The school bullying required some suspension of belief. Of course I realize how ridiculous that sounds given the whole genre. So maybe better said as it was a weak plot driver. But I like that this is a twist from the usual where at least so far many of the protagonists are human - and there is already a Scooby gang. I’m happy it doesn’t completely revolve around 1 girl and happy to not have to stay completely in her head the whole book. My favorite theme is found family and this is a good beginning.

I don’t feel terribly invested in any of these characters anymore. It’s now book 8 in the series and still mainly a one woman show - and unfortunately that one woman is not enough to capture my attention. I’m not terribly excited to move on to the next book. The beauty of the superior series is while they might stay focused on one woman, they start to grow the other characters - there is a complete lack of Scooby gang to bring depth and heart to main character - and the others. We see glimpses of them - Jeff, Grandpa - but everyone needs to grow. This series actually started out more promising than others by giving the female lead a female best friend that wasn’t just there to talk about the guys. But eventually the friend was stripped away and sidelined.

This is the first book in the series that made me cry, cheer, and laugh out loud. Other books in the series have made me laugh out loud.. My favorite theme is found family. The only thing that makes the book not quite five stars is the Scooby gang is not used quite as much as I would like. But I’m so happy they were finally all there. I will definitely continue to read on. And after enough of a break, I’m sure I will reread the entire series and catch things. I miss the first time around And have since forgotten. It does still sometimes get annoying that Kate would question Curran. But at least it’s written with a little more of believability than other situations like Andrea and Rafael, which was incredibly annoying. And it doesn’t go on for too long as to detract from the rest of the book.

I’m not sure if I just wasn’t paying close enough attention or I miss something but I could not get into the story. I typically like Andrea as a side character and as a friend to Kate. And I like that Kate has female friends because that is usually a problem of books of this genre. So I was eager to support this book and I love the edge books so much and it’s handling of all the various family members that I didn’t doubt that the handling of Andrea story would be equally appealing. But unfortunately, I just really didn’t understand Andrea‘s ambivalence about Rafael. I was fine with Rafael for a while until he just started to seem like a stupid moron for hanging on for Andrea‘s wishy-washiness. I just really wouldn’t call Andrea Strong female protagonist. While she might be powerful and strong physically. And she might be a good friend to Kate. Mentally she just seemed like a mess. Unfortunately it probably wasn’t an essential part of the story and that element could’ve been left out. I will continue to read on because I’ve enjoyed the rest of the series thus far. Hopefully the other stories will continue with the same quality as the beginning of the series and the edge series.

What I like about this series compared to others often suggested in the same genre is the humor. That is very much appreciated and needed at this point. I like that it’s also less a solo effort and includes friends and loved ones. I still prefer The Edge series but happy to have this as there are too few of The Edge series. Looking forward to continued reading.

The only thing that would make this series better is a story where all these wonderful characters go out on an adventure together - or I would even just enjoy reading a slice of their lives together. As different and same as every member of the family is, it’s rare I like every single one of them as I do. I’m sad the last Edge novel was written in 2012. I wish there was more to this series. We need more of this feel-good lovable character humor.

I could have done without the romantic relationship angst which I haven’t been a fan of most of the way. But I liked when everyone started working together and making decisions as a group. I’m always in favor of that. Hopefully the Ethan drama fades, as it doesn’t add anything, and group dynamics start to play more heavily. I’m actually more a fan of Jeff overall - not necessarily with Merritt just appreciate that he’s not all emo and can crack a joke.

I like these ensemble books so much more than the sole protagonist ones (including the Kate Daniels series). I love Found Family and it’s a bonus when the Found Family is made of real family. The boys are an extra delight. Would love for all the main characters of this series to adventure together regularly.

I stopped listening the first time I tried this book. I retried after listening to Dragon Claw and learning about speed listening. I started to appreciate the narrator better at 1.7 speed. There is humor and I do like Doria better having made it more of the way then the book. Will continue on in the series and see how far I get. I paused Cassie around Book 9 because of the stalled plot and meanderingly long as someone else called it Michael Bay-like action scenes. At least Dorina’s internal monologue is more humorous.

A lot of people complain about the stories going nowhere and while I’ve agreed I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. A lot of people including me complain about the long action sequences - which I would go so far as to say are not meaningful. I often tune them out - thankfully I just discovered 2X speed. The stories go nowhere because while the first book spent time world building as is common with Fantasy novels - it goes nowhere in that there is no Scooby gang or clear underlying goal. To me the lack of relationship building is the most troublesome because I find myself just waiting for the few moments characters we know and like interact. In between is all the meaningless and uninteresting action. Each book new characters are introduced and we’re supposed to care about them as they careen about. We already know Cassie will survive so watching her careen about it useless - and I can’t bring myself to care about every new character that comes into the story with little time spent building the characters we could know and love. What happened to Raf and Marco. Usually with most Fantasy I’m stuck complaining about lack of female friendships and the protagonist being only surrounded by men. Here I’d just be thankful for relationship building with any of the men. It’s really a shame because the author clearly can write hilarious and heartfelt moments - but 12 hours of listening with 10 seconds total of hilarious or heartfelt only gives me an opportunity to multitask. There are so many interesting characters - build them and build a family. Every time that almost starts it’s abruptly ripped away and replaced with hours and hours of meaningless action that I can’t even remember had meaning midway through. The null witch, Caleb, Casanova, Raf, Marco, the other witch, Jessie - any of them should start to become characters in addition to Cassie, Pritkin. Build the world on a Foundation rather than forcing us to build new worlds with new characters we have no investment in for each book. The one positive I will say is I kind of get the narrator better now. If I think of her as a third party narrator her voice makes more sense. She is actually quite good at everyone but Dorina. She can clearly do a 20 year old, as she does with Cassie. With Dorina, if I pick those books up, I’ll just think of her at narrator.
