Historia
By August 1968, the American space program was in danger of failing in its two most important objectives: to land a man on the moon by President Kennedy's end-of-decade deadline and to triumph over the Soviets in space. With its back against the wall, NASA made an almost unimaginable leap: It would scrap its usual methodical approach and risk everything on a sudden launch, sending the first men in history to the moon - in just four months.

I’ve read a number of books written about or by astronauts. Still, Kurson’s account had me riveted. I gained a deeper understanding of the remarkable people who were part of the space program in that period. Well done!

Historia
Behind every great revolution is a vision, and behind perhaps the greatest revolution of our time, personal computing, is the vision of J.C.R. Licklider. In a simultaneously compelling personal narrative and comprehensive historical exposition, Waldrop tells the story of the man who not only instigated the work that led to the internet, but also shifted our understanding of what computers were and could be.

A true visionary
Revisado: 01-11-25
The man-computer symbiosis that JCR Licklider imagined is closer to reality than ever. I am grateful for the pioneers who dreamt and who lived under circumstances that allowed them to realize those dreams. This narrative is highly accessible to non-technical readers and a page turner for me. As a Gen-Xer who was exposed to the MS DOS Logo drawing program and BASIC programming language as a child, learning about the origins of of these curiously warmed my heart and brought me closer to the originators of these ideas.

Practical, implementable tips
Revisado: 12-29-24
I’ve been struggling with my emails for a while. Following the advice in other GTD books hasn’t helped. The Laundry concept is so easy to understand and might just work. I feel more confident about tackling my emails after reading this book. The “when-then” way of “automating” and habit building is also brilliant. I just hope I have enough discipline to implement Laura’s methods. Tech-less Tuesdays are going to be tough. >.<

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Historia
What do you do when you're faced with a big decision? If you're like most people, you probably make a pro and con list, spend a lot of time obsessing about decisions that didn't work out, get caught in analysis paralysis, endlessly seek other people's opinions to find just that little bit of extra information that might make you sure, and finally go with your gut.

Historia
Statistics are everywhere, as integral to science as they are to business, and in the popular media hundreds of times a day. In this age of big data, a basic grasp of statistical literacy is more important than ever if we want to separate the fact from the fiction, the ostentatious embellishments from the raw evidence - and even more so if we hope to participate in the future, rather than being simple bystanders.

This audiobook is much easier to follow when one has the print or electronic version on hand. Sir Spiegelhalter’s deep knowledge of statistics is demonstrated by his ability to explain the concepts in plain English. I also particularly enjoyed learning more about the people whose names were previously only associated with the different statistical tests and methods taught in class.. Fisher, Neymar, Pearson, Bayes, and the mysterious Student!

Historia
Philosophy begins with questions about the nature of reality and how we should live. These were the concerns of Socrates, who spent his days in the ancient Athenian marketplace asking awkward questions, disconcerting the people he met by showing them how little they genuinely understood. This engaging book introduces the great thinkers in Western philosophy and explores their most compelling ideas about the world and how best to live in it.
