Where is the editor?!
Revisado: 02-02-25
Such odd pronunciation of certain words. The narrator ms. Zanzarella is generally very good. So when a focus of the story is an ANTENNA array, she calls it an “antenny” over and over. Singular! Now, I know an acceptable pronunciation of the plural might be close to this, but antenny for the angular is like “ol’ timey music.” Likewise “schematic”. The e should be a short I or e, but she says scheematic, a long e. Distracting.

Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Sloppy writing/Poor narration.
Revisado: 12-31-24
1. Author Louise Penny’s intro to the audiobook welcomes the new narrator without any explanation. I’m guessing a contract dispute. Only on Amazon did she thank the previous narrator. He was great. His French accent was pretty good and if he made the occasional mistake, the editor should have caught it. (Lord knows other series have botched the pronunciation of even the main character’s name when changing narrators!!! Think Jo nesbo’s Harry Hole, Angie Sage’s Septimus Heap series, )
2. Completely irrational jumps to conclusions based on one scrap of evidence.
3. Unresearched areas where flaws are elementary. Google it for heavens sake. One example is a satellite phone whose “line was down?!?!” Another was the 1940’s movie-like breathless flight of the single engine plane flight through a thunderstorm. This just does not happen and have people live through it! It certainly wouldn’t change the speed of the engine as if it had been sputtering. Did I say GOOGLE IT?!

Doubly disappointing
Revisado: 10-11-21
Huge fan of Louise Penny and eagerly await her new books, so this was doubly disappointing. It seemed that at least 2/3rds of the book was a heavy-handed diatribe against eugenics (is that a serious concern in Canada?) and the timeline was completely messed up from the beginning with the pandemic safely behind. The “mystery” was over midway through the book and then it became a preachy soapbox for Ms. Penny’s irrational fears over forced euthanasia. What happened to one of the best mystery writers today? Too much TikTok?

The blatant Mercedes product placement was cheap.
Revisado: 04-07-21
Mercedes must have paid for their r350 placement in this novel and the next. He goes out of his way to describe features. So embarrassing. “ I really loved the 45 square feet of storage…”. Worse, this was during the Chrysler years. Patterson was plugging a mostly Chrysler product. I felt used.

Historia
After an overhaul of leadership at the FBI's New York field office, A. X. L. Pendergast is abruptly forced to accept an unthinkable condition of continued employment: the famously rogue agent must now work with a partner. Pendergast and his new teammate, junior agent Coldmoon, are assigned to Miami Beach, where a rash of killings by a bloodthirsty psychopath are distinguished by a confounding M.O.: cutting out the hearts of his victims and leaving them - along with cryptic handwritten letters - at local gravestones, unconnected save in one bizarre way.

Are there copy editors anymore?
Revisado: 07-29-20
“5k flat screen TVs” should be 4K. No such thing as 5k.
A few obvious embarrassing mispronouncing. I mean, they credit a director/editor, so they failed in their 1 job. There are more. (I spend more than $1,000 per year on audible books. So I think I have bone fides. )

Historia
In the 25th century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person's consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or "sleeve") making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen.

Todd has a great voice and style. But I found his mispronunciations jarring. Where was the editor?!?! Every few minutes. ‘Termite grenades’ (thermite) made me laugh. The rest were annoying.

Historia
After a student choir’s practice session at a Helsinki villa turns deadly, Detective Maria Kallio finds herself in the middle of the action - and her first murder case. Someone in the group wanted playboy Tommi Peltonen dead, but that’s one song these suspects refuse to sing. Behind the choir’s jovial facade lies bitter passion, and the victim’s seemingly perfect life hid a host of sins that made him a target of almost everyone in the villa. As a young female - and a redhead to boot - Maria knows that solving this case will help her overcome her perceived shortcoming in the eyes of her colleagues.
