Not as good as the first 3 books in the series

Much less steamy/sexy than the first 3 books of the series. Barely any sex scenes. It takes forever for the characters to finally get together, but they finally get their HEA in the last 30 minutes of the novel. The author executed the alternating chapters between present and past quite well, which illustrated the history and evolution of the MCs romance. Well written and well narrated.

I didn’t care for the writing style, which switched back and forth between past & present tenses. It was also written in 3rd person-Omniscient narrator (extradiagetic)- a weird choice for a story marketed as an “historical romance”.
I got the impression that Ghostly Edwardians was a report (or a scholarly paper) rather than a work of fiction.
And that the book’s first draft was what got published, without any editing or correcting. The same adjectives were repeated ad nauseam - (I swear ‘ethereal’ was used upwards of 50 times in the latter half of the story). Descriptions were redundant and shallow, and did not paint a picture for me, the way a book usually does.
The characters were flat and under developed and the few instances of dialogue were not at all believable— people do not sit around talking about how great their love for one another is. It was simultaneously cheesy and academic.
Plus there were NOT ANY gratuitous sex scenes! Come on! If I’m gonna read a plotless romance, I at least expect some on page sex!

The narrator was fine, but I was disappointed with his robotic American accent. One of the perks of an English historical romance is getting to hear the story being read in a British accent.

Victorian era, class difference, m/m romance. Short and sweet.
Simon (a well to do gentleman is lonely and broken hearted after he discovers his lover had only been using him for $ and doesn’t actual care for him.

Simon meets Christopher at his gentleman’s club. Only Christopher isn’t actually a member there. Christopher’s brother, Will - (the MC of the next story in the series) is a waiter at the club. And he sneaks Christopher in to try to win $ at cards to help their large family pay for Christmas.
After a sultry rendevous in one of the upstairs rooms, Simon and Christopher part ways, not thinking it possible to meet again.
However, neither man can get the other out of his mind.
When Simon learns that Will got fired from his position at the club, and on Christmas Eve, Simon feels guilty and responsible. Simon/Christopher are in fact a bit responsible, in a round about way— which only makes sense given the time period’s atrocious exploitation of “lessers”, tendency to devalue “the help” and de-humanize the lower classes altogether). So Simon decides to actually follow up on Christopher’s invitation to join his family’s Christmas Day celebrations. Simon shows up at Christopher’s overcrowded home made up of family, friends and “refugees” from the streets. Simon brings lots of presents and food, dressed up as Santa for the children— and it’s very sweet. Simon reveals how smitten he truly is with Christopher, despite all the obstacles of social/class differences. And for once Simon feels a part of a grateful/loving family… as Christopher helps Simon out of his father Christmas attire -wink wink- sexy time.

Not my favorite, but well narrated, with a feel-good HEA

Very well narrated.
Cards on the table: I am not a big fan of contemporary m/m romances. My literary preferences in order, lean strongly toward:
1. m/m historical
2. m/m paranormal/magical + historical &
3. other m/m SFF/speculative fiction especially if the world in the story lacks modern technology (for that historical vibe).

So, given that The Ends of the Earth by Keira Andrews did not meet criteria for “my type of book”, i.e. not my favorite genre AND lacking in my preferred tropes and sexual kinks, I’ll still admit it was a coherent and well done story.
Instead of being like the types of books I normally gravitate toward, this one contained: age gap, single father, blended family, gay parents, and the kink of come-play. None of which are of particular interest to me.
However despite all these obstacles I still found the romance between Jason & Ben an acceptable read.
It had a sweet and wholesome HEA. I wish there had been more on page sex scenes, but it was alright.

Amazing writing. Steamy forbidden romance. Excellent plot which stands on its on— not as an after thought to pad the sexy romance. Plot and romance are perfectly balanced as always. KJCharles is unquestionably the very best contemporary author of gay historical romance.

