Historia
This is DC Smith's third investigation with the Diver and Diver Associates agency. They have been asked by a member of Norfolk's aristocracy to look into the tragic death of her younger brother, Freddie, the late Lord Thorpe of the title. The inquest verdict was of misadventure, but it isn't long before Smith begins to suspect there has been a serious miscarriage of justice.

Literary Procedural Plus Family Drama
Revisado: 11-24-24
Grainger hits another one out of the park with this one. Grainger weaves in his fascination for how people observe each other, how they read the room, the minds, and the memories of the people they encounter. It is always a pleasure to spend time inside the thoughts of DC Smith. He has a big big heart that he keeps under wraps. The evolving relationships that people are drawn into through the process of a crime investigation are often one of Grainger's themes.
Grainger excels at the art of the gorgeous final paragraph. His last sentences take a metaphorical look back at the story's journey and place a blessing on them. The Late Lord Thorpe concludes with another such work of art.
Gildart Jackson embodies these books to perfection.

Historia
Jasmyn and King Williams move their family to the planned Black utopia of Liberty, California hoping to find a community of like-minded people, a place where their growing family can thrive. King settles in at once, embracing the Liberty ethos, including the luxe wellness center at the top of the hill, which proves to be the heart of the community. But Jasmyn struggles to find her place. She expected to find liberals and social justice activists striving for racial equality, but Liberty residents seem more focused on booking spa treatments and ignoring the world’s troubles.

Weird yet interesting story
Revisado: 08-07-24
The Stepford Wives meets Black Lives Matter in this creepy-fun story. The story features a planned community for African American home buyers. It offers a lifestyle of no stress and no aggression, neither micro- nor macro- for community members. Too good to be true? Oh yes it is.

As far as Jolene is concerned, her interactions with her colleagues should start and end with her official duties as an admin for Supershops, Inc. Unfortunately, her irritating, incompetent coworkers don’t seem to understand the importance of boundaries. Her secret to survival? She vents her grievances in petty email postscripts, then changes the text color to white so no one can see. That is until one of her secret messages is exposed. Her punishment: sensitivity training (led by the suspiciously friendly HR guy, Cliff) and rigorous email restrictions.

Very entertaining story about office politics
Revisado: 08-07-24
Not a literary title, but a good quick entertaining read about office politics. The protagonist is an outsider because of her Iranian background. She accidentally is given access to all the office emails including personal texts and emails. Yikes! Can you imagine? It is obviously way way too much information, but her boredom and lonliness influence her to plunge into spying on all these communications.
I'm deducting one star from the "Story" for making the cute love interest the young woman's savior.
Otherwise, a fun story. The narrator has a fantastic way with accents, this adds a lot to the listener's experience.

Engrossing and fascinating thriller
Revisado: 08-07-24
This story made my 12-hour trip back from Europe not only bearable but enjoyable. The changing points of view provide a constantly changing perspective on the central catastrophe of a young woman having gone missing. Each actor is convincing. It's a fairly typical story of a young man abusing a girlfriend but the different viewpoints and the backstories of the various characters make for a multi-layered drama. This story made me realize how easy it is for a young woman to fall under the control of a predator, even a girl from a loving family.

Historia
Eilis Lacey is Irish, married to Tony Fiorello, a plumber and one of four Italian American brothers, all of whom live in neighboring houses on a cul-de-sac in Lindenhurst, Long Island, with their wives and children and Tony’s parents, a huge extended family. It is the spring of 1976 and Eilis is now forty with two teenage children. Though her ties to Ireland remain stronger than those that hold her to her new land and home, she has not returned in decades.

A Let-Down after Toibin's Previous Book Brooklyn
Revisado: 06-16-24
This is the second in what will probably be a trilogy. The first was Brooklyn, which I absolutely loved. Brooklyn is a story of youth and hope and accomplishment -- about taking action! It was inspiring and moving.
Long Island takes up the story about twenty years after the ending of Brooklyn. The protagonist is now middle aged and dealing with many issues common to that stage of life. This could have been a terrific novel. It is not written in the stars that all books about middle age have to be depressing! In this story, the chief characters are passive, passive, passive. All of them! They just drift along, sometimes drifting into disaster without taking responsibility for the fact that a "drift" is still a choice.
I wanted to shake each and every one of them. The story ends on a cliff hanger without anything being resolved. I wouldn't waste a credit on this one if you can possibly get it from the library for free.
I'm hoping that in the next book Toibin will make his characters wake up and take action, make decisions, have aspirations, not just last minute half baked escape plans.

