Yikes
Revisado: 02-21-25
I wanted to like this one, but it was just too hard. First of all, as others mentioned, the character voices are so awful- it’s painfully distracting! Secondly, I would love to take an editor’s pen to this story. While there are some beautiful insights to be found, the story is way too long and loses its way. I found the ending a severe disappointment for the time that was invested into listening to this. Also many of the theological and philosophical “discussions” come across as really forced and too on the nose. I want those 36 hours back!

Historia
Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God, and no myth, revolutionary, or misunderstood prophet, insists Benedict XVI. He thinks that the best of historical scholarship, while it can't "prove" Jesus is the Son of God, certainly doesn't disprove it. Indeed, Benedict maintains that the evidence, fairly considered, brings us face-to-face with the challenge of Jesus-a real man who taught and acted in ways that were tantamount to claims of divine authority, claims not easily dismissed as lunacy or deception.

It was very good. I hope he is named a Doctor of the Church! All three of the books in the series are worth the read.

Historia
Just a century after it had begun, philosophy entered its greatest age with the appearance of Socrates, who spent so much of his time talking about philosophy on the streets of Athens that he never got around to writing anything down. His method of aggressive questioning, called dialectic, was the forerunner of logic; he used it to cut through the twaddle of his adversaries and arrive at the truth. Rather than questioning the world, he believed, we would be better off questioning ourselves.

Irrational and Biased
Revisado: 03-23-23
Just like a CNN reporter that thinks everyone wants to know their personal judgments regarding the story, this author can't help but show his bias at every turn. Want to get into the mind of a particular philosopher to try and best understand them? Don't read this book. Want to get into the mind of a post-modernist suffering from chronological snobbery? Read this book. I am preparing for my doctoral comps in philosophy and I thought I would try this series as a way of continuing to think about the texts while working out and driving. It didn't help me to focus on the philosopher or texts at all but to ponder the author's opinions. It also stinks of the irrational secularism and materialism of post-modern America.
