Historia
Now a writer and performer on Late Night with Seth Meyers and host of The Amber Ruffin Show, Amber Ruffin lives in New York, where she is no one's first Black friend and everyone is, as she puts it, "stark raving normal". But Amber's sister Lacey? She's still living in their home state of Nebraska, and trust us, you'll never believe what happened to Lacey.

Infuriating Stories from Two Excellent And Quirky Black Women
Revisado: 02-18-21
I loved this book! It was familiar and infuriating because of all the evil mess that racism brings to the doors of Black people but ESPECIALLY Black women/womxn. It speaks to the resilience of Black women and despite being so capable of bouncing back with a smile, they shouldn’t have to overcome so much of this vitriol. Amber Ruffin and Lacy Lamar were a treat to listen to and I’m glad they take up spaces, shared their personal stories, and empower themselves to have voices. This book was great. Black women deserve better than this world gives. Let’s all do better. Racism is trash. This book is gold.

Historia
This is a dynamic, modern dramatisation of a classic book by John Wyndham. Bill Nighy ( Love Actually and many other films) and Sarah Parish ( Cutting It) play Richard and Janet, a couple caught up in the goings-on of a sleepy English village in which all the children have golden eyes, blond hair, and a sinister talent for telepathy and telekinesis. (Wyndham's novel was filmed as Village of the Damned in 1960 and 1995.)

Historia
In the Technicolor glow of the early 70s, Jessica B. Harris debated, celebrated, and danced her way from the jazz clubs of the Manhattan's West Side to the restaurants of the Village, living out her buoyant youth alongside the great minds of the day - luminaries like Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, and Toni Morrison. My Soul Looks Back is her paean to that fascinating social circle and the depth of their shared commitment to activism, intellectual engagement, and each other.

My soul is pleased
Revisado: 07-25-18
This book was recommended by a dear friend who knows of my admiration for Baldwin and Angelou and Nina and the rest. I’m sure she didn’t know that I’d connect deeper with Jessica who, like me, I imagine upon finishing, feels she existed in the margins in most of it.
Before reaching chapter 4, i’d recommended the book to 15 people. By the end of the book, 50 people. Just amazing! Thank you, Jessica.

Incalculable Spiritual Value
Revisado: 06-13-18
To describe the listening of this book as anything less than monumentally transformative is an understatement. To listen to a figure who is so influential describe their process of becoming a whole person with roots connected to a community, family, self is truly awe inspiring. Darnell walks us through a deeply personal and difficult spiritual excavation only to reveal that there is treasure in this journey of tears, relief, and surprise. It does the book so much justice that the author reads his words with calm and organic measure. This book is why sharing our journeys is important. To hear this story and think at any point he author believed his story was nothing to tell is shocking. These words heal. These words illuminate. These words reveal and these words have healed. These words made me feel seen. This is a treasure to be shared as widely as possible. Thank you Darnell for this look into your world.

Interesting look at people who can't change
Revisado: 04-10-18
The narrator, Carol Jordan Stewart was really quite good. She has an excellent command of nuance for each character. The stories ranged from small town horror to quiet meditations on life. I didn't entirely relate to the quite bubbled characters in the story, but I enjoyed listening to them and their experiences around propriety or what they perceive to be propriety. A worthwhile listen!

Great Insight for any doubtful Artist!
Revisado: 12-08-16
This title certainly puts into perspective the complex circuitry of self-sabotage that seems to be common with any artists or would be creative types. It delves into a great many of the habits and negative self-talk preventing great novels, dance pieces, songs, and essays from being born.
I think this title is an easy listen, with effective narration. It offers some personal reflective insights for creative people (so everyone essentially, even if they don't think so). It's something I plan on revisiting and worth keeping in the library for sure.

Historia
In her heralded first novel, Gloria Naylor weaves together the stories of seven women living in Brewster Place, a bleak-inner city sanctuary, creating a powerful, moving portrait of the strengths, struggles, and hopes of black women in America. Vulnerable and resilient, openhanded and openhearted, these women forge their lives in a place that in turn threatens and protects—a common prison and a shared home. Naylor renders both loving and painful human experiences with simple eloquence and uncommon intuition in this touching and unforgettable listen.

Wonderfully written and performed
Revisado: 08-23-16
Gloria Naylor truly constructed a world full of women society makes invisible (often by choice). Black women who are subject to so many systems of racism and patriarchy, but still find a way to survive and live. Tonya Pinkins is an unsung talent in her ability to create a persona of each character, and truly weave her voice work in with the worlds of Naylor. This was awesomely sad, but I'm so glad I got to listen to these stories. It couldn't have been done better.

Charming Honesty is my Favorite thing
Revisado: 01-13-16
As a writer I was listening to this as a means of offering some motivation to get up and write. What I got instead was a funny, witty, brutally honest and self aware recollection of a writer and creative person who I admire quite a bit. I found myself not only motivated to write more, but to be myself more often, and to be open to my own truth. I really enjoyed this and will likely revisit this when I'm feeling less motivated and crying on the floor lamenting my lack of talent, I'll use this book as an anchor. Really great listen!
