Not Whodunits but Great Stories All the Same
Revisado: 04-18-21
I came into this experience expecting short detective stories. While Dascheill Hammer's story is (sort of) the others are just great stories in their own right.
I will say the final story was a hard tonal shift- a sad tale of childhood romance turned to tragedy through race relations in the rural South. Again, this is very well written and performed, I just felt it stuck out from the others in a noticable way. I'm not deducting any stars for it.
All of the prose is tightly written and beautifully read. My favorite has to be the one with the opening line "Why don't we kill somebody?"
A glowing recommendation!

Outstanding performance! Gorgeous prose!
Revisado: 04-16-21
An eloquent book, beautifully narrated. The characters were so fascinating to me that I found myself listening as often as I could to see what happened between them and the mystery of Eleanor's traumatic past. In ways, it is a modest book. In other ways, it seems to be a grand love letter to... actually I'm not sure what. But I'm sure that it is one. I knew next to nothing about this novel prior to listening to it, and I feel that is the best way to experience it. If you are considering this book, I say go for it!

Lame
Revisado: 05-06-17
The voice narration was fine, but the story itself was beyond silly. There's a ghost who wants to scare a family but can't and they don't take him seriously. Then a little girl helps him to finally be at peace. By that synopsis, it may sound passable, but it was not. I didn't care about a single character, had no sympathy for the ghost, and the plot was like something a small child wrote. I cannot recommend this to anyone.

Judas Coyne is a collector of the macabre. But nothing he possesses is as unlikely or as dreadful as his latest discovery, a thing so terrible-strange, Jude can't help but reach for his wallet. For a thousand dollars, Jude will become the proud owner of a dead man's suit, said to be haunted by a restless spirit. But what UPS delivers to his door in a black heart-shaped box is no imaginary or metaphorical ghost. It's the real thing.

Ladies and gents, THIS is how you write a book!
Revisado: 04-27-17
Where does Heart-Shaped Box rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is the best audiobook by FAR!
What other book might you compare Heart-Shaped Box to and why?
Tough to say. I do see some similarities to Stephen King's writing style, but less long-winded.
What about Stephen Lang’s performance did you like?
Stephen Lang is the man! His voices for all the characters excellent. Like the way he does the hypnotic voice of Craddock or the low rumbly voice of Jude, then flips effortlessly over to little lady's southern drawl.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes!
Any additional comments?
One of the best books. I love the music they played between the sections of the book. It made me really excited. It was tough to stop listening because it was so good.

C'mon Jules! You can do better
Revisado: 04-21-17
What a painfully dull story! There is absolutely NO character development, save for the eccentric uncle Liddenbrock. We follow him, his nephew, and Hans (the pinnacle of one dimensionality) on a grueling, slow paced walk through a bunch of mostly empty caves. The book ends when the author realized the story was going nowhere and had them shoot up through a volcano without ever having reached the center of the Earth. What a waste of time!
