Historia
It is the spring of 1939 and three generations of the Kurc family are doing their best to live normal lives, even as the shadow of war grows closer. The talk around the family Seder table is of new babies and budding romance, not of the increasing hardships threatening Jews in their hometown of Radom, Poland. But soon the horrors overtaking Europe will become inescapable, and the Kurcs will be flung to the far corners of the world, each desperately trying to navigate his or her own path to safety.

Powerful and utterly engaging…
Revisado: 02-25-25
This is the most powerful book I have ever read, particularly related to the Second World War and what we as a world population allowed to happen. - Personally, I was not born for a couple of decades after the war, although I do accept an element of responsibility having been born in the last century at all. - What happened was unforgivable, and should be unforgettable.
And yet we forget. And here we are on the cusp of more unforgivable behaviour.
I am not Jewish, and I am not black. I am the epitome of Arian to look at and I am of christian decent, and so have no family history to help me understand what occurred. This book helped me to understand. This book has taught me about humans’ inhumanity to humans. About humans’ inhumane actions to our world.
And yet it has shown me real resilience, real love, real survival in the face of hell on earth. Wow! This is an exceptional piece if work written in a conversational manner, which makes it so much easier to read. And there is no blame rendered in this story. Just occurrences and a fight against odds for survival.
This book is amazing.

Historia
The news of her husband's infidelity comes as a nasty shock to Jenny Reynolds, part-time building control officer and full-time mother—even though, to her surprise and embarrassment, her first reaction is relief, not anguish. What really hurts is her children's unhappiness at the break-up, and the growing realisation that, alone, she may lose the family farm.

Two of the books are good… one is a direct copy of a work by another author…
Revisado: 12-05-24
These are great stories, except for the second book… Blacklight… which is almost an exact copy of the book biography about a real series killer called Israel Keyes. The character of the Asian murderer is identical. Even down the the torture of a cat. Which I found incredibly disappointing and somewhat appalling. Maybe the J M Dalgliesh should be paying royalties to the author of the Alaskan Serial Killer’s book, as she did all the research, and J M Dalgliesh just copied it. Pretty poor.
In relation to the other work however, I think them good works, and worth listening too. Well written, and interesting.

Very disturbing…
Revisado: 11-06-24
Yes… so many many people dropped the ball, if they even knew there was a ball, on this man and what he was doing!
Even the stupidity to believe with all his travels and his 100’s and 100’s of plans, that he would limit himself to less than one kill a year, is utterly ludicrous! This man killed, at a guess, more than half a dozen a year. And he said it started 14 years before… and I think, like some of those FBI agents, he started when he was a 18 with those two 12 year old girls… or even earlier.
He is and was frightening.
It is a very unsettling true story.
And what is more frightening is that he was so incredibly good at what he did, that we may never never know who he killed and how many he really did kill in the end. If there is ever an end.
A very disturbing read / listen.

My Life So Far is a powerful account of an extraordinary woman. Oscar winner, controversial political activist, groundbreaking fitness guru, wife, mother, lover, philanthropist; just some of the roles Jane Fonda is known for. In this candid book, written by Fonda herself, there are messages for women of all ages as she holds a mirror up to her own life but lets us see ours reflected there.

Revisado: 11-01-24
From an earlier generation, but an icon for me on the periphery, I wanted to learn about and understand Jane Fonda, and what makes her who she is. I have had a glimpse, because even a comprehensive book can only give you a glimpse of someone and someone‘s life, and I am so pleased I did. This is a fabulous book… a real journey. Some of her lessons in life are my lessons too, and it is good to feel that kindredness. Very much worth reading… very much worth listening too.

Historia
When Cassie Graves discovers her husband’s affair, it’s enough to chip away at the foundation of her life. But after researching her family’s Italian ancestry, it completely crumbles beneath her. Her grandmother Gia’s often-told stories about the past are a lie. Her much-romanticized great-grandfather Giovanni may not even have existed. Most alarming of all, it appears her mysterious great-grandmother Violetta died by stregoneria—witchcraft.

Through the threads of generations come wonderful worlds…
Revisado: 10-06-24
It took me a couple of goes to get through this book. It is gripping and sad, and beautiful and extraordinary. It utterly touched me, and at times I wept.
I pre-ordered it because I love Wendy Webb’s work. I love the stories she weaves of the Great Lakes, and the mystery that surrounds them, particularly Lake Superior. So, initially I wasn’t sure if I wanted to travel to Italy. But it turns out I did. And wow! What a journey.
Utterly brilliant work. Wonderfully researched and woven with threads of life. Thanks Wendy. It was amazing to read, and I am thrilled I did. X

Hilarious…
Revisado: 09-12-24
I have been going through Caroline Graham’s Midsummer Murders’ books, and thought this might be one, although it wasn’t mentioned as such. I had however seen a Midsummer Murder set at a Victorian property with a weekend murder mystery game in costume, and thought, maybe… ? Anyway, it isn’t, yet I think the makers of Midsummer did use the book as a backdrop. Still, the book isn’t a Midsummer Murder book, but is fabulous. It is her best book I think. Truly hilarious! It reminded me of a couple of old favourites, The Girl on the Boat, Wodehouse, and the drunken seen in David Copperfield, Dickens. I really enjoyed it.

Revisado: 05-13-24
This a such a truly fabulous book.
I have found it’s story to be beautiful, sad, soul-destroying, enlightening, tender, joyful and funny. There are very few books that can capture life within them, that can teach us things we never knew about places we have never even considered going or even wondered about, and yet take us by the hand and touch us in our own lives… and to me, this is one of those books… a once in a decade / once in a lifetime books.
I love it, and can not recommend it more highly.
Amazing read. Extraordinary story. Life changing experience.

I love this book…
Revisado: 04-12-24
I have listened to it at least 3 times, each time getting something else from it that I need now, and didn’t notice before. And I have the actual written book, which I bought not long after Henriette first wrote it, and have read that a couple of times, always getting new information.
It is a fabulous book, that can provide you with inspiration every time you read it, and indeed, something new when you are in need of a different answer. It is my go-to book. And it is worth every cent I have paid for it, and much much more.
