Historia
Tokyo resident Keiko Furukara has never fit in - neither in her family, nor in school - but when at the age of 18 she begins working at the Hiiromachi branch of national convenience store chain Smile Mart, she realizes instantly that she has found her purpose in life. Delighted to be able to exist in a place where the rules of social interaction are crystal clear (many are laid out line-by-line in the store's manual), Keiko does her best to copy the dress, mannerisms, and mode of speech of her colleagues, playing the part of a "normal" person excellently, more or less.

Historia
Franny Stone has always been the kind of woman who is able to love but unable to stay. Leaving behind everything but her research gear, she arrives in Greenland with a singular purpose: to follow the last Arctic terns in the world on what might be their final migration to Antarctica. Franny talks her way onto a fishing boat, and she and the crew set sail, traveling ever further from shore and safety. But as Franny’s history begins to unspool - a passionate love affair, an absent family, a devastating crime - it becomes clear that she is chasing more than just the birds.

The sadly overused time hops
Revisado: 02-05-24
A beautifully written, (and ecologically timely) very enjoyable book and characters, but sadly cut into, by far too many time hops back and forward from the past to the present and other time frames, where the writing continues engagingly but the purpose never becomes entirely clear. Nor do these hops round up or finally get collected to any meaningful statement or clarification of why they exist … the appalling book editor or team, should be grilled and roasted for their abject negligence both in its first reading stage if not later development ! Not able to recommend this sadly spoiled work of fine prose…

Another highly entertaining novel in the Gabriel Allon series
Revisado: 08-15-23
So seemingly effortlessly does the learned MR Silva create his stories that it’s hard not to take them for granted …so I didn’t and enjoyed every moment of the well-constructed plot and characters set in the context of the Russo Ukrainian conflict ! Highly recommended

Historia
Mark Clattenburg found himself in the centre circle, whistle in hand, at the start of 450 Premier League matches during a highly eventful 13-year career in football's top flight. He has shaken hands with, issued red and yellow cards to, and been sworn at by hundreds of players. He has been screamed at and shared jokes with dozens and dozens of managers. And he's felt the wrath of thousands upon thousands of irate fans. His autobiography is the ultimate guide to what it's really like to be in the referee's spotlight.

Fascinating view of the EPL refs world
Revisado: 12-24-22
Quite a revelation to see inside the very personal mindset and character of a top premiere league referee. Sadly much I had hoped to learn about, such as the mechanics of ref training qualification and match operations were not addressed but this was a great read and insightful biography I very much enjoyed !

Historia
Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

Historia
Here are turnings of all kinds - changes of heart, nasty surprises, slow awakenings, sudden detours - where people struggle against the terrible weight of the past and challenge the lives they have made for themselves. Beautifully crafted, and as tender as they are confronting, these elegiac stories examine the darkness and frailty of ordinary people and celebrate the moments when the light shines through.

Audible should have mentioned that...
Revisado: 08-30-20
The words or description “a collection of vaguely interlinked short stories “ without a convergence point, which is what this beautifully written, highly evocative and scenic book is, would have been a great help before buying it, the author takes you on a 10 hour journey to nowhere in particular ... unless I completely missed the point, I’m a little peeved by pointlessness in any quite enjoyable book.

Historia
Tsukiko, 38, works in an office and lives alone. One night, she happens to meet one of her former high school teachers, "Sensei", in a local bar. Tsukiko had only ever called him "Sensei" ("Teacher"). He is 30 years her senior, retired, and presumably a widower. Their relationship develops from a perfunctory acknowledgment of each other as they eat and drink alone at the bar, to a hesitant intimacy, which tilts awkwardly and poignantly into love.

I can’t remember how many bottles of sake she drank but it was a lot more than thirty, the story is while pedantic quite prettily told and mildly amusing but then I’m just a romantic sensitive guy!
