Historia
Life is not easy for the poor relations of England’s upper crust, but fate and clever schemes bring them together. Lady Fortescue and Colonel Sandhurst hatch a plan: What if they were to transform her decrepit Bond Street home into a posh hotel, offering their guests the pleasure of being waited upon by nobility? With the help of other down-and-out aristocrats, they do just that, and London’s newest hotel, The Poor Relation, is born. The establishment is an immediate hit with London’s most illustrious citizens, save the Duke of Rowcester....

Fun new cozy series
Revisado: 03-18-23
I’m so glad to discover a new cozy mystery series- with the bonus of Davina Porter’s voice! I like when there’s some historical base, culture, clothes, and food from the time period are embedded. Fun characters, no S! Yea! I’m just about finished book 2, and it’s just as good.

Historia
Marvellously atmospheric tale of strangers summoned to a grand but neglected villa on the Italian coast. Each of them has been named in a will, but nobody knows their benefactress.... Four very different people are named in a will. Delia, an opera singer robbed of her voice by illness; George, an idealistic scientist who cannot face what his skills have created; Marjorie, desperately poor and unable to dislodge her writer’s block; and Lucius, ostensibly in control but whose personal life is in chaos.

I love cozy mystery series, especially the longer ones. This is especially interesting with the historical and literary references. You can’t go wrong visiting an historic Italian Villa! I love Nicolette’s voices. I really enjoyed this one in particular.

I love British cozy mysteries and Davina Porter’s reading. A healthy dose of embedded history, just enough characters, surprises, and good natured humor.

Weirdest cadence in reading?
Revisado: 01-11-21
Up, down, up, down, down, up. An up note at the end of each phrase and sentence where it would normally go down. It becomes hypnotizing and impossible to make sense of the story trying to get past it. Otherwise, her voice is beautiful and her accents are lovely to hear. Strangest phrasing though.
I couldn’t get past it.

Loved a lot about this book!
Revisado: 12-27-20
I love mysteries with history, clothes, food descriptions, no gore, and beautiful language. This has it all. However, I completely understand why it’s gotten mixed reviews. It’s as though someone went through and randomly separated sentences and added adjectives to the nouns. The flow gets jolts of these awkward interruptions. There are occasional oddities such as “very ancient.” I hate to be critical in any way, because I could never write something like this. It’s well thought out, detailed, and beautiful, but it needs a gentle editor who gets the writer and can clear up the cumbersome sentence bumps in the sections between the dialogue. I’ve tried hard, because I love the detail, and it makes me sad to not finish, because it’s got the potential to lead its category.

I love cozy mystery series’s- borderline violence
Revisado: 04-03-20
I’m sure a majority of people won’t think the violence is too much, but it took me by surprise and was occasionally gratuitous.
Otherwise, it was a good story as usual.
I hope this isn’t a new development in the series. I will be very disappointed, because I like when there are several books in a series.

Great book details and fun!
Revisado: 01-14-20
I’m obsessed with binging on this series. True to the Cozy Mysteries Style, nearly no gore, no sex, a little light romance.
Charming fun.
I wonder when the trend to say, “either side” when people mean “both sides” or “each side” of something, will be over. It’s a pet peeve, because it can cause confusion when the reader isn’t familiar with the pretension.
She actually deviated in this book and said each side!
I’m glad Ms. Carlisle cranked out so many. I still have 3 more to go.

loved it! I love the extra chapter where the author outlines her research of the 1920's from cultural sayings, about 20 book titles, and that she created a pintrest board of fashions and photos of a famous film star of the day.
