Historia
When Pope Pius XII died in 1958, his papers were sealed in the Vatican Secret Archives, leaving unanswered questions about what he knew and did during World War II. Those questions have only grown and festered, making Pius XII one of the most controversial popes in Church history, especially now as the Vatican prepares to canonize him.

At the end of The Godfather PT 1, during the baptism, the priest asks Michael, "Do you reject Satan," Michael "I do." Pius XII was the Vicar of the Church, the Rock, Petra, a beacon for the weak, and he did nothing. I was hoping to find clear evidence that he opposed evil. I didn't find Christ within him.
His silence condemns him and those who say, he did righteousness in secret, well that doesn't hold water in my opinion. It was a burning building and he kept silent.
He knew about the camps, he knew. I am surprised he didn't end up like Mussolini.

Historia
Stretching across 500 miles of northern Spain, the Camino de Santiago has been a pilgrimage route for centuries. Setting off as a competitive, shrewd negotiator with little patience for small talk, Victor Prince emerged as a very different person - more balanced, more caring, more present in the moment, but looking to the future. Prince translates this growth experience into seven leadership skills, each linked to values that have guided Camino travelers for centuries.

I liked Victor's Camino experience and insights. Also, the narration was well done, by Rudy Sanda. Listening to another Pilgrim talk about the history, and culture of Spain, the spiritual and limits of our bodies. I definitely enjoyed his reflections and thoughts on his Camino.

More than 40 years after it ended, the Vietnam War continues to haunt our country. We still argue over why we were there, whether we could have won, and who was right and wrong in their response to the conflict. When the war divided the country, it created deep political fault lines that continue to divide us today. Now, continuing in the tradition of their critically acclaimed collaborations, the authors draw on dozens and dozens of interviews in America and Vietnam to give us the perspectives of people involved at all levels of the war.

One of the biggest scars in American History that has tainted our Country even before the war ended. A very detailed history of the five administrations and a foreign policy that never had a chance of winning. The millions of Vietnamese killed, the 56 thousand US killed and the after effects that both men and women have lived with since the war.

Historia
Leonardo da Vinci created the two most famous paintings in history, The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. But in his own mind, he was just as much a man of science and engineering. With a passion that sometimes became obsessive, he pursued innovative studies of anatomy, fossils, birds, the heart, flying machines, botany, geology, and weaponry.

Historia
Richard J. Evans's gripping narrative ranges across a century of social and national conflicts, from the revolutions of 1830 and 1848 to the unification of both Germany and Italy, from the Russo-Turkish wars to the Balkan upheavals that brought this era of relative peace and growing prosperity to an end. The first single-volume history of the century, this comprehensive and sweeping account gives the listener a magnificently human picture of Europe in the age when it dominated the rest of the globe.

A Hundred Years of Europe
Revisado: 02-26-18
What made the experience of listening to The Pursuit of Power the most enjoyable?
I enjoyed the reading by Napoleon Ryan and the rich in-depth history of Europe's lust of world hegemon.
What did you like best about this story?
The book covers all aspects of Europe from revolutions to the trends of fashion, the atrocities of colonization in Africa and Australia, up to the threshold of WW 1. Books like this make me want to listen again to certain chapters and buy the hard copy for the footnotes.
Which character – as performed by Napoleon Ryan – was your favorite?
All of the characters were great.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes and I actually listened to 30 hours this weekend.
Any additional comments?
Well worth the money. Superb Research!

The Hidden Truth of the Hurtgen Campaign
Revisado: 12-07-17
What made the experience of listening to A Dark and Bloody Ground: The Hurtgen Forest and the Roer River Dams, 1944-1945 the most enjoyable?
A few weeks ago I visited the area and found a museum on the battle. Until last year, I never heard of this battle. On my trip during Thanksgiving, I met many Americans that never heard of this battle. Only locals and a host at the Netherlands US Military Cemetery knew of the true history.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The character that brought this book to life was not in the book. Last year a friend wanted me to research and find a lost Uncle who died in WW 2. I found Private Ralph Mora at the Ardennes US Military Cemetery, Lot A, Row 33, grave 16 along with 5000 of his brothers. Ralph signed up at Fort Logan, Colorado in March 1944 and died 30 November 44 at Groshau, Germany. He was 20 years old.
Which scene was your favorite?
Hurtgen should have never happened. One of the saddest battles in all of American History. The US has done a great disservice to the men who died there, by sweeping it under the rug of history and forgetting them.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes and no. It's a painful book that exposed how command killed many great kids.
Any additional comments?
I hope the battle is resurrected and that our military and country learns from failure.

Eastern Europe has long been thought of as the "Other Europe", a region rife with political upheaval, shifting national borders, an astonishing variety of ethnic diversity, and relative isolation from the centers of power in the West. It has also been, and continues to be, pivotal in the course of world events. A History of Eastern Europe offers a sweeping 1,000-year tour with a particular focus on the region's modern history.

Eastern Europe, the Other Europe
Revisado: 03-13-17
Would you listen to A History of Eastern Europe again? Why?
Between Western Europe and Russia is the region of Eastern Europe. The other two regions get so much attention, but it's eastern Europe that had a lot to do in making those countries. I enjoyed listening to this interesting part of History and yes I would listen again.
What other book might you compare A History of Eastern Europe to and why?
There are two books on Russian History that I had for classes, but I can't remember.
Have you listened to any of Professor Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius, PhD’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Nope, but I would be interested to hear other books by Dr Liulevicius.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I loved it!

Historia
From the end of World War II until 1980, virtually no American soldiers were killed in action while serving in the Greater Middle East. Since 1990, virtually no American soldiers have been killed in action anywhere else. What caused this shift? Andrew J. Bacevich, one of the country's most respected voices on foreign affairs, offers an incisive critical history of this ongoing military enterprise - now more than 30 years old and with no end in sight.

America on the wrong side of history?
Revisado: 03-13-17
What did you love best about America's War for the Greater Middle East?
I agree with the thesis, that the US foreign policy has brought about the wars on terrorism.
What was one of the most memorable moments of America's War for the Greater Middle East?
The 1980's is the pivotal decade of US Power that contributed to 911.
What about Rob Shapiro and Andrew J. Bacevich ’s performance did you like?
Very Good.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Cry, knowing the US is not on the right track.
Any additional comments?
I hope with the new discoveries of US oil reserves, that the Middle East becomes a lesser importance, I fear that it won't.

An instant hit in the UK, this is the true account of a German shepherd who was adopted by the Royal Air Force during World War II, joined in flight missions, and survived everything from crash-landings to parachute bailouts-ultimately saving the life of his owner and dearest friend. In the winter of 1939 in the cold snow of no-man's-land, two loners met and began an extraordinary journey that would turn them into lifelong friends.

Two heroes
Revisado: 03-12-17
Would you listen to The Dog Who Could Fly again? Why?
I would absolutely listen again. I found similarities between his story and mine, not the hero part, but the companionship between the two.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Dog Who Could Fly?
I think when Robert tries to separate his friendship and the outcome is painful, but has the outcome both needed to survive.
Have you listened to any of Derek Perkins’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Absolutely!
Any additional comments?
Though it's a war story, it's also a friendship of two beings that become one family.
