When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose, leaving all kinds of paranormal problems in its wake. It’s GREAT, but so was Renee Raudman
Revisado: 05-03-23
The performance actually deserves a higher rating, probably a 5⭐️—HOWEVER, this a new release with so a kagillion voice actors, so I bought it expecting something WAAAYY amazing.
Then I felt dumb for buying it. Why? Because Renee Raudman already did such a ridiculously fantastical job of first release, it barely changed anything. Of course, Raudman is in a stratosphere of her own, so I don’t even get the point of this.
The special effects didn’t really add that much for me either which was also a bummer. I don’t know why. Sometimes there was music at odd times? Maybe my imagination filled in the groans and oofs of fight scenes?
Both versions are great, and so is the series- it’s a wild world and story but somehow it draws you in and it works.
But I’d just pick one.

Historia
The last thing Cammie Morgan remembers is leaving the Gallagher Academy to protect her friends and family from the Circle of Cavan - an ancient terrorist organization that has been hunting her for over a year. But when Cammie wakes up in an Alpine convent and discovers that months have passed, she must face the fact that her memory is now a black hole. The only traces left of Cammie’s summer vacation are the bruises on her body and dirt under her nails, and all she wants is to go home.

Great series, high expectations- not favorite installment
Revisado: 02-07-19
I hate to criticize a great series with so many creative techniques that make my lips quirk with real amusement and delight each time I run into them. Like a box of chocolates.
But this could be subtitled: “Are you okay, Cammie?” I got irritable after awhile and started almost flinching when “Are you okay, Cammie?” or “You’re okay, Cammie,” “It’s okay, Cammie,” or anything similar was said or thought. Even the author, as voiced through Cammie, said the same thing at the same time I did. I should even go back and find the spot. Cammie thinks/says it’s the 243rd time she had heard it (or some number) and I thought “yeah, I know, right? Me, too.”
So you end up also thinking how tiring it is for Cammie to be the center of the universe or key to the universe for all the characters - and all she can do for a lot of the book is whine about being sorry, run blindly in a dream state or cry. So maybe a grown-up really shouldn’t read a book aimed at tween-ers. But it’s so well done in general! And the basic plot is so complicated a design you kind of want to see the whole thing. Which leads me back to my first assessment. I really don’t want to criticize. I’m a mature adult sneaking into the theatre of a show aimed at much younger minds. And I’m so glad someone is writing for that audience. Kudos to the author: it’s so well done she’s catching adults! But I’m not sure having the main character feel so helpless half the time is the best option either, if there’s ever a new edition.

Clap........clap.......clap
Revisado: 05-11-18
That’s about all I got right now. Just the satisfaction of a full and happy reader, and listener.
I hate to add even a hint of criticism to this book or series so far- I’m flying through it and haven’t had the time for the retrospection that would let me find any niggling mistakes. It feels like Raiders of the Lost Ark 10 minutes after screen went dark. Mistakes? Who knows? Don’t tell me if there are. You get the idea.
The only times my mind snagged a bit from its full submersion in the story was Derek’s accent. I say an authentic southern accent is one of most impossible to imitate, at least once you’ve heard the real thing, or maybe it’s just I prefer the more buttery regions - the hints of hick just kind of grate and I love Derek too much to want him to grate. BUT, maybe it really is the accent they were going for with Derek, maybe that is Atlantean Southern and I’m the stupid- because it did distinguish him well from other characters and was very consistent.

A mercenary in magic-torn Atlanta who cleans up after magic gone wrong, Kate Daniels has seen it all - and some things she couldn't even have imagined. Normally, waves of paranormal energy ebb and flow like an ocean current. But once every seven years, a paranormal flare comes and brings magic like a tidal wave. Now Kate faces problems on a much bigger scale: a divine one.

My life is reading- FAVORITE STORY IN FOREVER!
Revisado: 05-09-18
I want to take a moment to humbly thank the writers of this one. (I read Andrews is a husband-wife team?)
Maybe this is a kind of twist in the genre - while technically leaning more YA I would guess, there’s so much for grown-ups like me who still secretly love stories of fantasy and adventure. And I don’t mean fantasy chick lit. The opposite. But there are some definite jolts of yummy fiery grown-up sexiness there, while staying in bounds. Which for me is the most beautiful, slow burn to super hot kind of sexy there is. Maybe I’m the one reader tuned exactly to the pitch of this particular book- this is first series of Andrews I’ve read. I was delighted by book one but simply adore book two.
Excellent adventure and creative world. I’m sure there’s meaning etched into the rolling tides between tech and magic but I’m having too much fun to examine right now. My favorite kind. Tough heroine but not too tough. Uberty uber tough hero who is allowing some kindness to show- probably only because he’s decided to allow it, he’s so disciplined.
To my surprise, there is a slowly but VERY entertaining and tender romance growing through the series. Fills me with, um, “Toska”. (Have to google or read book to find meaning of that.) There’s ‘meaning of life’, and ‘what is all this about’, ‘value of self’ and ‘why do we bother’ questions galore, but so well hidden in either well-written humor or pretty prose- it flits by, take it or leave it. However, I dare you to not get a lump in your throat at least once.
And the EPILOGUE is simply, truly delicious. PRICELESS. I want to read it for the first time, over and over. Sigh. Perhaps the crafty authors ARE onto me and my silent sisterhood - moms forced to gorge on the reading fodder of our kids, only to find, oh no, we don’t hate some of it. Adventure still sings to a part of my heart that is unrepentantly young- however wizened by real life the whole of it is. The authors’ wink to us, I think, is the real paperback story mentioned in the last sentences - popular before the time of the millennials - and the final word spoken comes from the lexicon of pre- 2000 as well. I can only hope to get more.
As for the narrator- great job! Being able to pull off a feminine voice and a sufficiently masculine male voice and a tremulous child’s voice. Bravo. Gotta say what I say to anyone trying to pull off a southern accent- don’t do it unless you grew up there or are for sure you’ve got it. It’s the trickiest to do right of all the accents.

I never could have imagined that Derek and I would willingly turn back into vampires. But there are some things in life that you just can't predict. Like the strange human disappearances that started happening on the coasts surrounding us. There would have been nothing mysterious about these kidnappings so close to our own turf, had The Shade's vampires not given up drinking human blood almost two decades ago....

Caleb and Rose are my favorite
Revisado: 01-31-18
I have read all of the Shade tales up to about #45 or so. For some reason the story of Rose and Caleb is my favorite. Rose is fun and sweet, but I love the wounded warrior Caleb. Instead of moving forward in the series, I’ve found myself coming back to this one.

A simple and sweet tale
Revisado: 01-30-18
The Dragon Kin stories are thus far sweet-natured and yet very entertaining. I can see them becoming favorites of the YA crowd but even I, far beyond those years, am enjoying the stories a great deal and wondering what will be next, and how the story will unfold after the five chosen pairs have been assembled. Curiosity will keep me coming back, I’m sure, to the very end.
