Historia
Boy George's compelling storytelling shines a light on his encounters with legendary figures like David Bowie, Prince, and Madonna, providing an intimate peek into the music industry's glittering world. Humor, sarcasm, and signature style are brought to this explosive and honest account of Boy George's life as a child growing up in sixties London and coming out to his Irish Catholic family. Hear his account of his exploration of his sexuality through the hedonism of the seventies (the glam rock and punk rock revolution that birthed Culture Club) and his ultimately embracing who he is today.

This was a really fun listen, winding and full of anecdotes. I especially loved the moments when Boy George laughed out loud himself! He remains a most iconic character, and utterly fascinating.

Historia
Vietnam became the Western world’s most divisive modern conflict, precipitating a battlefield humiliation for France in 1954, then a vastly greater one for the US in 1975. Max Hastings has spent the past three years interviewing scores of participants on both sides, as well as researching a multitude of American and Vietnamese documents and memoirs, to create an epic narrative of an epic struggle. Here are the vivid realities of strife amid jungle and paddies that killed two million people.

In the weeds…
Revisado: 06-18-23
I was looking for a book that would give me a 30,000 foot general overview of the Vietnam War and the American policies behind it. Instead I got a detailed, play-by-play account of a nearly day-by-day telling of the war from the perspective of those there fighting and the Vietnamese people themselves. So, for me slogging through the book felt like it took longer to listen to it than the war itself lasted. There was, though, enough of what I was looking for to keep me listening and I did manage to finish it. In sum, it’s not a bad book, but the listener should know what s/he is getting by choosing it.

Historia
In the summer of 1942, the Rabinowitz family narrowly escaped the Nazi ghetto in their Polish town by fleeing to the forbidding Bialowieza Forest. They miraculously survived two years in the woods—through brutal winters, Typhus outbreaks, and merciless Nazi raids—until they were liberated by the Red Army in 1944. After the war, they trekked across the Alps into Italy, where they settled as refugees before eventually immigrating to the United States.

This story needs to be made into a movie!
Revisado: 10-09-21
This book tells another side of Holocaust history, one that I was never aware of. I only wish that there had been more detail about how this family survived in the woods. I mean, how did they get through the harsh winters?? But in all fairness, the people who were interviewed for the book probably didn’t know as children all that the adults had had to do to make that happen.
What I really appreciated about this book, though, was its detail about the family’s life after being liberated - the challenges of putting their lives back together. I think many people erroneously assume that all was well for the Jews once the Third Reich fell. I have always wanted to learn more about that post-Holocaust experience and this book provided an informative overview.
My only real criticism of this listen was the narrator’s unchanging tone and cadence. Whether she was reading about a loving family moment or a heinous Nazi act her intonation was the same.
The recorded interviews with the surviving family members at the end of the listen were so very special! I felt privileged to listen to them.

The anchor of The O'Reilly Factor recounts one of the most dramatic stories in American history - how one gunshot changed the country forever. In the spring of 1865, the bloody saga of America's Civil War finally comes to an end after a series of increasingly harrowing battles. President Abraham Lincoln's generous terms for Robert E. Lee's surrender are devised to fulfill Lincoln's dream of healing a divided nation. But one man and his band of murderous accomplices are not appeased....

Historia
María Eva Duarte de Perón, known to the world as Evita, stands with Jesus Christ as a highly influential historical figure who lived only 33 years. The similarities do not end there: as Argentine novelist Tomás Eloy Martínez has observed, Evita came to "symbolize certain naïve, but effective, beliefs: the hope for a better world; a life sacrificed on the altar of the disinherited, the humiliated, the poor of the earth...myths which somehow reproduce the image of Christ."

This book read like a high school book report! I could have learned more about Eva Perón from Wikipedia! In fact, several chapters were devoted to merely critiquing plays and musicals about her life, rather than actually telling us about her life! This was a waste of an Audible credit!

Historia
Boy meets girl. Boy marries girl. Boy and girl enjoy the sparks in the early years, but eventually settle into a comfortable friendship, and all passion disappears from their marriage. That s just the way it goes, right? As many as one in three long-term marriages in America are sexless, and most people accept this as the inevitable course of a romantic relationship. In this groundbreaking book, Rabbi Shmuley Boteach explains why the prioritizing of love and companionship in marriage is all wrong, and why we should not go quietly into that dark night of celibate marriage.

Sayer describes Lewis’ early years, hinting at childhood evidence of the brilliance and eccentricity that would later become Lewis’ hallmarks. He discusses Lewis’ academic career, his life-transforming conversion to Christianity, and the role of religion in his life. With honesty and compassion, he covers Lewis’ controversial relationship with Mrs. Moore and his passionate marriage to Joy Davidman.

Revisado: 11-18-17
If only there were Academy Awards for narration! Rob Inglis deserves one for his performance here of the voices of multiple characters - and even singing! And what can I say about JRR Tolkien’s work itself? Of course, it is exquisite and enchanting, perfectly paced, with great character development and a satisfying ending.
