Disappointed
Revisado: 10-18-24
I don’t know where to begin - this book was completely different than prior books in the series. The writing was flowery & melodramatic to the point of being ridiculous & annoying. The plot line is poorly developed & pushed to the background while Fiona goes from man to man, allowing chance to determine who

Character development was inconsistent
Revisado: 04-15-24
While I liked the story, Emily’s behaviors were very inconsistent with how she was portrayed in prior books. I really disliked the narrator. It sounded like she was struggling with the accents leading to odd pronunciations of words which was very distracting. Margaret, her American friend, suddenly developed a Brooklyn accent. I really hope they use a different narrator for future books.

A great holdover while awaiting the next book!
Revisado: 02-21-24
This was a nice collection of short stories which allows the reader to fill in some of the gaps in time and find out what some of the main characters were doing while other characters were away on an adventure of their own. It provides insight into each “problem solver” as they use their skills independent of the other characters. It was an enjoyable read & I would recommend it (and have) to my fellow bibliophiles.

Historia
Beatrice, Duchess of Kesgrave, emerges from a wretched night’s sleep to discover him embracing the most beautiful woman she has ever seen. His former mistress! It is shocking, yes, but not so very alarming, for Penelope Taylor is actually there to see Bea. Her dearest friend has been brutally slain, and as Millicent Lloyd happened to be sleeping in the courtesan’s bed at the time, Mrs. Taylor is the only suspect. The magistrate is impatient to cart her off to Newgate and refuses to acknowledge the truth that is glaringly obvious to her: She was the intended victim.

Disappointed
Revisado: 01-21-24
I did not like this book nearly as much as the previous ones, and was disappointed. I pressed on to finish the book, but sadly, it didn’t get any better. I found the premise of Bea spending time with Kesgrave’s former mistress unlikely & demeaning for a character that has always represented a woman ahead of her time in equality. The ending, with every one of the men being disabled, & Bea having to take down the culprit while being assaulted while pregnant distasteful. Since I have enjoyed the series in the past, I will give the author one more chance with the next book, but if it doesn’t return to the prior quality of writing, I will not continue listening to the series.

Historia
Spring, 1890. The long New York winter is over, the buds are blossoming, and romance is in the air. But not all’s right in Gilded-Age Manhattan. Genevieve, a society journalist, and her fiancé, Daniel, are working with photographer Dagmar Hansen on an investigation into the House of Refuge, a children’s workhouse, inspired by Daniel’s near incarceration when he was young. Genevieve is also working on her own piece for the Globe about the Sunflower Mission House, which burned down in a suspicious fire.

Loved this book!
Revisado: 12-09-23
Great storyline. I loved how it illustrated the plight of the poor, the mentally ill & women in this time period. It wasn’t overly predictable like many mysteries I read, I did find the mispronunciations by the narrator distracting.

Loved the further developments in Michaela & Brody’s relationship. While the storyline was good I did find it predictable which somewhat took away from the entertainment value. The narrator is excellent as always.

Disappointing Narration
Revisado: 04-02-23
The narrator was very difficult to listen to & I had to force myself to just get through the book which greatly diminished my enjoyment. As per usual with this author, I found it somewhat difficult to follow the many characters & wish there was a bit more time spent both introducing & developing some of the more peripheral characters. I was glad to see some movement in the relationship with Rosalind & Adam and look forward to seeing where their careers take both of them in future books.
