Vividly honest

The author vividly describes her struggles with addiction, mental illness and medical environments offering few supports and awful obstacles. She skillfully renders the price people pay for toxic work environments that are all too common. The narrator beautifully embodies the author's rage, frustration, confusion and longing. The wonderful authenticity of her reading allows the listener to ride, understand and feel the turbulent ups and downs the author faces and fears.

A Gem!

De Paola beautifully transports the Cinderella tale to a Mexican home and characters. Instead of the glass slipper, we have a lovely rebozo. Instead of the fairy godmother, a warm and faithful housekeeper. The bits of Spanish in the text are quickly translated making them easy to understand (and perhaps learn)? The narrator creates a wonderful spectrum of characters: Sweet Adelita, loving and protective Esperanza and a perfectly wicked Latinx stepmother. This is a delightful listen for adults and children alike.

Noel and Cooper each face tough challenges in life. Moving into their 30s they’ve got the wisdom to recognize and value kindness,support and vulnerability in a potential companion.Their path is far from smooth but loving family and prayer help when obstacles arises.The narrator skillfully conveys their worries,hopes,frustrations and capacity for love.You’ll be rooting for them all the way.

I hated this title. The narrator was rushed, monotone, no feeling. So was the story. Pointless.
The most horrendous description of a rape I've ever heard. My husband wanted to hear it so I suffered through it. I don't know what the Pulitzer people were thinking of.

As other reviewers said, this was not an easy book to listen to. But it was beautifully written, moving, involving. We needed to make it to the end. The narrator was perfect. Unlike some others, I thought her pace was excellent, perfect for the book
