Historia
When a renowned professor is viciously murdered at a Manhattan conference, Meg stumbles upon the scene and quickly becomes the prime suspect. It falls to her brother, Shamus, to help prove Meg's innocence. The estranged sister and brother we met in Reardon's debut novel, Shadow Campus, now find they know less about each other than they thought.

Absorbing from the first page.
Revisado: 05-30-21
This is the second in a series by talented author Kathleen Reardon. Each book is an independent read and both are absorbing from the first page. (Shadow Campus is the first.) Set during an academic conference the lead quickly comes upon a murder. Reardon skillfully weaves a believable but incredible story as the characters’ intertwined relationships with the murdered subject unfolds. Academia is a rough and tumble world and this book reveals how true the saying “publish or perish” is. The gender power imbalance is also explored. Plenty of twists and turns and a cliff hanger at the end. I would have been happy for the book to continue and hope the author writes a third about Meg Doherty and her brother, Shamus. A solid mystery worth listening to or reading in hard copy. Highly recommend.

Historia
In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

Reads like a thriller
Revisado: 09-20-20
This book reads like a fictional thriller but is even more compelling as it’s nonfiction. Even though I knew how it ended since I’m reading/listening in Sept 2020 (and also watched the documentary) it was still a page turner. Carryyrou did an amazing job of investigative reporting. His sources were courageous and performed a public service. Special notice to Tyler Schultz who risked a strong family relationship. My regard for highly regarded government and public figures must be re-examined, including David Boies and James Mattis— a disappointment for their flawed judgement and falling under the spell of Holmes. Just because you want something to be true doesn’t mean it is. The narration by Will Danton was ideal for the story. Highly recommend