I Really loved it! I hope the rest of the series is as good as book 1.
I’ll guiltily admit that I think I might like Hexworld more than even Whyborne & Griffin series (I know! Blasphemous!)
I loved the dynamic between the two main character lovers: Tom and Cicero. Super equitable partnership. Their romance is: Tender, sweet, & steamy hot. Plus sexy AF intimate love-making.
Plot Summary (spoilers!)
In a world where magic is real, there are 2 separate law enforcement agencies: the regular police and the magical police. Liam O’Connell AKA Tom Halloran which is the name Liam assumed 8 years prior, after being forced into hiding to deny his past, ever since his rare Hex-breaking ability resulted in the death of his entire family, now works as a cop for the regular police (he hides his witch potential and especially his rare hex-breaking power, for fear that people will manipulate and exploit his powers for nefarious gain).
Out of the blue a series of strange cases reminds Tom of the circumstances in which his own family died horribly 8 years ago. But the cases get incorrectly tagged as a matter for the regular police, even though Tom knows that magic and hexes are involved. A desire to get to the bottom of what happened to his own family and prevent further deaths, lead Tom reluctantly to collaborate with the magical police, in order to find answers. Putting himself on the magical police’s radar risks exposing Tom’s secrets, revealing his true identity, and most dangerously, his own past criminal culpability.
Tom meets Cicero, a yet to be bonded witch’s familiar (or feral, as un-bonded familiars are called). The feral, Cicero is a flamboyant and very attractive man who can take the form of a black cat. Cicero knows instantly that Tom is “his witch”— which is odd, since Tom’s file indicates that he has no witch potential— he is a regular man, working for the regular police.
A very wary Cicero keeps the knowledge that Tom is “his witch” to himself—he doesn’t want to make the mistake of entering into a life long bond with a man who might mistreat and subjugate him. Familiars and Witch’s do not often enjoy an equitable partnership, after all. Witch’s have all the power over their bonded familiar. And often witches treat their familiars like pets, or worse, as slaves. Initially, Cicero makes all the wrong assumptions about Tom. But once the two start to get to know one another the sparks fly, and before long they are tumbling into bed together. Cicero soon realizes that he pre-judged Tom, and his initial assessments had been all wrong. In reality, Tom is gentle and kind, very protective of others, and most of all, a generous and thoughtful lover. The heat between Cicero and Tom continues to build to a sizzling inferno, until the pair decide to take the plunge and enter into the Witch-Familiar bond. But not long after they’d bonded, Tom’s secrets snd past are revealed, leaving Cicero feeling betrayed and devastated. When Tom is forced to tell all about his true identity and involvement in his family’s deaths, he is arrested and whisked away to jail. Tom selflessly figures out a way to use his rare hex-breaking ability to sever the bond between Cicero and himself (a bond that can only be broken in death - or so everyone thought). Tom severs the witch-familiar bond in order to set Cicero free, to allow Cicero to bond with another witch or at least to continue his work for the magical constabulary, since being bonded to Tom, a disgraced criminal, left Cicero with nothing. But once the bond is broken and Cicero believes that to mean Tom has been killed, Cicero is devastated, and feels hollow and empty. All the anger he’d felt toward Tom for his betrayal seemed insignificant compared to the idea of losing him for good.
In prison, an attempt on Tom’s life is made, making Tom concerned for Cicero’s safety- if they’d come after Tom in prison to silence him, Cicero must certainly be in danger. After all he and Cicero had been inseparable since the start of their undercover investigation.
A police co-worker and friend of Tom’s decides to trust and believe Tom. He signs Tom out of jail, and into his custody and agrees to help him to ensure Cicero’s safety. The two men, Tom, a disgraced and de-badged criminal and Bill, a sympathetic member of the regular police seek the aid of the magical police and of other feral familiars to rescue Cicero from the clutches of the conspirators linked to the death of Tom’s family 8 years ago, to several other recent suspicious deaths, and to an unknown plot due to be carried out at the New Year’s celebration, just a few days away. despite the fact that Tom believes that Cicero despises him, he risks his own life to rescue Cicero.
Finding Cicero indeed in imminent danger, Tom rescues him, along with another missing feral familiar who’d been caged and drained nearly to death by a witch who Cicero had called a friend. Cicero leaps into Tom’s arms when they are reunited, all betrayals forgiven. Cicero, now knows he can trust Tom completely, as no other witch would ever willingly break the bond with their familiar for the benefit if the familiar alone. Cicero and Tom re-bond. ❤️❤️❤️
An all around happily ever after ending to an exciting plot with proper villainous bad guys and evil conspiracies.

Fifty-year-old Benedict has been celibate and ashamed most of his life. After his first and only lover snubbed him while they were still at school together, the next 30 years of Benedict’s life consisted only of piety, collecting antiquities, practising extreme introversion, isolation and celibacy. Benedict avoids all human connection, even the most innocuous of physical contact because of the carnal desire that the touch of another man’s flesh stir in him.

Out of the blue Benedict’s first and only lover, Ewan, (with whom Benedict has had no contact for over 30 years), reaches out with a last minute Christmastime missive to an event at his family estate for the auctioning off of Ewan’s deceased father’s collection of art and antiquities, which successfully tempts Benedict to attend, despite the last minute summons.
Benedict, having never truly gotten over Ewan, attends the house party and is promptly seduced by the conniving and selfish man that Ewan has become. Ewan’s true nature is revealed to Benedict with some helpful nudges from a familiar, handsome, and boldly flirtatious younger man.
Ewan promises to gift Benedict with the phallic staff that Benedict has coveted for 30 years, but at the last minute the staff is stolen. Benedict’s journey and reunion with Ewan all seems to have been for naught. Plus Benedict finds out that Ewan betrayed him once again, as he never intended to hand over the staff to Benedict as he’d promised.
Benedict cannot bear to waste another minute wallowing in his heartbreak over Ewan. After all, he had already spent more than half his life mourning the loss of Ewan’s companionship, and hating his own “immoral” proclivity toward his own sex.
Re-enter the handsome young stranger (Sebastian), who is revealed to be a Robin Hood sort of thief, who steals valuable items from rich men who obtained said items through nefarious means, and restores them to their rightful owner.
Initially, Sebastian means to approach the aptly positioned auction house owner, Benedict with a business arrangement. However, when looking into Benedict…. after all, Sebastian must do his due diligence to investigate Benedict before making an approach to propose a business partnership, Sebastian finds that he’s far more interested in Benedict as a man… Well in actuality, Sebastian is primarily interested in Benedict as a lover. So Sebastian seeks to seduce Benedict. But first he must convince Benedict to overcome his shame and self-loathing and accept the intimate touch of another man…. Which he does, ever so gallantly… washing away the many years Benedict has spent in isolation and celibacy, with a single grand romantic gesture and sexy as hell seduction scene. I cannot wait to read the rest of Benedict’s and Sebastian’s story in the much lengthier 2nd book of the series: “The Gentleman’s Thief”.

Very sweet short story about young love, adventure, travel, and starting a life together. Excellent narration by Joel Leslie— I love when he does British accents! His voice has this quavery longing in it that adds to the feelings of lust, love, desire. I Highly recommend this story, and all audiobooks performed by Joel Leslie.
