I’m having a really hard time expressing how shocked and disappointed I am in this book and in Dr. Nina Savelle-Rocklin.

I found Dr. Nina on the A Sharper Life podcast with Nicki Sharp. I thought Dr. Nina was intelligent, sensitive, and really tuned into the world of people struggling with disordered eating &/or eating disorders. The interview as a stand-alone is great and I learned so much from both the host and Dr. Nina. In fact, I enjoyed it enough to go the extra mile and purchased Dr. Nina’s audiobook THE BINGE CURE that same afternoon.

I began listening and noticed that she was really focused on her readers/listeners losing weight, but at first she didn’t mention why she wanted us to lose weight… she didn’t cite health reasons at all… she simply assumed it was the goal of everyone in her audience - not to stop binging - but to lose weight.

I thought this odd, but I stuck with the book and only had to get to Chapter 6 to find out how Dr. Nina really feels about people with binge eating disorders. She’d say that your motivation for weight loss may be that “you want to wear a bathing suit in public” and that you’d want to “look at photos of yourself without wincing.” She refers to these examples as “logical reasons” for losing weight.

I was floored! I can’t think of many more illogical reasons to lose weight. For a doctor who preaches that her patients should explore the true reasons for their unhappiness, this is incredibly superficial. It doesn’t take a genius to realize that it’s Dr. Nina who thinks fat people shouldn’t wear bathing suits in public and that she winces when she looks at fat people. But wait - it gets so much worse.

She then begins throwing around quotes from Steve Jobs, Michael Jordan, and Thomas Edison regarding failure and relates them to readers/listeners who have failed to lose weigt (yes, she uses the word “fail”)… just what folks with an ED need to hear: that it’s not diet/health industry’s responsibility for promoting “diets” with false claims - it’s our “failure to lose weight” - Really Dr. Nina. You should be ashamed of yourself.

The text is reckless and Dr. Nina shows a complete disregard for her audience’s wellbeing. At the very least, Dr. Nina should have done a little research into the current climate as it pertains to fat-shaming and then maybe chosen her phrasing so that it doesn’t appear that she’s repulsed by people who are not at her idea of a “goal weight.”

That being said, Dr. Nina is incredibly smart and there are some wonderful ideas woven into this book. However, so much of her text displays questionable judgment on her part and really shows how out-of-touch she is with her audience. If still decide to read this book, please read with caution or with your therapist.

I was so disappointed in this book. I was really enjoying her writing style and appreciative of the amount of work that was put into it. However, she lost me as soon as she started referring to obesity as a cause health risks. Which is widely known as inaccurate. She said this as a blanket statement with no caveats.

I feel like if she hasn't done the research on that...then what other parts of her book were not researched. I simply can't trust any of the information here.

I downloaded this on a whim and what a great find!

At first I was distracted by the sound effects in the production, but I got used to them quickly and the acting was so good that it all fell into place. I could hear the smiles on their faces and totally envision their descriptions of … everything!

Recommended!
(Now how do I get more books like this?)

The story was very predictable, but it kept me listing, so I it was well-written and maybe I've just read/listened too many serial killer novels. The reader, however, was harder to take. The protagonist's "voice" was read so slowly, it sounded like she was always drunk whereas other characters, were spoken at a normal speed, so I could not adjust the overall speed to fix the issue. Additionally, the reader's attempt at depicting horror by making the characters "whisper" was so softly spoken, I found myself frequently looking at my phone to see if the app closed or I received a text - trying to figure out where the volume went. I was constantly jumping back to see if I missed crucial dialog (9 times out of 19, it was a breathy "Oh God.").

I purchased this title because of an Audible promotion - I will not participate in one again based on the poor quality of this book's production.
