Historia
Spring Snow is set in Tokyo in 1912, when the hermetic world of the ancient aristocracy is being breached for the first time by outsiders -- rich provincial families unburdened by tradition, whose money and vitality make them formidable contenders for social and political power. Among this rising new elite are the ambitious Matsugae, whose son has been raised in a family of the waning aristocracy, the elegant and attenuated Ayakura.

Terrible reader
Revisado: 04-17-19
I've listened to a lot of audiobooks over the years, and I have to say that the guy who reads this one is one of the worst readers I've ever heard. He reads in a total monotone -- like a machine -- with no hint that he understands the words he is reading. I had to stop listening -- not because I didn't like the story, but because I couldn't stand listening to this guy any longer.

Historia
This ambitious, electrifying work traces the harrowing journey of the famed Sarajevo Haggadah, a beautifully illuminated Hebrew manuscript created in 15th-century Spain. When it falls to Hanna Heath, an Australian rare-book expert, to conserve this priceless work, the series of tiny artifacts she discovers in its ancient binding—an insect wing fragment, wine stains, salt crystals, a white hair—only begin to unlock its deep mysteries.

Great story, not a great narrator
Revisado: 05-16-18
This is a wonderful book -- well-written and a real page-turner. But I thought that the narrator was weak. She tried to do a variety of accents for the characters, who represented a number of different nationalities. The main character's Australian accent was okay, but the rest all sounded like The Count on Sesame Street no matter where they were from . Dreadful. A straight reading with NO attempt at accents would have been so much less distracting.

What's with the British accents?
Revisado: 05-16-18
The narrator portrays all of the Italian characters in a variety of British accents. To me, this totally ruins the Italian flavor of the book. The story is dark and nasty. Aurelio Zen is not a nice guy.

This book is a real departure from "Visit from the Goon Squad". A much more conventional story. It's written well. But it wasn't a story I cared about deeply.

Horrible narrator
Revisado: 10-24-17
The woman who narrates this book sounds like she is reading the BBC news. Everything is at the same intensity. You hear the words, but not the sense of the story. There is no pacing.

Historia
Six months after Rupert Falkes dies, leaving a grieving widow and five adult sons, an unknown woman sues his estate, claiming she had two sons by him. The Falkes brothers are pitched into turmoil, at once missing their father and feeling betrayed by him. In disconcerting contrast, their mother, Eleanor, is cool and calm, showing preternatural composure. Eleanor and Rupert had made an admirable life together - Eleanor with her sly wit and generosity, Rupert with his ambition and English charm.

Historia
When John Snare, a 19th-century provincial bookseller, traveled to a liquidation auction, he stumbled on a vivid portrait of King Charles I that defied any explanation. The Charles of the painting was young - too young to be king - and yet also too young to be painted by the Flemish painter to which the work was attributed. Snare had found something incredible - but what? His research brought him to Diego Velázquez, whose long-lost portrait of Prince Charles has eluded art experts for generations.

Boring!
Revisado: 05-11-17
What was most disappointing about Laura Cumming’s story?
Way too much irrelevant detail. The book dragged. Sounded more like a thesis than an engaging story.

Historia
From the best-selling author of Atonement, Nutshell is a classic story of murder and deceit, told by a narrator with a perspective and voice unlike any in recent literature. A bravura performance, it is the finest recent work from a true master. To be bound in a nutshell, see the world in two inches of ivory, in a grain of sand. Why not, when all of literature, all of art, of human endeavour is just a speck in the universe of possible things?

Entertaining!
Revisado: 01-18-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would definitely recommend this book! It's a fairly mundane plot, but it's told from such a unique point of view that it's delightfully entertaining. This conceit could be hard to pull off, but McEwan handles it brilliantly. And Rory Kinnear does a wonderful job of bringing this narrator to life. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and I was really sad when it came to an end.
What other book might you compare Nutshell to and why?
It's one of a kind!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, it was easy to set aside and then come back to.

Historia
Lucy Barton is recovering slowly from what should have been a simple operation. Her mother, to whom she hasn’t spoken for many years, comes to see her. Gentle gossip about people from Lucy’s childhood in Amgash, Illinois, seems to reconnect them, but just below the surface lie the tension and longing that have informed every aspect of Lucy’s life: her escape from her troubled family, her desire to become a writer, her marriage, her love for her two daughters. Knitting this powerful narrative together is the brilliant storytelling voice of Lucy herself.

Meh!
Revisado: 12-19-16
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
What a disappointment. It seems unfinished. I don't think she spent a lot of time on this novel.
If you’ve listened to books by Elizabeth Strout before, how does this one compare?
"The Burgess Boys" and "Olive Kittredge" are two of my most favorite books. "My name is Lucy Barton" doesn't come close to the quality of those two books.

Beautiful story
Revisado: 10-05-16
I loved this book so much that I listened to it three times. It's a moving story. Though it covers several time periods, it's much easier to follow than some of Erdrich's early novels.
Erdrich does a terrific job with the narration. She makes the characters come alive.
