In Nowhere Near First, Cory shares his deeply personal story about experiencing his father’s suicide at a young age, and how this led to a career in endurance running and a desire to live life to the fullest. Nowhere Near First is a humorous, captivating, and uplifting account of Cory’s memorable ultramarathon experiences.

I’d run with him…sorta
Revisado: 01-11-25
Cory’s take on ultrarunning is great. His accomplishments are superb and he’s a great runner bar none. My feedback is that when I first started listening, I thought it was AI reading the book because it was so monotonous and not really any excitement about some of the things he was reading. I told myself to stick it out to see what else he had to say.
Our upbringings and background are very different and I think this is why I would say, I’d run with him, sorta. We have different takes about mapping out runs, being willing to embarrass ourselves with costumes without feeling emasculated.
Overall, I would have had a different experience if I had read the book. Nevertheless, anyone who is an avid reader of running books, this would be a selection. Run on!

Revisado: 07-05-19
First off, sanda needs a head to toe violation for not pronouncing the Spanish words correctly. Didn’t he have enough time to prep with the tone and accent? I had a hard time understanding the Spanish.
Lil loco is definitely a lost soul but does not deserve any forgiveness or leniency for the chaos and trauma he wreaked in Chicago. gangbanging is such a sad story. The story was intriguing with the day to day operations. Crazy wild story!

Historia
Martin Corona, a US citizen, fell into the outlaw life at 12 and worked for a crew run by the Arellano brothers, founders of the Tijuana drug cartel that dominated the Southern California drug trade and much bloody gang warfare for decades. Corona's crew would cross into the United States from their luxurious hideout in Mexico, kill whomever needed to be killed north of the border, and return home in the afternoon. Martin Corona played a key role in the downfall of the cartel when he turned state's evidence.

What a hit
Revisado: 09-20-18
Great book. I’m not into the glorification of cartels or drug dealers but Martin talks about the incidents in his life that made him who he was. This was the transformation of a kid moving through the prison industrial complex to graduate in becoming a hitman.

Much of the story comes from television and magazine interviews. It's a good starting source for anyone interested in learning about what others have written about Eminem and not necessarily Marshall Mathews.

Couldn't Hit Pause
Revisado: 01-08-15
Would you listen to Floating City again? Why?
I would probably listen to Floating City again if there was a connection in future books if Sudhir would write.
Who was your favorite character and why?
New York was my favorite character. I have only been to New York twice after 2010 so I do not know how New York really was before Giuliani became the Mayor. I have heard of Hell's Kitchen but I am assuming it is not what Sudhir experienced back in 2003.
Have you listened to any of Sudhir Venkatesh’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I read his first book years ago and have enjoyed his ethnography since! It feels like I am a fly on the wall while he talks about what he has observed in the communities he has observed.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I did not have any extreme reactions to the book. I did feel bad about Sudhir's personal life.
Any additional comments?
Great book! I finished it in less than a week!!

Ice-T here offers his hip-hop generation’s Horatio Alger story: the narrative of an orphaned child who, drawn inexorably into a harrowing life of crime, ultimately turns away from the streets and, through self-discipline and a single-minded work ethic, forges a path to international fame as a musician and film-and-television star.

Cool as Ice
Revisado: 02-28-13
Is there anything you would change about this book?
the narrator was not that great. He tried to sound like a "gangsta". I would have preferred Ice T narrate it himself.
What other book might you compare Ice to and why?
None that I can think of.
What didn’t you like about Mirron Willis’s performance?
His voice just didn't fit the writing of Ice T.
Could you see Ice being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Not really. I don't think it would be worth watching.
Any additional comments?
I like to listen to the music and/or videos that has been mentioned to enhance the overall theme of the book.

Historia
With his goofy smile, sleepy eyes, and stoner's laugh, Jim Breuer might not appear to be the most introspective comedian out there. The fact that Jim Breuer made his mark playing Goat Boy on Saturday Night Live and a recalcitrant toker in the stoner classic Half Baked doesn't help his reputation at all. But in I'm Not High, we meet a whole new Jim Breuer.

Flying in Breuerniverse
Revisado: 02-05-13
What did you love best about I'm Not High?
Breuer crushes it (a word he uses a lot)!!!! I enjoyed listening to Jim act out the voices of people in the book. Listening to him narrate was like having him in the passenger seat of my car during the long commute. He fiddles with aspect of enlightenment/chance of certain instances in his life that made him think about the beyond the supreme being.
Would you be willing to try another book from Jim Breuer? Why or why not?
As a comedian his voice is great and would definitely try another book from jimmy breuer.
Have you listened to any of Jim Breuer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Whenever I listen to a biography or memoir, I supplement other videos, music to put into perspective what the author or person went through at that moment. However, Breuer being a comedian that he is, used some of the material in the book in previous comedy clubs.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I tried saving the book for my commutes but had to force myself to stop listening at home because then I wouldn't have anything to listen to in the car.

An incredible but true account of achieving one of the most awe-inspiring midlife physical transformations ever. In October 2006, the night before he was to turn 40, Rich experienced a chilling glimpse of his future. Nearly 50 pounds overweight and unable to climb the stairs without stopping, he saw where his sedentary lifestyle was taking him. Most of us look the other way when granted such a moment of clarity, but not Rich.

If you could sum up Finding Ultra in three words, what would they be?
pretty darn impressive
What did you like best about this story?
overcoming alcoholism and becoming a vegan ultraman.
What does Rich Roll bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
i listen to books on my 45 minute commute.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
it can be too much to listen to his life story in one sitting. i had to go run after hearing him talk about exercising.
Any additional comments?

As lead singer and songwriter for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anthony Kiedis has lived life on the razor's edge. Much has been written about him, but until now we've only had his songs as clues to his experience from the inside. In Scar Tissue, Kiedis proves himself to be as compelling a memoirist as he is a lyricist, giving us a searingly honest account of the life from which his music has evolved.

this was an awesome audiobook that gave an insight to the world that we know of RHCP!!! I felt like part of the band and the imagery was phenomenal. I can visualize the scene where Kiedis is strung out at a cheap hotel and sees a family car filled with RHCP fans....I created a cd of songs that Kiedis mentioned and listened to them.

Latino literature at its best!
Revisado: 03-15-11
the collection of short stories can be viewed as an overall story of the narrator in different time periods OR short stories that intertwine with each other in a context of living in a Dominican community. Junot's use of not translating or even italicizing the Spanish words is referenced in the beginning quote from Gustavo Perez Firmat. If you are monolingual and are interested in the US Latino experience, Diaz poignantly gives you an East Coast view. Be sure to have google translator handy if you want to get a better understanding of the Spanish words used in the stories. This is what makes Latino literature unique!!!!
