Historia
Tashué’s faith in the law is beginning to crack. Three years ago, he stood by when the Authority condemned Jason to the brutality of the Rift for non-compliance. When Tashué’s son refused to register as tainted, the laws had to be upheld. He’d never doubted his job as a Regulation Officer before, but three years of watching your son wither away can break down even the strongest convictions. Then a dead girl washed up on the bank of the Brightwash, tattooed and mutilated.

Slow burn w/ emphasis on BURN
Revisado: 02-23-24
Ms. Matar has crafted quite a story here. The lore and the world are unique and engaging, which leaves me constantly uncertain in the best way. The various threads of mystery and intrigue are well-balanced throughout, and the blood is slightly more plentiful than the orgasms.
The metaphors/lessons are clear but not heavy-handed, and I appreciate that. I loved the depth and variety of characters, and the agony and ecstasy they felt. This is a world of struggle and cruelty adjacent to opulence and a veneer of refinement, and it’s wonderfully painful to inhabit.

Town marshal Elias Faust thinks that he can make any problem go away if he throws enough lead at it. The living’s easy for a lawman. Bloody, but easy - that is, until Magnate Gregdon arrives with his undead syndicate to tear the town of Blackpeak, Texas apart. When a shootout with a pair of outlaws goes sideways, Elias Faust accidentally draws the Magnate’s attention. As if dealing with arcane sorcery, reanimated corpses, and the Magnate’s personal vendetta aren’t enough, Faust finds himself at the center of a power-struggle for Blackpeak’s eldritch secrets.

Gold standard for the Western Fantasy genre
Revisado: 12-29-22
Denton has established for me the balance and the recipe for Western Fantasy. This story is gorgeous and gritty, it’s a true western wherein weird and otherworldly shit goes down, and the simple drives of frontier women and men struggle to understand what they can and shoot what they can’t. It’s mysterious, and our narrator wrestles with reality such that we can’t know whether he’s got the right of it or not. All that, and the narrator handles voices and western inflection with profound deftness.
An absolute pleasure, leaving me eager for more.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

How is this not written by an old man? ❤️
Revisado: 02-16-21
It’s quite a tale, and even though the narration of the younger Jacob didn’t work well for me, the portions of older Jacob were so delicious and introspective and careful that they made up for it. I’m so glad that it ended how it did...I was tempted to give up a few times, but I was crying by the end. What a journey.

Slow Burn...Love It!
Revisado: 01-06-21
How do we get kick-ass damaged characters with fire in their blood doing epic things to save the world?
We back it up...WAY up, and show us how they got there...the moments large and small that built them into the tortured heroes we want to root for.
And if not for having gone along on the journey of their becoming, if we’d simply been presented with epic characters, their hurts and loves and powers would be unbelievable even as we seek out tales of such.
The Warded Man takes a long road to get awesome, while managing to be great all along the way.

Deeper and more excellent than it seems

Don’t let the opening bloodbath and video game-like progression turn you away. Never Die is complex and twisty and gory and has the ingredients for laughter and tears mixed in. Very fun, to the grisly end.

Greg Tremblay kicks it up a notch with an international cast of characters of two genders, seamlessly and consistently performed. Amazing.

A young boy, Duffy, watches helplessly as his father drinks himself to death, prompting him to vow that he will never, ever be like his father. But when Duffy is a young man, he has become exactly like his father and desperately struggles to find a way to a life worth living. This gripping memoir is an intimate journey from the perils of trying to survive in an insanely dysfunctional home to becoming a drunken, drug-addled tornado blowing through the lives of others, while laying waste to his own.

Profoundly honest
Revisado: 01-08-20
Jeffrey Pohn is a storyteller, an entertainer...it just so happens that his story is one of heartbreaking depth and too-wild-to-be-true vignettes. He’s a kind of Forrest Gump, in the sense of careening through personal struggles at times and places that history will deem significant.
Jeffrey is also painfully and hilariously honest, and that’s what we need: the curtains thrown open, the dust blown off, and some fresh air stirring up the inherent shame and secrecy in addiction.
There is real healing to be had here, and we can hear and feel it in Jeffrey’s own voice. There are moments of resonance, I dare say for anyone, even non-alcoholics. For me, this tale ends with tears and deep relief and gratitude.

Immersive and emotional
Revisado: 03-02-19
I freakin LOVE it when books make me cry. The story flows right along without a noticeable change in tone or storytelling mastery (as sometimes happens over the course of very long tales). Our heroine is inspiring, and nobody’s role is clear-cut or unchangeable. Twists abound.
Ms. Comes’ performance is stellar. She holds up not only the emotional weight of the storytelling, but flawlessly keeps track of and transitions between a host of distinct voices and accents. Amazing.

Not what I expected. Better.
Revisado: 02-15-19
I don’t know if there’s a clear way to describe the story of Harry Clarke. I spent most of it aghast and amused and astonished, if that helps.
Billy Crudup’s adept vocal performance is absolutely top-notch.
Just leave your expectations at the door and be open to an amazing experience.
(Lillian and the behind-the-scenes bits are inspiring too!)
