meh narrator
Revisado: 12-26-24
This narrator seems more suited to soft pop radio and has a predilection for making the women sound scared or nervous even when they're not in a situation that would warrant it. I'm not sure if I'll be able to finish, the story isn't helped by the narrator and the narrator isn't helped by the story.

As Nora tries to untangle the truth of Becca’s disappearance, she discovers a darkness in her town’s past, as well as a string of coded messages Becca left for her to unravel. want a cleaner copy
Revisado: 12-11-24
Just so anyone else reading this knows, the horrid pronunciation of Hecate doesn't contine much past the first 1/4 of the book. I wish there had been time to do another narration run at this story, the pacing felt off in places. And. the, missed, punctuation pauses made parts of the story really hard to listen to like there was a turn of. the. page in the middle of a thought.

Historia
After years of questioning her sanity, Kat Delancey reluctantly returns to the old family manor as its legal owner, hoping desperately to silence the doubts in her mind and leave the home's tragic past behind her once and for all. But it turns out to be harder than she expected, and not just because of the estranged step-family waiting for her - because maybe Kat's mind was never playing tricks on her after all, and maybe the manor harbors a far more malevolent presence than she ever dreamed...

Fun Premise
Revisado: 12-11-24
I feel like the narrator would be happier reading the news or an ASMR series. the main character had things acted upon them but didn't really seem to have much personality nonetheless. It was worth the price (included in membership) but idk if I would spend a credit on it.

Interesting
Revisado: 11-20-24
first up, I am a fan of the author's work, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. OMG! I love the premise of this tale and execution is amazing. I don't claim to know enough science to speak to lab protocols etc. The ending has me twisted, pressed, shooketh and ded!
The narrator's detached and deliberate pacing was wonderful paired with the story of a woman who has been cut off from human company in childhood and in such an almost surgical way that now in adulthood she thinks human relationships are by their very nature only as valuable as their transactional worth.

Historia
Three months ago, Tansy Bloom quit monster hunting. Since then, she’s been trying to live a normal life (whatever that means), but ending up single, unemployed, and living on a boat outside her godfather’s pub definitely wasn’t part of the plan. So, when Tansy’s ex-husband – fellow monster hunter Rex Barclay – turns up like a bad penny and asks for her help with his latest investigation, Tansy reluctantly agrees. At first, the job appears to be a straightforward monster hunt – following a spate of large creature sightings, Rex believes a werewolf is on the loose in Norfolk.

Historia
There’s a literary niche for all tastes including those who think that either Agatha Christie wasn’t funny enough or that PG Wodehouse didn’t feature anywhere near as many baffling murders as he could have. The Case of the Canterfell Codicil is a classic, cozy, locked-room mystery written in the style of an homage to PG Wodehouse.

it's exactly the Mashup of Wodehouse and Christie you've been promised! The twists are twisty, the puns groany and just good ole English country house locked room fun!

Less torture, more conspiracy
Revisado: 01-24-23
Overall. not a bad story but I felt like the explicit printing out of the Geneva convention guidelines and using them as a checklist was a bit much while the conspiracy theory angle was too largely glossed over.

Very Satisfying
Revisado: 08-10-22
I like Sarah Gailey, let me just lead with that. This story had characters that felt fully fleshed out, the motivations of each were explained and didn't seem one or even two dimensional. The conflicts were reasonable and the denouement...excellent! I also enjoy that each of Gailey's books I've read are their own little universe that leaves you craving more but you know will be denied, hence making the craving more sweet.

Unsatisfying
Revisado: 08-01-22
The twist wasn't so much a twist as a gentle curve in the road. Both times. The narrator, rather than taking context clue from vocabulary, chose to do a posh English for the detective and it was rather disconcerting to hear blue collar slang in an RP voice. The build up was so strong and then.... poof. Like a rollercoaster that ratchets you up for an hour only to do a little dip then you have to walk down two flights of stairs to get back out to the park.
