Historia
When “Renaissance runner” (New York Times) Alexi Pappas - Olympic athlete, actress, filmmaker, and writer - was four years old, her mother died by suicide, drastically altering the course of Pappas’s life and setting her on a search for female role models. When her father signed his bereaved daughter up for sports teams as a way to keep her busy, female athletes became the first women Pappas looked up to, and her Olympic dream was born. At the same time, Pappas had big creative dreams, too: She wanted to make movies, write, and act.

Self indulgent and bad voice speed
Revisado: 02-12-25
The content of the book was forcing inspiration and generally hit me as very self indulgent and an attempt to give more wisdom than she can. Her voice is ok but the speed is so incredibly slow and delivery is painful. Even at 2x speed I didn’t enjoy. I only finished this because a dear friend wanted me to read it to discuss with her. Otherwise I would have stopped a few chapters in and returned it to audible. Would not recommend.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Predictable but still enjoyable
Revisado: 12-01-24
This novel is predictable and a bit cheesy but still beautiful woven work of fiction that I enjoyed watching unfold.

Historia
Maria Bamford is a comedian’s comedian (an outsider among outsiders) and has forever fought to find a place to belong. From struggling with an eating disorder as a child of the 1980s, to navigating a career in the arts (and medical debt and psychiatric institutionalization), she has tried just about every method possible to not only be a part of the world, but to want to be a part of it. In Bamford’s “trademark blend of disarming intimacy and dark whimsy” (Publishers Weekly), Sure, I’ll Join Your Cult brings us on a quest to participate in something.

Historia
How do we make social justice the most pleasurable human experience? How can we awaken within ourselves desires that make it impossible to settle for anything less than a fulfilling life? Author and editor Adrienne Maree Brown finds the answer in something she calls “pleasure activism,” a politics of healing and happiness that explodes the dour myth that changing the world is just another form of work. Drawing on the black feminist tradition, she challenges us to rethink the ground rules of activism.

Buy the book not audiobook
Revisado: 04-04-21
This book is likely eye opening for many people. The audiobook, however, was one of the worst designed audiobooks I’ve read. The book contains snippets, essays, interviews. The audiobook is read by one solo voice regardless of the interview etc. It really ruined the whole thing for me. Harder to follow. Flat affect. I really wanted to like this book but I think that would probably be best served with a physical copy and not audio.

Historia
You may "know" Jenny Slate from her Netflix special, Stage Fright, as the creator of Marcel the Shell, or as the star of Obvious Child. But you don't really know Jenny Slate until you get bonked on the head by her absolutely singular writing style. To see the world through Jenny's eyes is to see it as though for the first time, shimmering with strangeness and possibility.

Historia
At the verge of turning 40, Peter Sagal - brainiac Harvard grad, short, bald Jew with a disposition toward heft, and a sedentary star of public radio - started running seriously. And much to his own surprise, he kept going, faster and further, running 14 marathons and logging tens of thousands of miles on roads, sidewalks, paths, and trails all over the US and the world, including the 2013 Boston Marathon, where he crossed the finish line moments before the bombings.

Have you ever known that you needed to make a change but felt unable to do anything about it? Have you ever felt like you aren't where you are supposed to be and wondered how the people around you managed to find their purpose in life? After realizing that his well-paying, prestigious job was actually making him miserable, Adam "Smiley" Poswolsky started asking these big questions: How do you actually find meaning in the workplace? How do you find work that makes your heart sing?

Love this practical, applied (yet still inspiring) read!
Revisado: 10-13-16
There are a lot of ways to get information about what you should do next-- I would recommend reading this book.
Each chapter is full of practical, applied activities to help you explore who you are, what brings you meaning, and build what you want for your next step. At risk of being boring or formulaic (aka: like many other self help books aimed at this audience), this book remains inspiring and supportive. It brings hope without impulsivity, ubiquitous advice while remaining individualized. It is truly a remarkable book.
In addition, listening to the audiobook provides an additional closeness/support from the book that might be missed in text. As a remarkable speaker, Smiley does not disappoint in his reading of the book. My only advice would be to print off or look at the extra materials on his website as you go along so you can do the activities.
This book started making a difference in my life the minute I ordered it. It is a reminder that you don't always have to get exactly where you're going (or even know where that is) you just have to take a step in the right direction.
Recommending it to oodles and oodles of millenials and beyond!

A great book filled with useful advice for productively making yourself happier. Overall a great read, although the passages she read from blog responders were hard to follow on audiobook. Might be one of those books you want a hard copy of to take notes and return to! Excited to continue taking small steps to be happier!

Great book; OK reader
Revisado: 03-15-16
This is a great book to help you navigate your relationships (open or otherwise). Lots of practical examples and helpful information to think through. The readers voice is a bit challenging to listen through the whole book, but I think that is to maintain clarity and refrain from any judgement inflection. OK on 1.25-2x speed.
