Creative teacher tells a lively story
Revisado: 05-19-23
Lander draws together an engaging mix of history and her current classroom to illustrate the sometimes-rocky, always-amazing stories of how kids born somewhere else become Americans. She mixes in enough policy to point toward making the process work better, but she never strays far from the true heart of the book--the kids' experiences. The stories in this book gripped at my heart and stay with me every day.
This is a book worth reading.

Historia
In the summer of 1974 a heatwave blankets Boston and Mary Pat Fennessey is trying to stay one step ahead of the bill collectors. Mary Pat has lived her entire life in the projects of “Southie,” the Irish American enclave that stubbornly adheres to tradition and stands proudly apart. One night Mary Pat’s teenage daughter Jules stays out late and doesn’t come home. That same evening, a young Black man is found dead, struck by a subway train under mysterious circumstances. Mary Pat, propelled by a desperate search for her daughter, begins turning over stones best left untouched.

Amazing book, amazing narrator
Revisado: 05-16-23
Powerful book that tells a layered story about an ugly time in Boston (and American) history. Boston accents are really hard, but this narrator nails it. Five stars across the board!

Historia
Ever since 9/11 America has fought an endless war on terror, seeking enemies everywhere and never promising peace. In Pay Any Price, James Risen reveals an extraordinary litany of the hidden costs of that war: from squandered and stolen dollars, to outrageous abuses of power, to wars on normalcy, decency, and truth. In the name of fighting terrorism, our government has done things every bit as shameful as its historic wartime abuses - and until this audiobook, it has worked very hard to cover them up.

Drags a bit in the middle but beginning and end are riveting. A must-read for people who think about our country's future.

Best Lawyer in Philly
Revisado: 06-25-05
Bennie Rosato is the best character I have read. She is sharp, competent, and caring. The book flows and makes sense, and Scottoline makes Bennie come alive.
The feelings in this book run true, especially between Bennie and her old men. I was sorry when this book ended. I wanted more.

Historia
Mary DiNunzio gets a terrifying telephone call while she's working late, then goes home to find a shadow lurking at her front door. When a lawyer close to her turns up dead, Mary begins to suspect that the case she's been working on, involving the suicide of an Italian-American in an internment camp during World War II, may not be ancient history after all.

Love These Characters
Revisado: 06-25-05
The women in Lisa Scottoline's books are interesting, women who are trying to find their way and doing a darn good job of it. Love the Philly settings. A treasure to read.
