Historia
Princess Jayne Frost and Prince Consort Sinclair Crowe have been called back to Nocturne Falls for Christmas so that Jayne can help out at the short-staffed Santa’s Workshop. Being back means seeing some old friends, but also finding new trouble that Jayne just can’t stop thinking about. Are the random break-ins really someone trying to ruin Christmas? Because as Santa Claus’s niece, that feels personal to her.

didn't disappoint
Revisado: 11-18-22
When you get this deep into a series it's having a disappointment that is the main concern. This had the same level of emotion, snark, and action that keeps me coming back to this series. The level of 80s tv show comments was a big plus, but I think I'mabout the age Jason's dad. Less monster action but the politics made up for it action wise. And that's the way it should be, we need to work up to another big, bad intelligent opponent again, as even big animal monsters can only be done so many times before it's repetitive. overall, this ia a good story, and as a warning, it's an almost restart of the story, complete divergence from what came before. So if you're a fan of the secondary characters, your going to be disappointed. But you might find a new fav.

Historia
For thousands of years, there has been a cycle: a Demon King rises and conquers, and a Hero is reborn a hundred years later to defeat him. Each time, civilizations are ground to dust beneath the Demon King's hordes, but humanity has remained secure in the belief that a Hero of legend will always save them. There's just one slight problem. It's only been 23 years since the Demon King's latest rise, and this time, he's already conquered more than half the world. If humanity simply waits for the Hero's return, there may be no world left for him to save.

Be Warned
Revisado: 01-07-20
Last in a series and a change in the voice actor!? It's a bad transition, the new actor didn't review the earlier books, so accents are way off and they can't do a female voice at all. if I didn't want to hear the end so badly I don't think I could take the change after so many books before this with the same actor. Fire the producer, they really messed this up even if outside forces forced a change in actors, some effort for continuity could have been done.
BE WARNED, a long pause between the previous and this book may be good to help the change not be so jarring.

Historia
The chartered Zarathustra Company had it all their way. Their charter was for a Class III uninhabited planet, which Zarathustra was, and it meant they owned the planet lock stock and barrel. They exploited it, developed it and reaped the huge profits from it without interference from the Colonial Government. Then Jack Holloway, a sunstone prospector, appeared on the scene with his family of Fuzzies and the passionate conviction that they were not cute animals but little people.

Classic
Revisado: 09-11-18
I enjoyed the book when I was younger and the Audio performance was really good, multiple voice impressions helping to keep the character dialog distinct. It is a dated scifi book with and I've seen complaints of the descriptions of film technology we've already moved away from, but that really doesn't impact the main driving theme of the story. A warning that it is more hard scifi as it resolves around the question of identifying scientific standards for sapient identification. So more scenes of discussion and court room antics with cute creatures and big bad corporation stunts to keep it entertaining. Really a nice short book to listen too if your into scifi. And if you really want something less dated, there is also a rewrite worth looking at.

If you like radio dramas, otherwise avoid
Revisado: 06-16-17
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The full cast could have read the story as written, the performance totally destroyed this story. I am a big fan of the author, this world, and the lack of any true narration destroyed any way of connecting to this story.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Total and complete disappointment. In one of the big last fights, no description, just a quote that "if you don't stop you'll never get back to your natural form"(background noise and ominous music) Fight over!.... WTF! Read the authors description of the changing form, this gives me nothing of what makes this author and his world great, little about what is happening, and no understanding or connection to the events at all. It wasn't clear what was happening, where it was happening, or how it was happening, you had to work out who it was happening too, so the only thing that was clear was why it was happening from the hour of story before.
What didn’t you like about full cast’s performance?
Rather than reading the story with the full descriptions and internal monologes that define this author, the cast decided to create a radio drama. That one decision ruined this entire story. Only reading the verbal parts and adding sound effects does not replace the parts of the author's work that makes his stories compelling. The main character is written as a deep thinker that DOESN'T TALK MUCH, who in their right mind thinks this guy will make a good story if we only read his actual words. I disagree with every decision after the one to not just read this story aloud. The full cast ruined this completely without question.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I like this author and love this series. This could be a good story, but the way it was butchered for this restyled audio, I'll never really know.
Any additional comments?
Ultimately my recommendation is DO NOT BUY

Historia
1870. A time known as The Great Killing. The vampire clans arose and slaughtered humanity with unprecedented carnage in the northern parts of the world. Millions perished; millions were turned into herd animals. The great industrialized civilizations of the world were left in ruin. A remnant fled south to the safety of the ever present heat which was intolerable to vampires. There, blending with the local peoples, they rebuilt their societies founded on human ingenuity, steam and iron.

Vampire Steampunk, and yet it works
Revisado: 10-10-12
Would you listen to Vampire Empire - The Greyfriar again? Why?
I enjoyed this book, I would listen to it again. The story was interesting and had more than a few twists that kept it interesting.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Everybody likes the heroes, in this case a very nice split of hero and heroine, but I really enjoy the dynamics of the villains. The villains are on the surface easy to predict, but as you get to know them you see they hide emotions and desires that twist them as events unfold. I really enjoyed the conflict of the female villain, as she warred within herself over her desires, training, loyalties, and basic upbringing.
What about James Marsters’s performance did you like?
He was consistently able to give differentiating voices to each character, making it easy to understand who was speaking.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, even though I was forced to stop at points where I wanted to continue, there were other points I did stop because I had to process the impact of the last chapter, or the idea of this dramatic change in society due to different events in the history of the described world (our world with divergent history due to a vampire uprising).
Any additional comments?
I enjoyed this book and look forward to seeing where the author is going with this story. I get the feeling it really can't ever end 'happily ever after' for anyone, and I find that different and exciting.

Revisado: 12-18-11
Would you listen to Sandry's Book again? Why?
This is simple easy read again and again. A young readers book, the way this world is introduced is dynamic and very flavorful.
What did you like best about this story?
The full cast made following this story easy.
Have you listened to any of Tamora Pierce and the Full Cast Family ???s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I read the Alanna quartet as a child and really enjoyed ths new series by the author that deals with more and more dramatic issues as the children inthe series grow up. This was my first full cast story, and it sold me to find outher books performed by them.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Written to be Spoken
Revisado: 06-27-06
The book is written to be spoken, and the reader is excellent, adding the emotions to the first person point of view expertly. This is just a perfect melding of story and media.
The actual story is well done, and gets better with each book. The fantasy of the story is nicely done, and follows one simple idea: take the history of the world and make one change, magic is possible, but only by summoning magic creatures to do it for you. The interplay of reality and the magic creatures is wonderfully done.
Overall, a great listen for anyone, and a real pleasure for fantasy fans.
