Good enough to pass the time
Revisado: 01-03-23
For starters. I don’t like that the book is so short other than that the story started off really well and caught my interest and kept my interest. Nothing too extraordinary with the magic system and the world building requires further development.

Not bad…
Revisado: 01-03-23
It’s not horrible. There is nothing about the book that is entirely original but it is written ok. My biggest issue is with the main character. He demonstrates almost zero common sense and has been consistent the entire series…I typically would expect the protagonist to get wiser but he never seems to learn from his mistakes which is very annoying.

Great but not as good as preceding books
Revisado: 12-05-22
I enjoyed the book but I just had a couple minor issues with this one. I have mixed feelings the change in dynamics between the two protagonists…it’s interesting but I had been patiently waiting for them to get to the point that they are at when they remembered each other just to have this new issue with their memories thrown in; but I suppose it’s a minor point.
The book is good it’s just very predictable and there isn’t a whole lot of unknowns…it’s a great story, interesting nuances to the story and magic systems, decent world building and good writing just…predictable.

Very enjoyable
Revisado: 11-23-22
I always go through a mix of emotions when I end one series and step into a new one. That is usually made more difficult by the fact that a new story often takes time to get into before I begin to enjoy it. That wasn’t a problem with this book. I was engaged from the very start and didn’t want to put the book down.
The story line has a lot of common themes in it with pretentious elves who think they are superior to everyone else, grumpy dwarfs, and humans who are the morally superior underdogs. So…while alot of the basic story wasn’t original, it did not detract from the storyline which was engaging and eventful.
Loved the characters and the world building; while not great in the first book, it seems to be picking up and expanding.
Very enjoyable and a very worthwhile read!

Refreshing and Memorable
Revisado: 08-18-22
I really enjoyed this book. While much of the story line is fairly standard, there were a lot of unique aspects to this book that made it memorable. I would say the storyline was fairly simple and gave off some very serious Eragon-esk vibes but I would not say it was a direct copy and paste: you have a youth that comes from a lowly station, develops supernatural skills, has a grumpy mentor with a chip on his shoulder (two grumpy mentors actually), overcomes great odds and begins developing into a super dragon rider and magic user then you have your villain with daddy and mommy issues, etc…
While all of that may be fairly standard, I like that Holt and his dragon aren’t invincible, in fact they have some pretty serious flaws they have to overcome.
The writing was good, the story was good, the characters and their development was amazing and the world building was pretty good. All around, really good book and one I would definitely recommend reading.

Very Frustrated
Revisado: 02-15-22
The book started off well and had a lot of potential. It was far from the most engaging, action packed book I’ve ever read but it was still enjoyable. That is until the bomb shell that dropped about 2/3rds of the way through the book…
Before I make this statement I want to be clear and let it be know that I am by no means homophobic nor do I judge anyone based on their sexual orientation…my comments are purely based on my expectations as a consumer…I just look for certain things in the books I read and while I don’t mind gay people being in the book…making the main character gay 2/3rds of the way through the book with no prior warning is unconscionable. It’s just like BAM…Anyway, a couple of additional thoughts on the subject:
(1) This really came out of left field. There was no indication that the PROTAGONIST was gay…up until he decided to go to a dance with some dude….
(2) I’m sorry, and maybe it’s just me, but I expect my antagonist to be tough and durable and it’s hard for me to picture that from a guy going to a ball with another dude…I mean is he going to be the one wearing the dress or will it be the other guy?
(3) The rest of the story line doesn’t fit with this narrative. This gay scene is just thrown in there and everyone acts like it’s no big deal…I mean, did his father have an issue with it? His father was a jerk about everything else but apparently dating a dude is ok? Really?
(4) Maybe if it was just a supporting character that was gay it wouldn’t be a big deal but the main character?!? Really? Common sense would tell you that you are only going to appeal to a small audience with this (statistically speaking)…
I just can’t do it anymore, I’m not even going to finish the book let alone the series. I do hope he finds happiness though.

I absolutely love this book series. Book I caught my attention early on and I have been hooked ever sense. The character development is wonderful and I love the way they have all developed individually as well as collectively in their interactions with one another.

Fitz is insufferable
Revisado: 11-10-21
I’m still so embittered with this character. He is always caught or just gives up. He tried to kill himself when he was up against some bad odds…I mean what kind of protagonist hero does that?!? I mean seriously. How about fighting your way out of it or doing something cool instead of being a complete and absolute sissy.

Same issues as 1st book
Revisado: 11-02-21
The story line isn’t bad, many of the characters are likable and I enjoy some of the dynamics between them…but the antagonist continues to be a pain point for me. He is way too vulnerable and has yet to fully come into his power. He has moments where he is a master with an axe that no one can stand before and other times where 1 person can easily overwhelm him. Much of the time he is weak or sick and it is extremely frustrating. He better man up pretty soon. I’m already committed so I’ll read the 3rd book but he is starting to tick me off.
