Ah the good old days when men were allowed to abuse their wives and children and others with impunity!

This is nothing more than a classic case of a child being sexually abused who then goes on through life to be unnaturally obsessed with sex. I have no problem with consensual sex between adults, even if it is obsessive, and if that’s what Scotty wanted to do with his life— fine. But the constant praising of his wife’s enabling him to philander with everyone he came across is nothing short of disgusting. “She never asked where I was or what I was doing, she even took phone messages from the people I was having sex with!” Because a woman’s ultimate value is to be so self sacrificing that a man can abuse her and she will let him. That’s the best woman in Scotty’s estimation. What a complete piece of human garbage. And all the while he exonerates himself by claiming he just liked to make people happy, and golly gee—what could possibly be wrong with that? ‘If you question my behavior you’re a bigot!’ Hey Scotty— what about making your wife and daughter happy? For some reason it’s incumbent upon you to make all the celebrities “happy” but your wife can suffer? Talk about the rationalization of the century. Scotty, no amount of famous person liaisons can save you from having abused your wife by treating her the way you did. You should have never been married nor had children.

I’m afraid the titillation of Hollywood gossip lost its interest against the backdrop of abuse and the story became too difficult to stomach. Is any of it true? Who the hell cares.

What little value this book does have is to help prove the truth that vices of all sorts have always existed, the only difference is that back then people could abuse others freely and victims had no choice but to accept their lot in life. Suddenly the good old days don’t look so good.

Fascinating story of heartbreaking radiation poisoning and corporate corruption. Highly recommended. Paints a vivid and shocking picture of how some can shamelessly act as though not all human life matters. A lesson to all of us to check ourselves.

My only complaint is a small one about name pronunciation. The reader can’t pronounce the surname Donohue correctly and it proves very distracting. Not enough to pass on the book, but hopefully in the future that can be fixed.

It’s hard not feeling like a jerk giving this book a bad review, so let me be clear: I’m not reviewing Brian Wilson (who is amazing and I could see myself being friends with), nor am I reviewing mental illness (which I take very seriously and never wish to stigmatize) I’m only reviewing the book.

It is a bit of a mess. It jumps all over the place and reads a bit like a child wrote it: “this happened and then that happened” etc. it really showcases how difficult it is to turn even a very interesting story into a great book. It makes me appreciate author Laura Hillenbrand and others like her so much more.

I found myself forcing myself to finish it like it was a chore. Such a shame.

I loved this book-- it is heart wrenching and painful, but so human and beautiful.

My only complaint is the performance-- the reader's attempt at an American accent is ghastly and distracting. Luckily it is only a small part of the book, and shouldn't dissuade anyone from listening to it.
