Solid Brutal Horror
Revisado: 01-28-25
This was a solid horror read from start to finish and I believe his debut novel. It starts with a bang and some good mystery. It then takes us down a few notches and steadily builds the horror of a family moving into a new neighborhood only to be terrorized by a dark presence... perhaps a crazy neighbor... perhaps more? It gets brutal by the end. Also, it's related to some of his other books. So far, I've only read "The Exorcist's House" (which is a sort of prequel to "Anathema") but I will read the others. A few quibbles with things characters did here or there but nothing serious. 4 stars

"As Confederate soldier Martin Tomball faces death, freezing overnight on a battlefield, Mother Cold comes to make a deal—a deal that will curse his family for generations to come. Now, in the winter of 2021, Texas is hit with a state-wide ice storm, leaving millions of households without power. Frozen Faustian Deal with the Devil
Revisado: 11-09-24
Review: "This House Will Never Be Warm" by Paul Avery Tindol.
This is a short, enjoyable frozen horror tale with an inventive villain. It's the tale of a family's generational curse, brought upon them by the selfishness of an individual during the American Civil War in a sort of Faustian "make a deal with the devil" kind of moment. But this time, the hell that gets experienced is very cold. It culminates in modern times. I feel like there could be more room to explore other generations and flesh this out into a longer tale, but it works at its current 127 pages. I listened to the audiobook version.

Historia
Rachel's parents have a simple rule: five hours of sleep. No more, no less. But after six months of this "simple" schedule, Rachel's exhausted mind plays tricks on her. She sees things that can't be real. Like the Boogeyman in her little brother's room. When no one believes her, Rachel takes matters into her own hands. But her sleep-deprived state blurs the line between reality and nightmare. Is the grotesque figure with too many teeth just a hallucination? Or is there something sinister lurking in the shadows?

Another Great Entry in the "I Found" Horror Series
Revisado: 10-12-24
This was a good, quick, creepy read. Without getting spoiler-y, Ben did a good job of setting up expectations that he later subverts. I don’t want to say too much, but if you’ve read previous entries in the “I Found” series, you may be a bit surprised by this one as there is a key difference. Again, I can’t say without giving away too much but an expectation I had was subverted, and not in a bad way. If I have a critique, it’s that I’d like it to have been a touch more drawn-out and developed a touch more. As far as gripes go, that ain’t bad. As they say, “Always leave them wanting more.” And Ben does that here. Bravo! I recommend “I Found the Boogeyman Under My Brother’s Crib.”

Creepy poem about child mortality? check.
Menacing spirits? Check.
Ghost children? Check.
Yes, this book has it. I just finished the audiobook for "The Dead Children's Playground" by James Kaine and I'm pleased to announce it hits a lot of the right horror buttons. It's got relatable characters, atmospheric horror, and believable peril. Plus, there's just something unnerving about ghost kids, am I right? I can safely recommend this one to horror fans.

A Great Possession Tale
Revisado: 04-03-24
I just finished listening to the audiobook. I've read plenty of Stephen King, and a bit of Koontz. I've even written and published several of my own horror novels (Ghosts & Werewolves... with more to come). I haven't done much reading demon possession or oppression stories, however. Sure, I've seen "The Exorcist" movie (there is more than one homage to it in these pages) and a few other things like it. So, this was a bit of a first for me.
It did not disappoint.
For one thing, it's well-written. The story is engaging. The characters are fairly straightforward and believable. There were a good handful of twists I had not expected. I'd recommend this to any horror fan.
I'm really looking forward to The Exorcist's House: Origins which Nick is working on now. If it's as good as this one, it should be a decent and enjoyable horror-ride. I also understand his earlier book, Anathema, is tied to this one somehow. I will have to check that one out, too. Count me as a new Nick Roberts fan.

Revisado: 11-14-20
I read the book more than 20 years ago and it quickly became one of my all-time favorite books. I've given away several copies. Now I just finished listening to the audio book and was reminded why it was so great. It's a thinking-person's fantasy. It's provocative and provides characters to love and hate. Totally worth it.

There are tales of Middle-earth from times long before The Lord of the Rings. The story told in this book is set in the great country that lay beyond the Grey Havens in the West: lands where Treebeard once walked, but which were drowned in the great cataclysm that ended the First Age of the World.
