’s hard to articulate, but I could relate so much to certain topics that it was affecting and I needed time to step back and take it in. So, I listened for a bit. Then took sometimes weeks away, and then listened a bit more. I needed to think and process and talk through parts of it before I could hear more. Now, I plan to start over.

Though surprising to me, the diagnosis and education have ultimately been very comforting and make so many things make sense. I am grateful for the book. It has been what I needed at the time I needed it.

There are bound to be parts of such a detailed history that will be dry for some readers, but overall, I thought this was an informative, interesting, and enjoyable biography.
