Historia
According to the FBI, I was considered a serial murderer after three kills. What do they call me after fifty-two? They call me the Silencer. One final bullet would have been all it took to stop me from taking another soul, and I would have been doing Meridian City a service by pulling that trigger. An angel crying for help stopped me, and that night, I took three lives for her. Then three turned into eight. Then eight turned into twenty. Twenty turned into twenty-one. Twenty-one turned into twenty-three.

Revisado: 05-07-25
An ending I did not anticipate and left me a bit breathless! I have no words. This book really held my attention, and it was a struggle with the levels of darkness I had not experienced before, but was intrigued by. However, I just finished listening and I feel empty. An impactful story to say the least. I highly recommend, but hold on for dear life.

Couldn’t get into it
Revisado: 12-15-24
I just could not get through this book. I have read some of her other stories, and really enjoyed them. This was overly dramatic, I thought enough already with I can’t stop looking at her eyes and I’m about to die if I don’t have her kind of stuff. It just seemed amateurish and juvenile. I usually like the narrators, but perhaps it was Just the lines they were given to read, that after a while I couldn’t stop rolling my eyes and decided to just call it quits. Which I never do. I didn’t care about the individuals, what they were doing, was getting bored by the inner dialogue that was just reminiscent of a very cheesy Harlequin romance novel.

Historia
Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties—successful, competent, and apparently unassailable. But in the wake of their father’s death, he’s medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women—his enduring first love, Sylvia, and Naomi, a college student for whom life is one long joke. Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother. Now, in the early weeks of his bereavement, Ivan meets Margaret.

Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Interesting Story but…
Revisado: 07-13-24
I thought it was a very interesting and well written story, but I could not get past the author being the narrator. I really wish those who write didn’t also read them because they’re not very good at it. I almost stopped listening as he attempted to do a Scottish accent. It was painful and continued to be throughout the book. I almost stopped several times because of it. For the most part, it was well done, but still. Leave the narration to those who are good at it.

Beckett: If you’re reading this, well, you know the last-letter drill. You made it. I didn’t. Get off the guilt train, because I know if there was any chance you could have saved me, you would have. I need one thing from you: get out of the army and get to Telluride. My little sister Ella’s raising the twins alone. She’s too independent and won’t accept help easily, but she has lost our grandmother, our parents, and now me. It’s too much for anyone to endure. And here’s the kicker: there’s something else you don’t know that’s tearing her family apart.

I had a hard time…
Revisado: 09-04-23
I had a hard time liking the main character, Elsie. While many have known the excruciating pain of loss, bad behavior and treating people horribly is not excused. Having the character act as if she’s the only one that’s ever known loss, it was hard to feel sorry for her. I rarely review something, but while I usually love this author, this is a story I could’ve skipped. I can’t believe how much I disliked the main character lol. I almost stopped listening several times because I couldn’t take her Pathetic, selfish, mean, spiteful, nobody’s ever known pain like I have, nobody’s ever known love like mine, self absorbed attitude. Ugh.

I thought it was good, but…
Revisado: 05-16-23
I thought it was good, but I had a hard time with the main character’s attitude and sense of entitlement. I am really a fan of World War II historical fiction, but the one thing that seems to prevail in most stories is a level of humility and graciousness. Sometimes it was difficult to feel badly for the main character because of the lack thereof. Otherwise, it was a good story.
