Hard to Follow at Times
Revisado: 07-09-22
I liked listening to this book until the end (the last hour and a half) when it was confusing to follow and drug along a bit. I usually love Lisa See's books, but this one didn't work so well for me. The narrator is ok, but it was difficult at times to determine which character was talking. The narrator's voice didn't change even slightly with the different characters.

Historia
When Cathleen Harrington leaves her home in Ireland in 1919 to travel to South Africa, she knows that she does not love the man she is to marry there - her fiance Edward, whom she has not seen for five years. Isolated and estranged in a small town in the harsh Karoo desert, her only real companions are her diary and her housemaid, and later the housemaid's daughter, Ada. When Ada is born, Cathleen recognizes in her someone she can love and respond to in a way that she cannot with her own family.

Wonderful narration and a great book.
Revisado: 03-11-16
This is a great book about the joys and challenges of two women in South Africa during the 1900's and Apartheid. The narration by Bahni Turpin is superb, and the accent she introduced in Ada, the housemaid's daughter, is amazingly beautiful! For me, listening to the audio book was the best way to enjoy the book because of Bahni Turpin's narration. At first, I thought Turpin must be from South Africa; but when I investigated, I discovered she is an actress who brought the book to life with her wonderful accented narration.
This is a terrific book--one of my very favorites! If I could give it six stars, I would have. Enjoy!

Historia
In the grand storytelling style that is his signature, James Michener sweeps us back through time to the very beginnings of the Jewish faith, thousands of years ago. Through the predecessors of four modern men and women, we experience the entire colorful history of the Jews, including the life of the early Hebrews and their persecutions, the impact of Christianity, the Crusades, and the Spanish Inquisition, all the way to the founding of present-day Israel and the Middle East conflict.

A Great Read - Entertaining and Educational
Revisado: 08-13-15
This is one of my favorite novels by Michener. I originally purchased the audio version quite a few years ago on many, many CD's (a rather cumbersome way to listen) and am thrilled most of the Michener novels are now available by download through Audible.com! The story...through an excavation, the "source" of the Jewish religion is uncovered and passes through time up to the 20th century. Although this is a novel, there was much research done for its writing, and I learned a lot. Larry McKeever's narration is great! As with all Michener novels, this book is very lengthy, and it may take a little while to sort the characters and get started, but it is well worth the read. After I finished listening, I felt I was giving up a good friend and hated to let it go.

Historia
Miss Julia, a recently bereaved and newly wealthy widow, is only slightly bemused when one Hazel Marie Puckett appears at her door with a youngster in tow and unceremoniously announces that the child is the bastard son of Miss Julia's late husband. Suddenly, this longtime church member and pillar of her small Southern community finds herself in the center of an unseemly scandal - and the guardian of a wan nine-year-old whose mere presence turns her life upside down.

Khaled Hosseini did it again--Wonderful!
Revisado: 02-06-14
I really liked Kite Runner, believed A Thousand Splendid Suns was heartbreaking but even better than Kite Runner, but And the Mountains Echoed is, I believe, the best of all three.
This is multiple stories interconnected by family members, friends, and acquaintences. While listening to the three different narrators, it made these stories more real and interesting. It takes a little getting used to the narrators' voices with accents. I considered purchasing the hardcover book to review for spellings of names and places. This is a book I can listen to over and over again.
I so believe this is a wonderful book and well worth reading or listening! Bravo!

Historia
China, 1957: Chairman Mao has declared a new openness in society. “Let a hundred flowers bloom; let a hundred schools of thought contend.” Many intellectuals fear it is only a trick, and Kai Ying’s husband, Sheng, a teacher, has promised not to jeopardize their safety or that of their young son, Tao. But one July morning, just before his sixth birthday, Tao watches helplessly as Sheng is dragged away for writing a letter criticizing the Communist Party and sent to a labor camp for “reeducation”. Once again, Tsukiyama brings us a powerfully moving story of ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances with grace and courage.

Historia
Andrew Yancy—late of the Miami Police and soon-to-be-late of the Monroe County sheriff’s office—has a human arm in his freezer. There’s a logical (Hiaasenian) explanation for that, but not for how and why it parted from its shadowy owner. Yancy thinks the boating-accident/shark-luncheon explanation is full of holes, and if he can prove murder, the sheriff might rescue him from his grisly Health Inspector gig (it’s not called the roach patrol for nothing).

Good Enough Story, but Performance Was Weak
Revisado: 08-03-13
I was so looking forward to listening to this book. Although this story was not as good as previous Carl Hiaasen books, it was good enough. Unfortunately, the performance was not well done which weakened the entire experience. I hope the author and publisher goes back to George Wilson or another previous narrator for future books.

Historia
First published in 1970, nine years after Hemingway's death, this is the story of an artist and adventurer, a man much like Hemingway himself. Beginning in the 1930s, Islands in the Stream follows the fortunes of Thomas Hudson, from his experiences as a painter on the Gulf Stream island of Bimini through his antisubmarine activities off the coast of Cuba during World War II. Hemingway is at his mature best in this beguiling tale.

Bruce Greenwood's Narration was Amazing!
Revisado: 04-11-13
What did you love best about Islands in the Stream?
I am so amazed how Bruce Greenwood could change his characterizations and accents for each of the so many characters and so seamlessly. I agree with one reader that I have never heard a narrator do such a wonderful reading! The performance is the best part of this book.
The book is good, but quite sad. I liked the first parts best, but found the WWII section rather drawn out. Overall, if you like Hemmingway, you will like this.
What about Bruce Greenwood’s performance did you like?
Everything!

Did Not Like This One
Revisado: 08-22-11
I found this book depressing. I don't need to be brought down by disfunctional characters. The story went nowhere except down and then out of control. What's the point?
Sorry, found the female narrator sing-songy.

Loved this Book!
Revisado: 07-14-09
I started reading this book, not remembering much of what it was about. I was immediately captivated by the story line, the wonderful descriptions, and characters. What an adventure. It was hard for me to stop listening!
The narrator, Jonathan Davis, was wonderful; and his depictions of the many characters were flawless. I will be looking for more books authored by Carlos Ruiz Zafon and more books narrated by Jonathan Davis.