Police Mystery - Unflaggingly Engaging
Revisado: 06-02-24
What a good story. Every minute is interesting, plot moves along. No boring parts at all. Characters are good. Plot evolves at a good pace, is believable and gets ever more complicated step by step. The narrator has a beautiful Irish accent and does all the voices perfectly. Home run.

Moving, enthralling storytelling
Revisado: 02-12-24
The entire Narnia Chronicles are available through this title for just one credit. Each chapter is listed by book and by chapter title, so navigation is easy. For a single collection of an entire series, this is so helpful.
The narration is superlative, featuring a variety of narrators -- each one better than the one before. They capture the humor and the seriousness and the imagination of the books. I first read this when I was about 11 years old and now at age 71 I am enjoying it even more.

Historia
When 14-year-old Zoe Johnson doesn't come home on a Monday night in early December, the alarm bells in Kings Lake Central police station do not ring straight away - after all, she's from the Dockmills, one of the toughest estates in the town. But for Detective Sergeant DC Smith, due to retire in just three weeks' time, there are some strange echoes of the case that has haunted him for the past 13 years. Maybe it's simply his over-developed sense of irony, or maybe, in his final days as a police officer, Smith must look once more into the eyes of a serial killer.

Stunner Conclusion to DC Smith's Career
Revisado: 02-03-24
The weeks are winding down to DC Smith's retirement date. He is working on a missing girl case. All of the DC Smith titles are first rate -- laid-back elegance in the writing, great plot, interesting characters. But this, this is a stunner. The conclusion is utterly heart-pounding. The narrator, always superlative in this series, makes the climactic chapter of Private Investigation into a 3-D movie, truly fantastic.

Historia
From the glamorous to the entitled, from royalty to the financially ruined, everyone who wanted to be seen—or just to gawk—at the hottest restaurants in New York City came to places Michael Cecchi-Azzolina helped run. His phone number was passed around among those who wanted to curry favor, during the decades when restaurants replaced clubs and theater as, well, theater in the most visible, vibrant city in the world. Besides dropping us back into a vanished time, Your Table Is Ready takes us places we’d never be able to get into on our own.

A Must-Read for Foodies and Many Others
Revisado: 10-27-23
The author does a great job narrating the story of his lifetime of experience working in restaurants, from server to Maitre d'. You hear the love of the entire world of the restaurant in his voice and in every sentence. In contrast to books like Kitchen Confidential, which is focussed on the kitchen and the cooking, this is more focussed on the front of the house, The drama over reservations, the nuances of hospitality and how people are greeted, how a room is organized, how the human relationships influence the dining experience -- all this comes to life. Loved listening to this book.

Historia
Tom Lowe’s identity and his pride are invested in the work he does with his back and his hands. He designed and built his family’s dream home, working extra hours to pay off the adjustable rate mortgage he took on the property, convinced he is making every sacrifice for the happiness of his wife and son. Until, in a moment of fatigued inattention, shingling a roof in too-bright sunlight, he falls. In constant pain, addicted to painkillers at the cost of his relationships with his wife and son, Tom slowly comes to realize that he can never work again.

The Heroism of Acceptance
Revisado: 07-21-23
It's an extraordinary story of defeat and acceptance. You follow this man's fortunes as he learns, drop by drop the wisdom of humility and compassion. Painful, beautiful, hopeful, heartbreaking. It's a good story that is not a waste of your time or spirit.
The author is so gifted at writing, but sadly, not at narration. As bad as the narration is, the story is good enough that I would still recommend you get it. THAT is how good this book is! But please, audible, get a re-do on this with a professional narrator. Please.
