Weaving myths and psychedelics
Revisado: 10-16-24
Well done book weaving myths and psychedelics into a digestible story. It gave me a lot to think about. Many of the myths were familiar, however many were not. The book hit home for me on several levels.

Historia
One of the most influential works of this century, The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays is a crucial exposition of existentialist thought. Influenced by works such as Don Juan and the novels of Kafka, these essays begin with a meditation on suicide; the question of living or not living in a universe devoid of order or meaning.

Absurdly good
Revisado: 09-06-24
Albert Camus’ *The Myth of Sisyphus* explores the concept of existentialism and the absurd, focusing on how humans confront the meaninglessness of life. Here are the key takeaways:
1. **The Absurdity of Life**: Camus argues that life is inherently meaningless, and humans naturally seek meaning where none exists. This "absurd condition" arises from the conflict between our desire for meaning and the indifferent, chaotic universe.
2. **Revolt Against the Absurd**: Camus suggests that the proper response to the absurd is not despair or suicide but rebellion. By accepting life’s lack of inherent meaning and continuing to live fully and passionately, one can find personal freedom and empowerment.
3. **Sisyphus as a Metaphor**: The myth of Sisyphus, who is condemned to roll a boulder up a hill only for it to roll back down each time, represents the human condition. Camus sees Sisyphus as the ultimate symbol of the absurd hero—embracing his futile task and finding meaning in the struggle itself.
4. **Living Without Hope for Transcendence**: Camus rejects the idea of hoping for some ultimate meaning (whether religious or philosophical) beyond this life. Instead, he advocates for living in the present and appreciating life's experiences, however fleeting or repetitive they may be.
5. **Happiness in the Struggle**: Even though the struggle against the absurd seems endless, Camus asserts that individuals can find joy in embracing it. He famously concludes that “one must imagine Sisyphus happy,” as acceptance of the absurd leads to a new type of freedom.
Ultimately, *The Myth of Sisyphus* challenges readers to confront the harsh truths of existence while still finding value and meaning through personal experiences and resilience.

Historia
Man’s Search for Meaning is the chilling yet inspirational story of Viktor Frankl’s struggle to hold on to hope during the unspeakable horrors of his years as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

Excellent
Revisado: 09-24-23
Book is divided into 2 parts.
Part 1: Authors personal experience in concentration camps and psychological phases that he notes of those forced to be there.
Part 2:
His therapeutic model: Logertherapy - rooted in finding meaning in situations, life and suffering.
Book found me as I sit with species shame as to how or why we humans inflict such atrocities to fellow humans. Powerful.

Solid guide to self mastery
Revisado: 09-21-22
Dr. O does a great job in this short and practical guide walking readers/listeners through a method of self mastery he developed along his own journey towards becoming the man he wanted to be. The book is filled with a lot of research oriented/ tried and true practices + innovative ideas stemming from his unique life and career evolution which when combined add up to a powerful tool box that if applied - can be transformative. He weaves together his personal story in a way that is relatable and engaging but not as over the top as some books where the content can feel more like a biography of the author than a practical guide. I listened once through to feel the full landscape but plan to listen again in chunks in order to do the exercises at the end of each chapter- which felt to me really critical to apply the highest value of the material. The target audience is men and reframing what healthy masculinity looks like but the wisdom within could be applied to all gender identities. A supplementary PDF with the exercises would be great but it’s easy enough to write down the prompts in case that doesn’t become available at some point.

Here are the great minds of Western civilization and their pivotal ideas, from Plato to Hegel, from Augustine to Nietzsche, from Copernicus to Freud. Richard Tarnas performs the near-miracle of describing profound philosophical concepts simply but without simplifying them. Ten years in the making and already hailed as a classic, The Passion of the Western Mind is truly a complete liberal education in a single volume.

Happy for audio version
Revisado: 03-08-22
Fantastic book packed full of history and insights on how western thought came together and evolved. Often dense, sometimes requiring re-listening to parts where prior knowledge was limited on my part. Extremely helpful to have the audio version. I have tried to make it through the written version a few times but due to the denseness of material and focus required to really take it all in, I had not finished it. Being able to do something tactile like walking and listening made for a much more pleasant experience.

In When the Body Says No, physician and writer Gabor Maté explores the mind-body link and the connection between stress and disease. Can a person literally die of loneliness? Is there a relationship between the ability to express emotions and Alzheimer’s disease? Is there such a thing as a “cancer personality”? Drawing on scientific research and years of experience as a practicing physician, Maté provides answers to these and other important questions.

Really profound
Revisado: 06-20-21
This book was really profound and important to understand how our emotional repression and stress make us sick. Great tools on how to stop doing that. There is a problem with the audio book specifically that at the end of several of the chapters rather than ending, it repeats content from earlier in the chapter, but it’s pretty easy to figure out when that happens and skip that part so not a big deal.

Historia
Charles Eisenstein explores the history and potential future of civilization, tracing the converging crises of our age to the illusion of the separate self. He argues that our disconnection from one another and the natural world has mislaid the foundations of science, religion, money, technology, economics, medicine, and education as we know them. It has fired our near-pathological pursuit of technological Utopias even as we push ourselves and our planet to the brink of collapse.

This book takes a very unique look under the hood of our president and his family history. The reader can draw their own conclusions. The author does seem to harbor certain resentments for her uncle but overall her assessment seems pretty one point, all the same.
