Just Meh...
Revisado: 10-26-15
The Odd Thomas franchise and its popularity compelled me to final give in and get this book, and I wasn't as swept up as many seem to be. Koontz puts together a decent enough story, albeit weird and out there (which is to be expected), but it just didn't do it for me. I'd call it your average, run of the mill book: not a waste of money, but I won't be going back for Odd Thomas either.

Historia
A young woman's body is found on a side street in Indianapolis, horrifyingly arranged. Meanwhile Frank Behr, who is down on his luck and virtually broke, takes on a no-win case to locate a single mother's wayward daughter who's been missing for months. Suddenly Behr feels the two cases may be connected, but he is years removed from his life as a legitimate police officer and has few friends left on the force. His relentless focus has always been his greatest strength...and his deepest flaw.

Takes creepy to a new level...
Revisado: 10-26-15
Look, there are a lot of reviews here that get on the author for the animal cruelty - I have to tell you it almost stopped me from getting it. Almost. Don't believe everything you read - the flashbacks presented in the book are nowhere near as gruesome as some would have you believe, and honestly considering the subject matter it is almost expected. If you are not into creepy, serial killer type books then this is not for you. I can tell you that the author does a masterful job of getting the killer's point across without being gratuitous. What's better is that Scott Brick's creepy narration made it even better. One of the most enjoyable and captivating books I have listened to, and I'll probably listen again at some point - not something I often do, but worth it in this case. I'll be looking for more David Levien books in the future.

Historia
Someone is knocking at the door to Grace Adams' house, and he won't stop. Grace thinks she knows who it is, but when she goes to her second floor window for a look she sees a woman she doesn't recognize. The woman isn't alone for long before a man emerges from the dark of the surrounding woods, stabs her, and leaves her for dead. Trying to help, Grace goes to the woman and is shocked to find that it's her mother Leanne - a woman who abandoned her 11 years before.

You can do better
Revisado: 04-28-15
Although it had promise in the first few chapters, it went downhill to a very predictable and boring outcome. I can usually bear a weak story if there is enough action and intrique on "whodunnit", but in this case there was very little that held my interest and I felt little connection with the central character Grace. I also did not enjoy the narrator and found her pace a bit too slow and deliberate to be enjoyable. I do see some hope in the character of Macy and I may give the second book in this series a go when it finally gets released depending on how some of the initial reviews come back. Overall, I give this book a below average rating.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Amazing Journey
Revisado: 04-28-15
The Martian is a great story mixed with geeky scientific facts and was thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end. Although predictable to a certain degree, the journey of this abandoned soul was both tense at times and laugh out loud funny. Any great book can be easily ruined by a narrator, but in this case he was a perfect fit and had just the right amount of tempo and voice characterization. I highly recommend this audio book.
