disappointing

I really enjoyed the life in the north books but this spinoff is decidedly weaker. I can not stretch my belief to accept that these weak pacifists tree hugging hippies would survive a day. Why don't they buy guns? They should be buying every gun in the shop. Why are they agonizing over killing these mutated monsters? They should be taking a flame thrower to these wild life preserves.

Weak main character

I couldn't finish this book. the main character is just a collection of insecurities and neuroses. I thought maybe she would improve and grow but there is no sign of any development. and the author keeps referring to the secondary character as "they" and it's not some alien unisexuler species. It's confusing and annoying. it was bound to happen and it's as bad as you would expect.

Best book she has written

This book has more plot development then any book she has ever written. Often I find large sections of her novels that could be removed with out affecting the story. There is a fair amount of time devoted to her and Otto but it doesn't feel like the fluff that bulks up some of her books.
