End of the … nonology? Beautiful book
Revisado: 12-29-24
Appropriately epic climax to the epic nine-novel (and assorted novelettes) series. Very satisfying for me, although not as completely so until the second time I listened through. Even the first time, it was fun but exasperating, because it turned so much on its head. But it did so very well and enjoyably, especially when I could just go with it and not feel bad for the characters and their situation.

Historia
The inside look at how the battle of the space billionaires began and why it matters, Escaping Gravity is former NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver’s firsthand account of how a handful of revolutionaries outmaneuvered the system of political patronage and bureaucracy that threatened the space agency. The success of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin, Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic, and countless other commercial space efforts were preceded by decades of work by a group of people Garver calls “space pirates.”

Behind the curtain
Revisado: 08-13-22
Ms. Garver’s book pulled me into the offices and personnel of NASA as I have never encountered. The best and the worst of human behavior comes out in these pages, and it was quite illuminating.
The honest appraisal of her time at NASA includes her own accomplishments, and her own perceived failures, and is a moving portrayal of her time as second in command during a critical time in the history of NASA.
This book will appeal to anyone that likes a good non-fiction book, no space knowledge needed going in. However, for nerds like me who love space, I feel it is eye-opening and inspiring.
Lori Garver is a hero.

Historia
Lovelace was once merely a ship’s artificial intelligence. When she wakes up in a new body, following a total system shutdown and reboot, she has no memory of what came before. As Lovelace learns to negotiate the universe and discover who she is, she makes friends with Pepper, an excitable engineer, who’s determined to help her learn and grow. Together, Pepper and Lovey will discover that no matter how vast space is, two people can fill it together.

A Sequel that moves beyond
Revisado: 09-10-21
Wayfarers 2
This sequel focuses on two minor characters from the first book in this series, The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, and this made me wonder if I’d like it.
I loved it. The book explores identity, community, isolation and sense of being through the struggles of the characters to understand their sense of self worth and identity in ways I felt hit so close to home. And without clubbing the reader over the head with clumsy explanations, instead just telling the story and letting one discover what is happening.
I don’t want to say more and reveal anything, because I was so pleased while hearing the book and discovering them for myself.
Excellent and appropriate reading by Ms. Dulude, who reads the other books in the series.
If you need a break from sci-fi that covers intergalactic wars, espionage and planet-shattering weapons, give these books a try. There is still fun technology, aliens and aliens culture, AIs with personality and self-awareness, and yes: danger and problems. But these stories are really about people and how they get along (or don’t). Wonderful stuff!
