Initially the book was difficult for me because I struggled to accept the soft topics and wanted more concrete material. However I realize that we have to get ourselves internally aligned and understand our motivations and priorities before we can accept the concrete things that we are looking for. This book does a great job of helping you to clarify focus and provide tools to help you make the necessary changes.

Getting to the point of marriage

I enjoyed Thomas’ work on what makes a Sacred Marriage. This book digs deeply into historical and contemporary views of marriage. Thomas describes the church’s frequent assertion that singleness provides a greater opportunity for serving God. Thomas refutes this assertion and explores the opportunity that marriage provides to shape us into the image of Christ.

Thomas provides examples from his own marriage as well as the marriages of others. However, this book is not a practical guide in how to specifically communicate with your spouse or manage your marriage. It is a guide on the mentality and perspective one should develop to allow one’s marriage to serve God more effectively. I recommend this book to anyone regardless of how long they have been married and especially to those who are considering marriage.
